Bracketing on a Tripod

I've only shot birds on my Z8. Now I'm wondering when I'm shooting landscape on a tripod, how to bracket without holding the shutter down. I'd like to use the self timer to initiate the shot and then have the camera take the bracketed shots I've set without having to hold my finger down on the shutter button.

Does anyone know how to do this? I'm afraid my googling is not giving me the answer I want.

Thank you!

On my Z7, when I select Auto Bracketing and enable the 2-second self timer, the camera takes the number of shots I have selected for the bracket ( for example 3 or 7 )

Short answer: The camera should do exactly what you're asking.

This works very well on my Z6.

c2 Self Timer: delay = 2s, number of shots = 1, interval between shots = 1s

(from my i-menu) Auto bracket: Auto exposure, number of shots = 3, increment = 1.0.

Press the shutter, 2 seconds later it shoots, then finishes the set with 1 second between each shot. On a Z8, there's no need for a delay between the successive shots, unlike using a mechanical shutter, where the delay can help with shutter shock.

~~~
(there's also e7 Bracketing order. I like "under > MTR > over" so they are all in sequence, instead of the "MTR > under > over" selection.)
~~~

(I don't bracket very often, and when I do, it's usually handheld. So I set the bracketing count to 3 or 5 and switch to continuous shooting instead of single shot. Then it takes a full set of images and stops automatically. I just hold the shutter button down. Otherwise, each image requires a separate shutter press.)

I just confirmed curiousmike’s answer.
  1. set the shutter sound to high, just to confirm.
  2. set photo shooting -> auto bracketing to 3 shots.
  3. set shutter mode to self-timer (probably doesn’t matter the delay but I set it to 2 seconds).
  4. Compose, then press-and-release the shutter button.
Two seconds later the camera takes three shots at the bracket settings.

Sorry for my delayed response....this sounds like what I'm after. Thanks so much!

My apologies for a delayed response. Thank you so much. I'm going to try this later today. Inside since it's raining lol. It's been a minute since I've taken bracketed landscapes....probably since my D750 so I needed some help haha.

When you enable bracketing on the camera the camera should automaticlaly take the desired number of shots you set up (so if it's 5, it will automatically take the 5 shots with the proper adjustment to exposure you set up in the Bracketing settings). This applies to all Z cameras as far as I know. Make sure to set the camera to Single (shot) mode, as Continuous requires you to hold down the shutter, which you don't want on a tripod).

If you're doing handheld brackets, then it's reversed -- use Continuos shooting mode.

plus the number of brackets called for in the bracketing function over rides the number of interval shots set in #c2 ... so #c2 can be "1" but the brackets will be taken as specified, but at the interval specified in #c2. This is good because it means you can leave #c2 at "1" where you might be most likely to use it when not bracketing; just isolating for motion on tripod.

This is incorrect information, I think. Or it is poorly worded. It sounds like you are saying that in single-shot mode, if you set a bracketing interval the camera will shoot all shots in the sequence with one shutter press. That is not the case.

If the camera is in single-shot mode, each time you press the shutter button it takes one shot. The BKT indicator in the EVF or monitor shows hothead number of shots left in the sequence. If you have set up a five-shot bracketing sequence, you must press the shutter button five times.

If the camera is in any continuous mode, just press and hold the shutter button and it will take all shots in the sequence at once, and then stop shooting. If you press and release then it will take as many of the shots in the sequence as it can for the duration that the shutter was held down. Again, the BKT indicator will then show how many frames are left in the sequence.

Whether or not the camera is on a tripod is not relevant.

This is basically what you said in a previous reply. In single shot drive mode, you start the exposure with the first press, and the camera takes the remaining shots on its own. It may be worded funny, but that's basically what I've said here. I probably didnt clarify that you only have to press the shutter button once (or trip the shutter once) per sequence. That I probably omitted.

OK, what we both omitted here is that my previous answer requires you to use the self-timer.

Self-timer: the camera fires all shots in the sequence when the timer expires.

No self-timer: works as I describe above.

Clearing up a couple of steps, via actual tests on my Z6:

(when testing this, I set up the options, but hey, it didn't wait 2 seconds to start. Oh, of course--I have to press the Release Mode button and switch to Self Timer!)

~~~
Bracketing shows on the display as "AE bkt" and "3/3" three shots to go of the set of three. It counts down 2/3 and 1/3, Then back to 3/3 for a new set.
One photo per shutter press in Single shot mode, counting down.
Or the whole set, then stop, with holding down one shutter press in any continuous mode (and there's no delay between exposures).
Or the whole set on one button press with the starting delay and between shots delays, in Self Timer mode.
c2 Self Timer:
Self timer delay = 2s
Number of shots = 1 (This only applies to using the self timer without bracketing. for example, 10 s delay, take 3 shots...a good "selfie" mode. In bracketing mode, it always shoots one image per bracket step.)
interval between shots = 0.5s, 1s, 2s, 3s. I used 1s. Does the Z8 allow a shorter interval than 1/2 second? the online manual page doesn't say. That's not useful for non-bracketing self timer shots, of course, so it probably doesn't allow "0 s".
Bracketing:
The bracketing settings are on menu button--> Photo Shooting menu.. Scroll way down to Auto Bracketing.
types of bracketing: AE &flash, AE, flash, WB white balance, or ADL--Active D lighting Off or various values, depending on number of shots. I've only used "AE".
Number of shots: 0 (off) to 9
Increment: 0.3 to 3 stops (for AE bracketing)
at 1/3 EV, the Number of Shots choices are:
Code, shots, shot sequence (for MTR>under>over).
0F, 0, 0
+3F, 3, 0/+0.3/+0.7
−3F, 3, 0/–0.7/–0.3
+2F, 2, 0/+0.3
−2F, 2, 0/–0.3
3F, 3, 0/–0.3/+0.3
5F, 5, 0/–0.7/–0.3/+0.3/+0.7
7F, 7, 0/–1.0/–0.7/–0.3/+0.3/+0.7/+1.0
9F, 9, 0/–1.3/–1.0/–0.7/–0.3/+0.3/+0.7/+1.0/+1.3
"for exposure increments of 2 EV or more, the maximum number of shots is 5."
~~~

I use the i-menu version of this Photo Shooting-->Auto Bracketing, with the same options, but fewer text prompts on screen.

And I have the c2 Self Timer and d4 Exposure delay mode next to each other on the first page of My Menu, with the red video button launching My Menu.

~~~
Other bracketing related settings:
menu --> e bracketing/flast menu --> e6 auto bracketing (mode M) has 4 choices: flash/speed, flash/speed/aperture, flash/aperture, flash only. I've never used these.
and
e7 Bracketing order I like the shots taken in Under >MTR(meter)>over, instead of MTR > under > over. The exposures are in sequence when I review in my photo editor. Either way, the final image of the sequence is shown first when pressing Image Review on the camera, which for 3F is the "over" exposed one.
Perhaps getting the metered exposure taken first has a small advantage in fast moving scenes -- get the good exposure, then shoot the under and overs.
~~~

Powering off and back on:

The Self Timer release mode reverts back to my usual "S" single shot.

The bracketing doesn't reset, it's still in effect. And self timer settings never change, of course, since it's controlled by the Release Mode.

I think it sounds like the OP may know how to set up the bracketing but wasn't sure how to trip the shutter to start the process. The self timer with a press of the shutter or a remote is the only real option here (with the camera in "S" drive mode obviously).
