what to bring to italy? do i dare leave the DSLR at home?

So, I got back from Italy last Friday.

I am so glad I brough the LX5. I ended up using it *so much more* than my DSLR which has far and away much better "image quality", but the results I got with the LX5 were so much more interesting.

Below are some sample shots

... and next time you can just leave all those cameras at home and just use a high-quality cell phone camera and get these same photos

And the exposure will likely be better. Just saying..

Hi Mike,

I'm starting to consider getting an iPhone 15 or 16 pro (16 comes out in September) and use it for most of my photography other than closeups of birds and flowers with blurred backgrounds, which I'll continue to shoot with my Panasonic FZ300, unless the iPhone can accomplish that as well.

I now have an iPhone SE, which I only use when I spot something I want to photograph and don't have a camera with me. Its acceptable is many situations as long as I don't need more than its one focal length.

Do you find a current generation high quality smart phone camera capable of a fair amount of cropping and still maintaining decent IQ?

Any other info on the subject of switching would be helpful as well.

Best,

Den

Hi Den

The iPhone 14Pro and 15Pro both are capable to shoot 48 megapixel images with the main camera sensor which is the equiv of 24mm. The wider lens on both phone models is equiv to 13mm and is only 12 megapixel as is the 70 mm mild tele. However rumour has it that the iphone 16Pro due to be released in September, also has 48 a megapixel 13mm. The Tele lens on the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro is rumored to be maybe 120 mm but will likely still be 12 megapixel. All this info from the Macrumors website.

48 megapixels give you lots of cropability and the files are very decent quality. Not Nikon D850 quality but startlingly good for mobile phone output. You can save files as 10bit DNG raw files or jpgs

Since you are already an iPhone user, the transition will be pretty seamless. Maybe others can describe the upper end Android camera capabilities.

cheers

Reggie gave you some good info and he's an iphone user so he's a good source since I use android.

In my experience with android (from what I read the latest android and iphone cameras are relatively comparable) some cropping can be done, but nothing like what you can do with a full frame camera. I will try to post a real example for you when I get a chance so you can judge for yourself.

Hi Reggie,

Thanks for your input, greatly appreciated. I read similar info on the iPhone 16 plus, and since launch is only a couple of months away, seems best to just wait for it and then try it out and see for myself how satisfied I am with what it can produce. My days of long distance travel are likely behind me for the most part, and I no longer have any desire to change lenses or carry a lot of gear, so the Sony RX100vii, I think, is the best camera to meet my needs and IQ quality desired, but if a phone camera can come close to or equal its abilities, seems like a logical alternative.

Stay well and my best,

Den

Mike,

Thanks for your input and for the images showing cropping ability and IQ. I think I need to just test out the new iPhone (as I am committed to the Apple infrastructure), and see firsthand if I am satisfied with the results.

Hi Den

i am also going to upgrade from the 14Pro to the 16 Pro once it becomes available. My back is complaining about my 10 kg camera backpack on the last couple trips so have been using my iPhone 14 Pro much more. The high res raw images from the main lens sensor are totally acceptable for me. The wide angle and tele are not good enough for my purposes but if I can also get the same hi res output from the 13mm with the 16Pro that will be a great upgrade. So the tele end is the real remaining weak spot for mobile phone cameras.

If you check out my previous post about Ravenna and Parma you can see some examples of street shots that I did st twilight with the iPhone 14Pro main camera shot at 48 megapixel resolution.

Reggie,

Thanks for your views and your take on the iPhone 14 pro abilities and hoped for improvements for the 16 pro. I find the Ravenna street images quite acceptable, and know that no smartphone is going to deliver quality images at longer focal lengths, so, as you have stated, I will be satisfied if IQ is good up to perhaps the equivalent of 75mm (after cropping).

So I guess we both wait until September and give the new 16 pro a chance to prove its abilities..

Thanks again,

Den

Hi Den

I have just finished uploading a new slideshow for North of Italy to my website if you are interested. Here's the link to my travel page. The image link to the new show is at bottom left. https://www.msphoto.ca/travel.htm

Cheers

I took a small camera (Sony 6000)for a shoulder pack when we went and the photos were OK, but i did not think they were as good as they would have been with my Nikon. Towards the end of the trip I dropped camera and broke the pancake lens and had to use the zoom. I kind of regretted not having my other camera

Reggie,

Thanks for the link. Brought back so many wonderful memories. Beautifully constructed slide show. Were most of the outdoor images shot with your iPhone?

Best,

Very nice photos of N Italy Reggie.

At 82 I have to admit the iphones make very, very good photos. My issue is I have a mental issue (a personal one) using an iphone as a "camera" rather than a camera as a standard to use after all of these years using a camera. Funny thing is I've never had an issue switching bodies or styles of camera bodies.

Maybe I'll change as time goes by.

Reggie, thanks and I love the disguise idea. It's not that as much as me being reluctant to change from a camera to an iphone for my main photo taker. I think I have an iphone 10 or 11 and one minor issue I have is holding the phone straight and my fingers not getting in the way of photos I want to take. Unless the iphone is near my head and the subject is infront, it's just more difficult for me to make photos with an iphone.

My go-to cameras are Canon R5 or R7 full bodies and a Sony RX100VI for a compact. All are larger than iphone.

In comparing these above models, I tkink camera will win out.

I'm sleepy so some may not make sense.

Thanks for you patience and understanding.

Kent

Thank you Kent, that was an unforgettable evening, the full moon was coming up behind the Colosseum but I could'nt get a good enough shot of both.
