Sony 40 f2.5 G new, or Zeiss Batis 40 f2 used - same price?

What would you choose for street photography, general walk around lens?

I read that Batis image quality does not support it's price new, but what about used, when price is the same as a new Sony pancake lens? Which one is better at the same price?

If you ask this way, used gear will have significant advantage. I like compact lenses, I would go for used 40f2.5 :-)

I would get the FE 40mm f/2.5 G 😎

I had the Batis 40mm and it's a really nice lens. I currently have the 40mm f2.5G and it's a great lens as well. I sold the Batis because for me, it was too bulky for my intended use - street and travel. Drew too much attention to me and bigger to pack for trips. The Sony 40mm addresses the issue I had with the Batis as it's tiny, discreet and great optically.

For me size and weight play into my decision process consistently now, as I have seen that if it's too big (for me) I want bring it. The gear will sit at home and no value in having great gear technically but stays home.

I also strongly favor light weight. I have the Batis 40, which is great but bulky. Weight is not as much as one would expect from that bulk. I have 24g which is superb. I've not tried the 40g, but the reviews are good.

In most cases the Sony will always outdo a Batis in IQ. In the case of the 40s they are extremely similar with (from my evaluations) no real winner. Where the Sony triumphs soundly is in size & weight. The Batis is double the weight of the Sony. So for size weight, and especially cost - the Sony wins hands down.

I have the Sony 40 2.5 and it is a delightfully small, light sharp lens with good contrast that is moderately priced. Bokeh is ok for such a small lens. It is unobtrusive, fits under a jacket or rain coat when needed and takes fine photos. I have never tried the Batis.

I've had the 40 Batis for years. Don't use it much, but it's my favorite garden lens. Great for those semi close ups. Really sharp at closer focus. Pictures have great colors.

I had the Sony 40mm G. Another sharp lens, but closer distance performance not up to the Batis. Sometimes wish I had kept the Sony. Makes for a compact setup on one of the A7C's.

Now have the Samyang 35mm f/1.8. Another sharp lens across the whole field, even wide open, if you get a good one. Not really better than the 40 G. Just a bit different strengths and weaknesses.

It seems that most people on this thread favour the 40/2.5.

I had both but my verdict is somewhat different: the 40/2.5 is remarkably small, ultra sharp but also boring as. Nothing special, character is bland, sharp and imho forgettable.

The Batis 40/2 CF (close focus) has character and in particular the oof rendering is remarkable, the sometimes disputed 3-D look at work. One of the best lenses I have ever used.

And yet, I sold it, the Batis with regrets and the Sony 40/2.5 with pleasure. Here is why: although the Batis had some remarkable rendering and was light enough, it was also rather voluninous. During the day, I typically use a non-offensive canvas bag, that screams hippie, but not camera so much, the Batis felt odd. I use vented sunshades on my lenses, but the design of the Batis only really allows the use of the original sunshade, it was always a matter of reversing the sunshade every time I put it away.

I now use the 35/1.4. Similar if not the same volume, but F1.4.

But to be honest, if another 402 Batis comes my way, I might just re-buy it. Posting on my phone, otherwise I could have posted some pics.

Good luck with your decision, but don't disregard character 😉

I'm with others in the for the intended purpose the 40G makes more sense, but I actually think the LoCA wide open and the average rendering are perfectly valid knocks against it... There's a few slightly larger lenses with more pleasing rendering imo but none have the feature set of the 40G (aperture wheel + sealing + fast focus). I went for the Samyang 45/1.8 which is a little larger but still smaller than most other alternatives, the extra speed over the 40G just seemed useful to me.

If the 35/1.4 you're using is the GM, you might be interested in the square hood Haoge makes for it, complete with slip on metal cap, makes it handle so much better than a reversible hood IMO.
