Question about using LUT without color grading in Sony A7CII

I am using Sony A7C II. I would like to shoot 4K H265 10 bit for the best video quality (family and travel video mainly).

I tried different LUTs without color grading in post edit, such as The Phantom LUT, Joshua Pines's LUT. But the outcome is not satisfied. It is either too low-contrast or color is too "film". And there is no waveform in A7C II. I have no idea how to expose it correctly with the LUT.

is it my fault that I don't know how to use LUT?

Is color grading needed for Phamton/ Joshua Pine LUT.

If yes, I will give up using LUT. So is the PP1-PP11 good enough to use?

Please help.

In general, I find that PP IS NEEDED with phantom, I've used that before and it's not nearly as good as going slog3 -> apply lut...

In general, I find that PP IS NEEDED with phantom, I've used that before and it's not nearly as good as going slog3 -> apply lut. You have to overexpose slog3 +1 2/3 if you want a quick turnaround workflow. In the end, I had to use a color chart and make my own LUT, and TBH, I don't recall the exact steps, but I focus on reds, greens, and blues of the sky. The color is good enough to use as is, if you like deeper colors, you can easily tweak the curves and apply to all clips (do this on occasion), but the LUT is designed to get the color science where I want it.

when you import the LUT set the AE offset to 5/3 EV ( 1 2/3). That's it, exposure comp is at zero and you expose for zero, and this is a rough ballpark, but the closest thing to SOOC high quality LUT ready to go.

Thanks a lot for your explanation.

I have no idea how to create my own LUT. So maybe I will wait for someone to tell me which LUT is best high quality LUT for SOOC. But at least, I will not use Phantom LUT as you said it needs PP.

you probably won't ever get an answer just waiting. Do some test shots with Phantom or other out, with the AE offset. Bring footage into davinci, do your color grade to get footage up to your preferences, the export that LUT. Use it on your camera and see how close it is to what you want. Doesn't take a whole lot to create a LUT, use davinci resolve.
