Monster LA-EA4r

Just converted my LA-EA4 to 4r. Pretty straightforward following the video. Current supported list is on their website

Initial test:
A6300 + 500AF: works fine
A6300 + 28-105: AF doesnt work (moves lens to shortest focus distance)... shame as this was what I really wanted to work!

Hoping for v9 ;)
Have you emailed them to tell them the lens doesn't function correctly ?

If they stated it would , and it's not , they can look into it .

Pinged them a request on their comments form… but the 28-105 is NOT on their current supported lenses list…. However it DOES work with the A7Riv + LA-EA5, but of course not with the A6300…

I've reached out to them because they have the
  • Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical [IF] Macro
listed as supported - however mine does not AF properly throughout the zoom range.

No response as of yet.

I mis-read the list , it's the 24-105mm on it .

I've been thinking of getting one to convert mine ( I already have an LA-EA5) to use it on my a7Riv , the more they add the better .

It'll save carrying both .

Just updated to V08 today. Found that the Minolta 35-105mm is now working with my A6600. Also found that my Tokina 300mm f2.8 is also working with my A6600. I didn't try with my A7iii. Since the A6600 supports the LA-EA5, and the A7iii does not. I sometimes see a difference in which lenses are supported on the Monster Adapter and I won't know until I try.

A6300 + Tamron 28-300 IF Macro via LA-EA4r works but focuses slowly…

Good news for your Tokina 300 2.8

Hoping my Tokina 300 f4 will work one day

Been gone a while but rekindling the fire so Hello

I have a Laea4 that had a damaged screen so I took it out

would you suppose I could do the Monster upgrade on this ?

That would leave me an intact La4 and a gutted La3 to work with

thanks

Capt Bob

Yes, the monster adapter would work on this LA-EA4 since it no longer uses the translucent mirror. And it supplies a new PCB in which you use to replace the existing PCB. Be very careful how you remove it and how you reattach the connections to it.

It is no longer called a LA-EA4, and the Monster Adapter company likes to call it a LA-EA4r. And what are you talking about a gutted LA-EA3? This is an entirely different adapter, and does not have the screw drive.

The LA-EA4 (after conversion called LA-EA4r) is only for screw drive lenses.

The LA-EA3 (an entirely different adapter) is only for lenses without screw drives and with built-in focus motors.

There is also a LA-EA5 which combines the LA-EA4 and LA-EA3 into a single adapter. BUT, it is only supported on a few Sony cameras such as the A6600 and A7Riv and some of the newer cameras.

On a camera that supports the LA-EA5, there is not much need for the LA-EA4r except for the additional focus points when using the 500mm f8 Reflex lens.

I have all 4: LA-EA3, LA-EA4, LA-EA4r and the LA-EA5. I only use the LA-EA5 with my A6600 and don't bother with the LA-EA4r unless I want to use the 500mm f8 Reflex lens. With this adapter, all my A-mount lenses work.

With my A7iii, I cannot use the LA-EA5 with screw mount lenses and can only use the LA-EA4 or the LA-EA4r. And most, but not all, of my screw mount lenses work with LA-EA4r. But with the LA-EA4 does support all my A-mount lenses. But with this adapter, I may need to do a MFA if the focus is a bit off.

The end result is that the A6600 along with the LA-EA5 is used almost entirely since all my A-mount lenses are supported and focus is done at the sensor with no MFA needed.
thanks

Thanks Jim , The gutted La 3 was just my thinking about what all I have and I do use it for mostly shorter focal non screw drive stuff being it's lighter and smaller , I did observe my Minolta 400 4.5 will not work with the intact La 4 with the matching 1.4 teleconverter on the 7 iii but does on my 7 ii , I have a couple old big primes the Tamron 2.8 300 and the Sigma 4.0 500 the big white one, In the past really just used on my 99 ii and 77 ii curious if they would work with the Monster upgrade on the 7 iii , I did order one though having the old La 4 without mirror is pretty inviting

Appreciate the help

The LA-EA4 (after conversion called LA-EA4r) is only for screw drive lenses.
My understanding:
  • The LA-EA4 (before conversion) is for screw drive as well as SSM (in-lens motor) lenses. But the AF coverage for both screw and SSM lenses is the 15 AF points in the mirror unit in the adapter.
  • The LA-EA4r (after conversion) is only for screw drive lenses via the AF points in the host camera.
  • The LA-EA3 - for SSM lenses and the AF coverage is as for the host camera (AFAIK).

Just checking. Almost dark outside, but I grabbed my A7iii and my Tamron 24-70 f2.8 lens along with the LA-EA3 and LA-EA4 to verify.

Using the LA-EA3, autofocus worked perfectly.

Using the LA-EA4, autofocus worked, but it seemed a bit slower than with the LA-EA3. But then again, it is almost dark, and the SLT mirror does cost some amount of light.

could you please help me. Got the monster chip installed, focus motor kept spinning, have to remove the battery. I double checked everything, i uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times, same issue. I used 35mm 2.0. I put the original chip and mirror back, works again which proves i know what I'm going. Only thing i can think of is i have the stock firmware. Or a bad chip.

Please confirm if i have to update the monster firmware first, if I decide to use the original chip, will this monster firmware still work with the original chip? Please i know this is old post, hope you can help, really appreciate it!!!

Do your need to update the firmware first? Can it run with the stock firmware? After the new chip, my focus motor kept spinning. Please help. I was able to reverse back to the original chip and mirror. Luckily works

Have you tried it with another lens ? What happened?

Was that lens supported with an earlier firmware ? ( I think it was )
Or a bad chip.

Please confirm if i have to update the monster firmware first,
Check what firmware version it is currently running .

You do this in the venue setting where it says "firmware" or something similar .

On the same screen it tells you what firmware version the camera body is on , and what version the lens is on .

In this case , the lens is the adapter .

You don't need a lens on the adapter to check this .

Check on Monster adapters website what the current FW is .

Update if necessary.
if I decide to use the original chip, will this monster firmware still work with the original chip?
No . The Sony chip won't recognise it as a compatible firmware update and won't proceed.

But best to not mess about with it .

Or if you mean if you update the firmware on the monster adapter , will it effect the Sony chip ?

Then no , it's the chip that receives the update , not the rest of the adapter. So if you swap chips again , no harm done .
Please i know this is old post, hope you can help, really appreciate it!!!
Hope this helps make it clearer .

Do your need to update the firmware first?
For it to function at its best , use the most recent FW version .
Can it run with the stock firmware?
Yes , but it will not gain on later FW which can add compatibility, functions and bugs fixes .
After the new chip, my focus motor kept spinning. Please help. I was able to reverse back to the original chip and mirror. Luckily works
What camera are you using it on ?

It's not compatible with all cameras .

The camera has ( IIRC) to have full on sensor PDAF.

The original NEX cameras don't have PDAF, just CDAF .

The early alpha E Mount bodies had a hybrid AF system , which I do t believe is compatible .

It's just later bodies that are fully compatible.

If you put the adapter on a non compatible body , the AF motor just runs both ways but not locking focus on anything.

That sounds like what's happening with yours .

Thank you so much for your reply.
The current adapter version is 0.1 (stock) i never updated.

I tried Minolta 35mm 2.0 which is on the list.
camera = a7r2 (version 4.01)

The issue is the focus motor kept spinning, camera locked, no response to any buttons, even turn off, still spinning, until removed the battery.
I checked all the ribbon cables. If I update the monster firmware, will it still work with sony original chip?
