Sorry for the possibly naive question, but what are these two circular buttons on the lens? None of my other lenses have these.

The generic "manual" that comes with the lens doesn't say it, and the Canon website doesn't seem to have a better user manual for the lens.

By default they are AF stop buttons.

They can also be programmed as function buttons, depending on camera used.

Ah, thanks! I now see it in the R5 user manual.

And it seems that even though there are two buttons, they are the same - can't see a way to customize them separately. Let me know if I'm wrong...

Are you sure that's not where the airbags deploy from, if the camera or body detects that it's getting dropped!!

Would be awesome if the buttons can be programmed to a focus distance preset. That will give an fast way to pull focus back to the front when it’s stuck in the background

Indeed, they are the same.

The reason the button is duplicated is to hace it in the same place for both “landscape” and “portrait” orientation, much like the extra buttons and dials on the vertical shooting grip.

Does anyone know if they can be programmed as "AF Preset" buttons? To go to a previously set focusing distance?

That would be my own preferred use case for them.
