Canon R10: A small annoyance

I bought a Canon R10 when it was released. I admit I haven’t used it much. (prefer to use compact cameras) But when I do I usually take a lot of photo’s with it.

A few weeks ago I thought it was a good idea to customize a few buttons. I never change the transport mode so I wanted to assign the light metering method to that button.

I was pleasantly surprised to find 40 different options in the menu. (39 different option and the choice to assign nothing to the button) I look at all the option several times. But changing the light metering method wasn’t an option. Ok there is an option for activating a menu that has the light metering method in it. But that’s not the same.

I have contacted Canon asking them which option I should select to get the light metering method. At first they only sent me the instruction manual. (as if I hadn’t read that already) But after my second mail they got it. They were as surprised as I was that the light metering method could not be selected. I asked them if they could contact the development department to change this in the next firmware update.

A few days ago I got a mail from Canon that they would not add the light metering method.

I have done my best to inform Canon of what I think is a clear “omission” and I have given them the change to change it. They chose not to so now is the time to complain:

Dear Canon,

If you have 40 different functions that can be assigned to a button including “making a new folder” and different method’s of setting the iso and the white balance. But you left out the light metering method. Then either some people at the development department have been sleeping or you left it out on purpose.

Knowing and experiencing your reputation of leaving stuff out on purpose and your reluctance to solve this issue makes me fear you left it out on purpose.

No, I’m not going to sell my R10 and all of the lenses to jump to Sony of Fuji because of this. But I will remember this next time I want to buy a new camera.

What is "transport mode" button, please? Can't find any button with than name in the Manual.

Nope, there is no such a button either. Can you specify which button you are mentioning via the Manual: Part names (page 30-33) with corresponding button #. Thanks.

In the English R10 manual its called drive mode.
Drive mode lets you set how the camera will react to a shutter press: one shot, slow or fast burst mode, delayed shot, etc. FWIW, in French, they call it "Mode d'acquisition" in their manual, which could be translated to "Acquisition mode", if it helps in your own language.

Unfortunately, you can write all the mails you want to Canon asking them to change the behaviour of their cameras, I'm afraid there are extremely little chances they will take them in consideration. There are probably ways to assigning the function you need to another button.

On my EOS R I have to go through either the M-Fn button or the Q SET button to change either Drive Mode or Metering Mode. I change my Drive Mode maybe a couple of times a month. I change my Metering Mode far less frequently. The far bigger annoyance to me is having to change the function of one of my buttons to depth of field preview instead of having a dedicated button for that.

Here's the dedicated DOF preview button on the R10!! (Page 142) :)

I just checked on my R6 II, there is no way to assign the metering mode to any button. I guess it is the same on the R6. My apologies.

You are probably right but I think you have to try first before you start complaining.

Nope, tried every button. setting are the same for every button.

That would be very useful if I had an R10. Far more useful than the DOF buttons on my DSLRs, because the screens on those are too fine to show depth of field precisely, unlike an EVF. But it's missing from the R, RP, R8, R50 and R100 models.

I didn't look through the manuals of all those listed models, just the R8 and it says the Depth-of-field preview is available for customization to certain listed buttons. Worth to dig a bit deeper in the Manuals. Take care! :)

That is indeed an odd omission.

I was not aware that it was actually "missing" because I set exposure differently and don't use the meter except to maybe meter off my hand on occasion (I leave it at Center Weighted).

I wonder if it's because most people might use "Evaluative" metering now? (Not many "Manual" shooters around?). Has photography changed that much?

I checked, and you can't assign metering to a dial either. Hmmmm.

It probably is on all of them; I have my red button programmed for DOF preview on my R, but it's still an annoyance.

When I had my R, I set the red record button to Dof Preview, and found that very useful.

Metering mode is available via the Q menu / touch screen.

He’s referring to the red video record button on the EOS R, which is on the top plate. Only on the original R.
Does he? The title of the tread says R10. Nonethetheless, the OP still didn't come back to specify which button he'd like to customize. Still waiting for that info. BTW the red video record button also sits on the top plate of my R6 MK1.

On the R8 it is readily available on the M-Fn button. For 95+% of my shooting, Evaluative works pretty well, so I rarely change it.
