The big downside I see is the maximum ISO of 400. The kind of
people likely to use this thing shoot a lot in low light. I can't
imagine choosing this camera when alternatives like the Canon 10D
give extremely good results at ISO 1600.
I don't think this camera will be widely accepted by the
professionals and enthusiasts who worship the Leica M-series until
they put a larger sensor in that's capable of higher ISO
performance.
Also, while I applaud the big LCD, I'm not sure this camera's
target audience is ready for an EVF. I'd much rather have a good
optical rangefinder setup like the real M-series cameras.
Still -- nit-picking aside -- it's good to see Leica and Panasonic
attempting something different and innovative. You have to give
them a lot of credit for that.

I think that the major problem of this camera is the viewfinder. I do not understand why Leica do not use an optical viewfinder (with a 3x zoom it is not a problem). The top will be if theywill use a rangefinder like the film Leica. The EVF give you the vision of the whole picture but has many problem in dark situations, instead with an optical rangefinder you can see and focus everywhere. The leica version of Panasonic DMC-LC1 is announced:

why would leica wager its name to such an extend to release a digital m7 and only delivering mediocre results for a high price? apart from noice at higher iso's I really like results of oly a1 that also has 5 mp... I withhold my opinion on quality, let alone the price quality ratio until I see some final results (preferably on paper!) Although i must admid that quality has to be very very good to compete for my €1800...So this is only a new compact camera with the Leica brand for the
nostalgical of this brand or for the newbie that heared that "Leica
is the best" but knowing nothink of Leica and of photography, but
absolutely cannot be compared to the true Leica or also to the DSLR
for the image quality and the usability
Jan, the pictures you posted on the Leica are not visible for some reason, the link below has severalpictures and an interesting commentary, although it is in spanish ( which I can understand )very nice looking camera... have been eying the panasonic version
some time now... looking at the inscriptions on the lens the lens
is also capable of AF (autofocus)!!!! I thougth to have read
reports that it would only have manual focussing?
nice specs on evf and lcd!!!

my canon s45 portfolio can be seen at http://www.xs4all.nl/~jwmars at
my 'recent archives' there. Reactions appreciated.

Although some are already complaining about the EVF, It looks like
Leica had a point in having it instead of an optical rangefinder:
the camera is big due to its probable 77mm diam. zoom lens (
f2.0-2.4 ). and a rangefinder woud make it even bigger to avoid
having the lens barrel interfering with it like the Canon G3/G5 (
as per the article ). A high resolution EVF is better than a poor
rangefider! There's also a large LCD monitor ( seems 2.2" ).
Also very interesting are the mechanical rings for zoom, focus and
aperture on the lens barrel and manual speed selector on the top of
the camera.
Those are some of the highlights of the camera, but still in a
guesswork basis!
