I really like the idea of this camera -- it's not unlike a Canon G3 in features, but with stronger connections to traditional photography gear (like the manual shutterspeed dial).

The big downside I see is the maximum ISO of 400. The kind of people likely to use this thing shoot a lot in low light. I can't imagine choosing this camera when alternatives like the Canon 10D give extremely good results at ISO 1600.

I don't think this camera will be widely accepted by the professionals and enthusiasts who worship the Leica M-series until they put a larger sensor in that's capable of higher ISO performance.

Also, while I applaud the big LCD, I'm not sure this camera's target audience is ready for an EVF. I'd much rather have a good optical rangefinder setup like the real M-series cameras.

Still -- nit-picking aside -- it's good to see Leica and Panasonic attempting something different and innovative. You have to give them a lot of credit for that.

It's being listed at 1,800 Euros though. Doesn't that put you off?!

Priced an M6 and lens lately? The closer they get to the performance of an M6, the more they can charge and get away with it. I agree though, this one probably isn't close enough to get my money.

... to release the lens ;-)

The rest looks very nice, should get a really good and sharp EVF, let's hope - also for a lower price!

I think that the major problem of this camera is the viewfinder. I do not understand why Leica do not use an optical viewfinder (with a 3x zoom it is not a problem). The top will be if theywill use a rangefinder like the film Leica. The EVF give you the vision of the whole picture but has many problem in dark situations, instead with an optical rangefinder you can see and focus everywhere.

An other problem is the CCD sensor: 2/3 is too small: for an acceptable quality an APS format is needed at minimun.

So this is only a new compact camera with the Leica brand for the nostalgical of this brand or for the newbie that heared that "Leica is the best" but knowing nothink of Leica and of photography, but absolutely cannot be compared to the true Leica or also to the DSLR for the image quality and the usability

why would leica wager its name to such an extend to release a digital m7 and only delivering mediocre results for a high price? apart from noice at higher iso's I really like results of oly a1 that also has 5 mp... I withhold my opinion on quality, let alone the price quality ratio until I see some final results (preferably on paper!) Although i must admid that quality has to be very very good to compete for my €1800...

Jan, the pictures you posted on the Leica are not visible for some reason, the link below has severalpictures and an interesting commentary, although it is in spanish ( which I can understand )

http://www.webpersonal.net/fotoimagendigital/panasoniclc1.htm

Although some are already complaining about the EVF, It looks like Leica had a point in having it instead of an optical rangefinder: the camera is big due to its probable 77mm diam. zoom lens ( f2.0-2.4 ). and a rangefinder woud make it even bigger to avoid having the lens barrel interfering with it like the Canon G3/G5 ( as per the article ). A high resolution EVF is better than a poor rangefider! There's also a large LCD monitor ( seems 2.2" ).

Also very interesting are the mechanical rings for zoom, focus and aperture on the lens barrel and manual speed selector on the top of the camera.

Those are some of the highlights of the camera, but still in a guesswork basis!

It's enormous! Why such a big front element on such a slow lens?

With a lens of that size on a small chip, it's a shame they couldn't have done something exciting (f1.0 noctilux on a compact anyone?)

As others have pointed out, the camera is limited by its small & cheap sensor. With a relatively slow lens, it will also be poor for 'decisive moment' pictures. A very great disappointment - this isn't the digital version of the M series.

still nice to see, that a rangefinder camera is moveing into digital,..
on the EVF I don't know, looks like a trend,...
nice 2.5" LCD,... nice lens,,, well the CCD is small,... guess they had to make
sacrifices,... but down the road, that could be easily changed,...
the biggest bummer, is that the lens is not changeable,...for all the folks,

who have already lenses,...but probably saves a lots of complains about focus point,... and what about, no CF slot, arghh, a 1.5phoud camera with no CF,...
does anybody know, who makes that CCD ?
cheers, Robert

Maybe this will be more affordable than we thought.
