Speculative, but I have my fingers crossed…

I'm thinking of a Beach Boys song...

Having said that, if there is an S1* successor, it will likely be something along those lines.

While I think it's realistic that Panasonic would make one successor for all S1 models, I don't think the specifications are realistic. It sounds to good to be true.

Please let this be true, recently traded in my s1r for the s5ii, its a really good camera with the CAF and detection but NOT on the same level with the image quality, the s1r is most definitely the best camera i have ever had, image quality and handling, and ive had most of them over my lifetime. I cannot wait until they bring out the new S1r and will place my order the moment it goes on pre order.

I’m very eager to see what the S1(R) replacement looks like. I jumped into the system with the S5 and I love most things about it, but find the grip a bit too small for my hands. Also the EVF is quite bad 😄.
Main reason I can’t bring myself to switch to the S5(ii). The S1 EVF is so so good!

The only reason I’ve not gotten an S1(R) is I’m waiting for that form factor with PDAF.

When the smaller L-mount body they’re talking about comes out, I’ll probably get that as well down the line as a daily carry and do away with the S5.

i have both the S5 and S1r. The difference in EVF is not a big deal for me. I prefer the reduced weight to the better evf.

The S5 II EVF should be (a lot) better than the S5, but I can imagine it stinging a bit coming from an S1.

Ive just gone from the s1r to the s5ii and i was worried about the evf but to be honest i havent found it to be an issue, its pretty good and i dont notice the difference now. The weight difference between the cameras isn't really noticeable as the lenses are the biggest issue regards to weight, have seriously thought about going to 4/3 but other factors rule this out and i am waiting on the replacement for the s1r

Me too!
Not me!

Keep the hi-res viewfinder and excellent viewfinder optics. Leave the weight saving loss of features to the 5 series bodies.

(Posted in the unlikely event that Panasonic is reading this for clues as to what to include or abandon).

Exactly. I'd be getting the exact same IQ with a worse EVF. With the S5, all you got in turn was less size/weight. At least the S5ii brings better AF.

But I can happily wait for the S1ii now :)

It's probably fine for the S5ii. The S5 was really a huge step down and I had an EM1iii for a while and it was atrocious to look through that 2MP EVF vs S1. So I am a bit traumatised :)

I also find it interesting that the OM-1 EVF to my eyes is noticeably worse than the S1 despite having, on paper, the same specs. Not sure why.

Agreed!

I imagine I would be fine with the S5 II as well, but I would rather experience the optics from at least the S1 in my next camera.

I also had an E-M1 III and I have an S5 now. Weirdly I liked the E-M1 III EVF better than the S5.

Curious to hear the OM-1 is worse than the S1. I would not have expected that with those specs!

Using the terminology of the M4/3 system it could be the SX1 and not S1X.

Basically the S1/R is far too good to need updating so soon in its use-cycle.

But a RF-Style S1 would be relished (aka "SX1"). The GX9 is no longer produced and there seem to be a lot of GX8 users looking for an update. This is despite the GX8 not being a success on the market.

But if Panasonic was going to repeat the analogy of the G9II/S5II camera body pairing then the former GX8 camera body type might be a good jumping off point for an L-Mount RF-Style body known as the SX1 paired with a complementary body for M4/3.

Just make it a tilt lcd for a RF-Style body. I don't think side hinged lcd bodies work well on RF-Style bodies. Double hinged tilt like the S1/R is ok.

As Sony yesterday released the A9III with global shutter, a technology that was basically wishful thinking for many for years and most people don't think it would make it to a commercial camera in the foreseeable future, I thought if it's about time for an organic sensor as well?

Panasonic is leading in the development of organic sensors and has have prototypes for a couple of years now. In spring this year, there were some news about a significant breakthrough in organic sensor technology. Are they ready for series production? While say announce a S1X with organic sensor any time soon? Probably wishful thinking.

Bah humbug. While the S1R is an amazing & highly desirable camera, it's waaaay behind the competition in terms of wildlife/sports/action. Of course, for folks who don't care about that, the camera is essentially complete and the current prices are amazing. But a lot has happened in the market since the S1 & S1R were released. A substantial update is needed to remain competitive; simple fact.

By some! It would be great if we could all get what we want out of L-mount.

I don‘t think we can expect such a revolutionary step from Panasonic. The organic sensor is an exciting concept, but i‘m afraid it‘s not ready for the consumer market.
The a9III was build to impress, and it does. But I really struggle to believe that the real world benefits are worth 6000$.
For the 3500$, or whatever the new S1x will cost, I would be happy with a fast traditional sensor.

Agreed. I'm hoping panasonic targets the Z8 or A7RV vs an A9 or Z9.
