Darktable 4.4 Released

Just tested my style with the new build and did a few tweaks to make sure it works with the new version. All good but one thing is driving me nuts!

Input Color Profile!

It appears that regardless of what my profile is set to or even if when darktable loads its default profile the Input color profile can be be different requiring it to be reset even after applying your profile or loading a fresh file.

On different cameras its also different. sometimes it loads srgb or standard color matrix when it should be embeded matrix. often it loads linear req709 when linear req 2020 should be used. Anyway it seems inconsistent and infuriating, shouldnt need to have to mess with this. Sure i can reset it but im not doing this all the time, must be a bug or compatibility issue.

Anyone else seeing this issue?
If you think there is a problem, post an issue report darktable@github - Issues. My experience with OSS is that you often get a quick reply and in many cases the problem is solved in short time.

Its all good. I raised a ticket shortly after posting. They aknowledged it and fixed it in the nightly build very quickly. Think i mention this either earlier in this thread or another.

I had a quick look. Very clunky and no option to print from Windows. Now uninstalled.

With yet ANOTHER new module..

Really?

Is Darktable nothing more than a venue for the developers to demonstrate their coding skills?

Here's a thought, clean up the UI. Eliminate all the modules that are superfluous. Don't force your users to be programmers to use your application.

I've neither the time or compunction to dive into the myriad of books and crannies which makes up Darktable.

I've seen posts from users that it took them 6 months during the COVID epidemic to come up to speed with Darktable. Whisky Tango Foxtrot? In those same 6 months I post processed some 60,000 images in Capture One.

Give me Capture One, ART or Lightzone any day of the week.

If the developers found that they have gone the wrong way, or have found better pathes, should they follow the old way?

It is very simple in DT, there is an option to display only the current recommended modules, or stay with the old/legacy modules. It is your choice!

It is OK if you not like DT, everyone has a different taste.

It takes less than 1 minute to remove any module from the interface you don't like. Just keep the basic ones there. What's better, is that every time darktable is updated, your custom list will be preserved so you never need to see anything new, just the way you like it.

Take a look at Ansel (= Darktable Fork). I think old modules were thrown out there and the UI was better structured.

Edit:

At least that's what I've read

I have moved to Digikam/Darktable instead of Adobe. Really happy. Either watch 10min youtube on scene referred editing, or use the template for screen referred editing and make one click in the settings.

It also comes with great templates OR an easy way to apply LUTs - aka presets in lightroom. Also it does come with a great module for frames, which Adobe still lacks today.

It is very powerful, and I am grateful to the developers. Havent found a way yet to donate :(

Presets go way beyond a trivial LUT application. If you really think that LUTs equate the presets in LR then you have grossly misunderstood the scope of the latter...

Darktable styles are the equivalent of LR presets.
