I'd ordered this several months ago and honestly completely forgot about it. Adding to the fun, B&H's email about shipping went to spam.

So guess who was surprised today when this showed up. Time to go play with it and see what it can do.

I really want to try this lens out/buy it. Please keep us posted on your findings.

What's your initial impression on the color of the lens body? Is it as purple/blue as some early reviewer's images hint at?

*hate to be Matchy-Matchy... but I'm fairly Matchy-Matchy :P

LOL - totally understand this. It's not really purple/blue - there is a blue ring at the top, and the general aesthetic of the lens is clearly different to the native Nikon Z lenses. It's not exactly ugly per se, but I would not say it is as nice looking at the Z lenses. Construction seems pretty solid despite the aesthetic shortcomings.

I'm hoping to spend some time taking random pictures in the next few days. I'll post some of the good and bad things here when I've done that.

Awesome! Thank you! :-)

Sure. Looking at it in different lighting situations, there definitely is a little bit of a blueish cast to the color that does seem to render a little purplish on the computer ...

let us know how it goes and maybe post some samples. Not that I would run out and buy this immediately, it does look like something I may consider in the future for architecture (especially if it's AF) and maybe the occasional night photography (astro photography).

Definitely. Hoping to get out with it in the next few days. It is autofocus, so that base is covered.

I got it because I wanted to play with very wide lenses, and I thought it may be good for astrophotography (not that I've ever done that and the opportunities around me are not all that frequent or good, but it's the thought that counts, right? :) )

Yes, please keep us updated. This is a very interesting lens. It's probably very usable on DX also. I love super wide lenses, so I'm keenly interested.

Yeah I'm always sort of interested in these more "budget" options particularly for lenses that I may not use all that much (although this one I think is $800 so not really "budget" but probably cheaper than many others out there).

Mine arrived a few weeks ago but due to a heavy work schedule I haven’t been able to play with it much. I took some shots around home and it’s quite fun. Takes some getting used to because framing images is a different ballgame this wide. It’s well built and AF is quiet and fast.

Indeed, the 3 or so indoor shots that I've taken with it have shown the "interesting" framing with such a wide lens, and the perspective changes on long edges that are close is also fun to see. Initial impressions on build quality and AF concur with yours. Hopefully I'll get out some this weekend - same work problem for me.

We’re about to go on a 10 day vacation. Can’t wait! I’ll take some time with it on my Z8!

Awesome! Thank you! :-)

Taking it outside into various different lights, I'm going to revise my answer - yes, there most definitely is a blue/purple cast to the lens and it is a little disconcerting to anyone who wants things to be matchy-matchy.

Test images to follow shortly as soon as I figure out why I can't upload large images ...

Ok, here are some initial snapshots with the Laowa on a Z8. I've included all the metadata so that you can examine that at your leisure. There very definitely is fairly severe vignetting, which I've corrected in some of the pictures.

I'm deliberately not commenting on my impressions because I don't want to color anyone's impressions on the lens, but I'd really love to see what people think about it all. These are not works of art - take them in the spirit of me saying "ah screw it, it's Friday afternoon, I don't feel like working, so I'm going to go for a short drive with my camera and new lens and see what I can take random pictures of". In other words - artistry is not paramount here.

Oh, and you've gotta love the name of the lens that comes in the EXIF information - LAOWA FFII 10mm F2.8 C&D Dreamer

That's a little disappointing, especially for an $800 lens. And that's sad because I've been eyeing their 100 2X macro lenses but might hold off as I'm starting to wonder about QC in general. I mean if it was a one-off copy (bad copy) then that might be one thing, but sometimes these things are not.

To be clear - I'm talking about the color of the lens body, and not any color cast that the lens creates in an image taken with the lens. I do not see any color cast in images taken from the lens.
