In terms of VIDEO, are there many differences between the E-M1 MK II and the MK III ??? (when the E-M1 MK II is running firmware 3.0 or later).

Most reviews say the video features are the same.

Were new video features added to the MK III in later firmware that make it clearly better than the MK II?

I am less concerned about improvements / differences in terms of stills, but if someone can summarize them quickly, that would be great. Or if the user interface is significantly better, please let me kow that, too. (I personally found the menus on the E-M1 MK II a bit clunky, but I am more used to Panasonic menus).

Why I am asking:

My teenage son lost our Oly E-M1 MK II which he was MAINLY using for video (and some light stills work).

So I am looking to replace it with either:

A) Another E-M1 MK II, or

B) A small gimbal so he can just use his iPhone 14 Pro, or

C) Another camera, such as E-M1 MK III, or one of the flavors of GH5 (most likely either the original GH5 or the GH5 II)

Thanks in advance.

They seem similar to me, based on very limited video use from the two models.

I'd give the mkiii a slight nod for its upgraded IBIS, presuming one is using the camera's stabilization. Focus response might be slightly faster but the difference is subtle. Otherwise the cameras are near twins, with the significant mkiii upgrades all revolving around stills use.

Mkiii does have custom focus patterns, if that's of interest.

Cheers,

Rick

The main difference in video I noticed between the MKII and MKIII was IBIS and digital stabilization was improved. Also for people, the face/eye tracking was quicker and more accurate. You can pick up a used MKIII in great condition for $700 or so.

Another idea is to use an iPhone or adventure camera mounted to the hotshoe of your current camera for a wider view and use the camera for tele view. I do this sometimes for photojournalism work. I get two FoV's at the same time and can cut between them later.

Thank you, Rick. I will have to look in to the custom focus patterns.

Thanks for the reply. Cool suggestion about mounting the iPhone in the hotshoe.

The E-M1 III gained 60fps slow motion video and starry sky focus. The cluster C-AF with all points for wildlife is improved. Face detection and eyes detection works better, with very functional multiple selectable face detection selections which can be assigned to Fn button.

There is more good stuffs I can't remember for now.

I don't do video, but the quick list of differences.

Mk3 has
  • Better face AF (stills and video)
  • Starry Sky AF
  • LiveND
  • Even better IBIS
  • HandHeld HR mode
  • Joystick
  • More powerful cpu, so a fraction more responsive (stills and video)
  • IIRC 4 vs 3 Custom modes on the dial.
If I missed something please chip in.
