They never produced a FF superzoom, and killed off the 18-270 crop superzoom. I have the older 18-250 for the K5, and film era 28-300. If they made an equivalent of that Nikon on I'd buy it. Actually that's the only lens I'm really lacking these days - although I didn't know I wanted the DFA 21 Ltd until they made it.
 
I think those Z Group guys have been reading your posts PentUp.

I'm surprised the B&H price for this monster is only $1296 USD.

If it reviews anything like their recent 24-200mm lens then not interested! Sure its a superzoom full of compromises but it just has too many compromises.

I'm not a tele photo guy so I have no skin in the superzoom game, but actually from what I've read, the complaints on these lenses tend to be edge CA, vignetting, and distortion -- all of which can be (mostly) corrected in the modern Z cameras set up, or in post.

Which leaves the other problem, not much maximum aperture but I guess that's the nature of the beast. Compromise, as you say...

I'm a grumpy purist LOL If I'm going to put down good money on a lens it better have been designed well to begin with, not designed to be fixed with software edits. You see all kinds of lenses with hefty vignetting these days, the vignetting is used to conceal worse aberrations that cannot be fixed in post, however when we're talking about 3+ stops of vignetting, ISO100 in the center becomes ISO800 in the corners... not to bad when there is a lot of available light, but what if you're at ISO1600 in the center? now all of a sudden your corners are at a whopping ISO12800. Distortion, I expect a degree of distortion and on a mirrorless system with auto corrections you'll never know, however is the focal length what you get before or after the distortion correction is applied and with an SLR your framing way well be off as you can't see a distortion free image through the OVF. In both of these cases I accept a degree or vignetting and distortion, but not the amount I've seen on many new lenses over recent years. CA unless excessive is usually not something I'm overly worried about. I will accept design issues if what I'm getting has unique enough features and capabilities that I'm willing to overlook the flaws.

Or... you can do both, as you have done. I've kept my Pentax kit and am slowly building up new Z system gear. There's no real urgency to acquire the new gear, as the old Pentax gear has worked for years, and still does.

I do enjoy taking the KP, or even the K5 plus a couple of little primes in my pockets for a day of shooting now and then, and while the Z cameras do almost everything better, at the end of the day, the people I share images with can't tell the Z images from the Pentax images. I think the limitation for all these new cameras is the viewing systems we typically use.

The last image which my little local group acknowledged as "best" was taken with a trashed out, scratched, and dust laden Ricoh GRii, a little work in Post to clean up the dust, and damn, doesn't that just annoy those of us with new gear :-D

I have started getting Nikon gear such as the Nikon D500, Nikon AF 200-500 f5.6, Nikon 180 2.8, Nikon 18-200, Nikon AF 35mm. Pentax has not produced anything I was interested in for years and I have shot Pentax since the 1980's. I will keep all my Pentax gear ut use the nikon stuff first. Sad but true, Pentax has fallen behind.

There is no customer base big enough to justify and cover investment in developing and NPI of such lens. Forget.

They?

18-250 and 18-270 were Tamron OEM lenses built by Tamron. Tamron stopped all DSLR lenses because Tamron see no future in such segment and turned completely into mirrorless systems.

Even 15-30/2.8, 24-70/2.8 and 70-210/4 will be gone soon once stored stock is depleted.

Pentax only has one "superzoom" the 18-135WR. Apparently still in production. Might be turned into HD-DA sooner or later.

Even 10 000 customes won't save it.

Lens development takes 3-5 years, whole team of engineers is working on it. You have to do optical design, mechanical design, electronics and software. Such team might be 30-40 guys. Count how much it cost only to cover their wages. Now add the cost of all the equipment, prototyping, toolings, NPI, test runs, whole testing etc. You'll end up with couple millions of dolars investment that needs to be covered by following sales of such lens + you need to generate some profit.

Sigma or Tamron can do that, because they sell even several millions of some products. But Ricoh is not able to do this. And now they lost all the 3rd party support because everybody abandoned DSLR designs and it makes no sense for them to develop and produce some lens only for one tiny system.

I'm still curious how many guys are left in Pentax related R&D. But I have no luck finding any realistic data. But concerning how little new designs we saw during last decade it might be well below 100 and probably some shared with other RIcoh projects.
 
Reporting for my small-town newspaper, I've found that the 18-270 covers just about everything. But its main value is that it makes me look professional -- big camera, big lens. People -- and police -- take you more seriously when you cart around a big camera.

But there are days when you just run into a story, unexpected. And my Apple phone is always there, and sometimes my Ricoh GR. Shirt pocket cameras. Nowhere near the ergonomics of my Pentax DSLR... the iPhone is particularly horrible... but they are there, with the DSLR left at home. Life!

Perhaps the Tamron 18-400mm lens design will appear as a future Z DX Nikkor for the APS-C models? ;-)
