I saw the announcemnet of the Sony A9 III. You will ask what does that have to do on the Ricoh forum. If you watch this video you will see the new the capability of the A9 III global shutter.

After watching this I could only think of what this would mean for a GR with Global Shutter, even a APSC sized one, a GR GS if you like.

A GR with no mechanical shutter opens some design improvements that can be applied. I suspect Ricoh could make the GR thinner than the GR III is now making it even more pocketable. The low light abilities and the other features of such a sensor take the GR a step up.

I know this sensor tech will take a while to filter through, and who knows if a small battery will power it, but I hope we see it one day.

I'm a great fan of global shutters but to be absolutely honest I'm not sure I see the amazing benefits when it comes to replacing a leaf shutter. We already get high speed sync, silent shutter and if I'm not mistaken, the physical dimensions of the leaf shutter are negligible when it comes to the size of the camera.

One day I'm sure all dedicated cameras will have a global shutter, assuming dedicated cameras survive. Just like many brands have gone mirrorless.

But at this point the high entry price would outweigh the benefits for me. I don't even have or use a flash with my GRIII, so high flash sync speeds mean nothing to me.

I think at this point more people would be interested in a monochrome version of the GR than one with a global shutter.
