Good afternoon.

I was recently given a Sigma 105mm 1.4.

I just took a bunch of portraits on my Nikon D850 at 1.4. . Most of the frames missed my focus on the talents eye and instead focused on there ear or around the ear. A few did focus on the closest eye which is what my focus points where aimed at, but many did not.

Any thoughts on focus? I have back focus going on as well as continues focus

I am shooting a boxer hitting the bag. Fast shutter and wide open. Just been a bit disappointed with my results

Thanks

This is the Sigma Camera forum.

You might get better help over on Nikon FX or Third Party Lens ...

As with most DSLRs you might need to calibrate the focus for that lens with your camera.

Why Ted... why?

The poster is asking about a Sigma lens. Plenty of Sigma Camera Forum members use Sigma lenses and have some knowledge of how they work. It's perfectly reasonable to ask about Sigma lenses here.

Labantam,

What I meant in my earlier reply was that you should use the AF Fine Tune in your D850 to calibrate the lens focus with your camera. You'll find it in the spanner area of the menus. Most lenses need fine tuning with DSLR cameras.

Yes, I suppose this is the place to ask about AF performance of the D850 DSLR's 153-point AF system linked to 180,000-pixel metering system.

I withdraw the comment.

S, just curious, can we adjust lenses in some manner through a menu item on any of our Sigma cameras, or is that a Nikon thing? I've neve heard the term 'spanner'....?

Spanner is English for "wrench" (S is from over there).

Sandy,

You can adjust the lenses on the SD1 Merrill. It's called AF Micro Adjustment in the menus. It is not necesssary on the sd Quattros or on any of the DP or dp Q cameras since they all focus Live View directly off the sensor.

That lens is an Art lens, so it can be updated with the USB Dock. You can customize the software/firmware of that lens using Sigma Optimization Pro (free). They make versions that are compatible with Windows computers and Macs.
