X-T5 vs X-H2

Hi,

I’m hoping to crowdsource some feedback here on the X-T5 & the X-H2 as I’m considering upgrading my body from the X-T4 to take advantage of the new AF system in the new cameras. The X-T4 AF just misses too much for my liking, and since getting my X100VI I guess I’ve gotten used to it nailing focus 99% of the time for me.

So, here’s my issue, I have two main concerns;

- How much does a grip help the X-T5 with bigger lenses like the 150-600 & 50-140?

- How does the X-H2 look with the f2 primes? Does it look silly?

I keep going back and forth on which one to get, and these are my main two bug bears.

I do some events with the 50-140, and the X-T4 isn’t comfortable but I make do. I can only imagine it’d feel worse on the smaller X-T5, and a future purchase will be the 150-600 and I’d imagine that would feel awkward … so wondering how a grip may help there?

Secondly, I absolute love the f2 primes … but do they look out of place on the X-H2 body? Something in my gut tells me that it’d almost look silly like a toy? Happy for feedback here

So yeah, any feedback on either point would be nice, or any other anecdotal feedback would be nice.

Cheers!

You will need a third party grip for the X-T5. I think it's more about hand size except for verticals and then only some grips will help. A tripod or monopod will help even more for the 150-600.

It looks like a camera. How would a wedding photographer look using a phone?

The grip may help you balance the X-H2 with the 150-600. It will be nice for verticals.

They look like a lens on the camera.

Yes it helps for sure. I use a SmallRig grip when using my bigger and heavier lenses like the 50-140.

I had the X-T4 previously and traded it for the X-T5 mainly because of the number of focus misses with the former, and also much prefer the X-T5 screen. With or without the grip, I am happier with the ergonomics of the 5, and lower number of misses.

I've stopped using grips and don't really miss them. They took too much room up in my camera bag where every inch and ounce is precious when travelling. I could use them when I'm not away of course but I've found it easy enough to adapt to not bothering with them at all.

I did the same thing with my X-T3 + 100-400 combo, and even with the 150-600. I ditched the battery grip (just left on an L-Bracket)

I have average to large hands and the camera body is just fine without the grip.

Hi Alan,

Do you change batteries when shooting in the rain?

Morris

Yeah, not often that I run out of battery but if needs be, yes.

You mean stopping using accesory grips? Your X-H1 and X-H2S both have grips! Or what do you mean? For me coming from X-T2 to X-H1 to X-T4 with Smallrig grip, it's clear: a camera with built in grip is what I will go with for my next upgrade, and not a camera that requires an accesory grip. I have no problem with fitting my X-H1 with e.g. the XF50-140 in the PD 10L sling. This even if I don't like the FASs, but think I can get used to the PASM dial UI over the traditional dials. In that sense, the X-H1 is perfect for me, but I do not expect Fujifilm to revert to that design.

For me coming from X-T2 to X-H1 to X-T4 with Smallrig grip, it's clear: a camera with built in grip is what I will go with for my next upgrade, and not a camera that requires an accesory grip. I don't use additional grips be it OEM battery vertical grips, smallrig etc etc. 99% of the time it's camera as it is. I may use a L bracket now and again if I am doing landscape stuff wihich is about once or twice per year.

Really, if possible, try to find a camera store that will let you hold an X-T5. On paper, I thought it looked really good but when I handled the camera it felt like the controls were too cramped for my hands (not overly large hands, size L with gloves). I already have the X-H2 which feels really well laid out and the width and height are closer to your X-T4 (the H2 is deeper though). I have the battery grip but for travel prefer not to take it. I also use a Smallrig cage. When I use that camera or the X-H2s with the 150-600, I almost always use the battery grip...very nicely balanced combination, but would be fine using it without the grip. I've used the camera with small lenses but never really thought about how it looked (I think it didn't seem out of place or I would have noticed).

I use the X-H2 with the 27 2.8 and it doesn't look silly, at least to me. Works well. Also works well with my 18mm 1.4, a much larger lens. I got the X-H2 for the viewfinder and grip mostly. I like to carry it one handed, with the strap looped in my other hand loosely.

The AF seems good but for the way I shoot (back button af, s-af) it's not much different from the XH1. I haven't really tried c-af or the various detection modes.

I have never needed a grip on my XT5. I upgraded from a XT4 for the handling, AF and screen improvements. I do have a leather half case on it, which improves holding without adding noticeable weight or bulk.

I have never bought into the argument that a smaller body needs a grip for large lenses. For me, the bulk/weight of a camera/lens combo (my normal lens is the 16-55/f2.8 and the 70-300/f5.6) should be supported by the left and not the right hand. I find using my 100-400 on my XT5 fine.

I have been very impressed with image quality of the newer 150-600 and as Fuji UK currently has a cashback offer, it is very tempting. If I did weaken and trade-in the 100-400 for the 150-600 I do not see myself buying a grip. Of course, if you opt for XT5 + 150-600 you can always get a metal grip to try and decide yourself.
- How does the X-H2 look with the f2 primes? Does it look silly?
Why should it? I agree the Fujicron f2s are little marvels.
I keep going back and forth on which one to get, and these are my main two bug bears.
When I upgraded from the XT4 to the XT5 I went to the shop (Fuji's House of Photography in Covent Garden, London) and handled both the XT5 and the XH2. I concluded that the outputs from each, bar one feature, would be the same for any given lens. The bar one feature was the smaller buffer in the XT5 compared with the XH2. I shoot a lot of sequences covering sports. That said, my experience is that the XT5 buffer is manageable, but my use case is not very demanding (sequences of 10-15 seconds at 7fps, RAW+ Fine). So, for me it came down to personal preference of body ergonomics - I chose the XT5. No regrets.
Hope that helps.

By "a grip" I assume you mean some sort of bolt-on, non-electronic physical grip as there is no battery grip for the X-T5. If you want a functional grip with buttons, get the X-H2.
- How does the X-H2 look with the f2 primes? Does it look silly?
How silly does your X-T4 look with the 50-140 attached? The X-H2 looks much better in your hand than the X-T5 does lying on the ground after you drop it because it has no grip.
I keep going back and forth on which one to get, and these are my main two bug bears.

With a large lens attached, you hold the lens more than the camera regardless of what camera it is. It's a question of balance.
Secondly, I absolute love the f2 primes … but do they look out of place on the X-H2 body? Something in my gut tells me that it’d almost look silly like a toy? Happy for feedback here

I like having the option of a battery grip with the X-H2/S even though I don't use it often. Bolt-on hand grips with no electronic functions seem utterly pointless to me. Why buy a small camera and then bolt something on to make it big?

Sounds like you are more concerned with the aesthetics of what you look like holding the camera than what the camera can actually do for you. The X-H and X-T designs are significantly different. If you like the top dial functionality of your X-T4, you'll probably like the X-T5. If you'd prefer more front and back dial control while looking through the viewfinder, the X-H2 is the one.

it is noticeably better than my XT3. When using my 150-600 I don’t need an extra grip. But on the other hand I don’t use it very often.

I chose the XT5 because I like the dials interface and the smaller size. But I think, the XH2 has a bigger buffer…
