New firmware for several EOS R bodies

I'm trying to update mymy R7 from 1.3 to 1.40

I've done many Canon updates so this process isn't new to me, however my R7 has locked

on the screen . . .

Firmware update program______
Update Firmware?
1.30 --> 1.40
EOSR7140.FIR
[Cancel] [ OK ]

I left it for 10 minutes and then tried to power off the camera
but it will not repond to the Power switch

I'm tempted to remove the battery but I'm concerned that this will brick the camera

Ideas ?

Peter

EDIT: I hit the Set button and the camera switched to normal screen

EDIT: I tried using a different SD card - this time an empty one which I had just formatted in-camera and the Update started OK and is proceeding normally.

I don't recall havng to use an empty card before, but the card I tried initially was almost full so maybe the update process needs some space . . . anyway the update has now completed

Same problem for me, I have also 1.3.0 on the camera. Downloaded and tried to install 1.3.1, same problem: no way to get to the OK button. Tried with 2 cards, Lexar Pro V60 128 Gb. Both formatted in-camera just before copying the file. Camera set to P mode too. In one instance, could not shut down the camera, had to remove battery. Lens attached: RF 18-150.

Update: I tried to attach an old Canon EF lens, with the RF-EF adapter. Same issue.
I did not have lens attached when it locked up or when it did run the update

Added support for RS-s 10-18 to all but the original R6. No update for R5 and older models. Does that mean the 10-18 would not work on older bodies?
Is there anyone who wants to use an RF-S lens on a full frame camera? In that case the FF camera will automatically switch to 1.6 crop mode, e.g. in case of the R6 MK1 it would mean the resolution will drop to 7.1 Mplx. Just sayin'. :)

I've always used a "fresh" SD card that was formatted in the camera, even if it was only used for firmware updates before. Format it in camera, copy the files to it on a computer, then do the update. Never an issue.

Me too. I use a card that I don't use for storing images anymore. Right now, it's a 32GB Sandisk that was up to date when I got my M6, but is now too small and slow to be useful for my R7 and R6II, except for doing firmware updates. I always format it in the camera to be updated, then put it in a card reader and transfer the firmware file to its root directory (just drag it to the card image in the finder), then put it back in the camera (with no other card in the camera) to do the update. So far, I've never had a problem (including yesterday when I updated both my R7 and R6II).

Updated both my R7 and R8 with latest firmware wirelessly, using the Canon Connect app for Android --- quick and easy.

The R7 1.4.0 firmware fixes the issue where the R7 'forgets' the manual focus lens focal length you may have set in the IBIS menus --- now, if you have a manual lens, set its focal length other than 50mm in the IBIS system, and turn the camera off and on, IBIS will use the focal length you had set instead of defaulting to 50mm as it did before the 1.4.0 firmware. This is the only issue I've had with the R7, great to have it fixed!

Yeah, I have an old 16G SD card that's pretty useless for anything else. Never fails.

I updated my R6 II and no problems. I use Always the same sd card for firmware updates.

Did you select [OK] and hit SET?
there was no way to select OK - the screen was locked on the Cancel option
You have to use the dial. The touch screen is disabled for the firmware update.

Any 292.5MP pixel shift for the R7?

Thanks, good find. Can anyone with an R7 confirm whether the shutter shock fix from 1.3 persists in 1.4? Should be that, when using EFCS on H+ speed, you get less than 15fps on a burst below 1/500 shutter speed. E.g. about 11fps at 1/100.

This can be checked by taking the burst and then seeing how many shots occurred within a single second recorded via timestamp.

The reason I ask is I'd like to upgrade firmware, but don't want to lose this very useful fix.
I just did a test on my R7 with updated firmware, using EFCS on H+ speed. Here are the results: 1/125--11 fps; 1/200--11 fps; 1/500--12.5fps; 1/1000--15 fps. So it looks like the shutter shock fix is kept for 1.4. I agree that this is useful, though I rarely use EFCS, and am usually at 1/1000 or faster when I do. It's nice to know that shutter shock isn't an issue at all with EFCS.

Canon's instructions for firmware updates via SD card explicitly say that the card should be formatted ("initialized") in camera before loading the firmware file onto it. I always find this tedious but now it's clear that it makes sense (if one wants to be on the safe side).
This may lead to annoyance, but should really not cause a safety concern. Irrespective of how the firmware is delivered, it should be verified before being actually applied - which minimizes the chance of a bad application, and should also decouple the actual install from transfer media. It world be even more reliable if the camera has an in-built secondary buffer for recovery. Worst I would expect is it not working as the previous poster encountered, and then try again after fixing the underlying cause

In reality, an implementation can be as bad as Murphy says. So, while I have never had such fortune, has anyone had a bricked camera during firmware updates in recent times?

I have just been on the Canon UK site looking for upgraded firmware for my R6 Mk2. There is 1.3.0 for Windows dated 17 November, but only 1.2.0 dated 8 September for Mac. What is going on?

What is the latest firmware for the R6 Mk2? And why is it different depending on your operating system?
Have you tried connecting via the Canon Connect App on a phone? It has the latest updates for your camera.

I always update via wi-fi with Canon's free EOS Utility on my PC. Simply download the latest FIR file, make a connection between camera and PC and follow the instructions. Never failed on me.

When I try to download, this is what I get.

What is a lut and where is the update?

Hi DuckShot

Is this from an EOS utility on your computer? Or is it downloaded from a website.

The website download has a file while needs to be placed into a memory card and inserted in the camera.

We use the Canon Camera Connect App via a phone. Here you can see it's connected and if an update was available it would bring up a window asking me if I wished to continue. If one continues then it's just a short wait until the camera is ready for use. It does need a memory card in the camera to do so..

You have to use the dial. The touch screen is disabled for the firmware update.
This doesn't work either. The OK button is grayed.
