I'd be fine auto-upload to cloud as an option (although I don't love the idea of paying for another device to have a data plan), but physical media is still needed. Lots of us use our cameras outside of the areas covered by our (and sometimes any) data plan. Plus, no one is offering data plan speeds that can keep up with 10 fps raw bursts or 4K video.Cameras should be able to send images straight to the cloud for online viewing or processing. There is no technical reason why they can't. Phones manage to do this perfectly well without a thought from the user.
I agree. After all, even phones still store the images also to local storage and I don't think that's going away in them anytime soon, even if a separate memory card slot is getting less common these days. Local storage and cloud complement each other rather than directly compete, IMHO.I'd be fine auto-upload to cloud as an option (although I don't love the idea of paying for another device to have a data plan), but physical media is still needed.Cameras should be able to send images straight to the cloud for online viewing or processing. I never buy SD cards in a retail outlet but the thousands of them available suggests they are far from "dying out".Recently we have had the new Nikon ZF appear with a choice of SD or Micro SD cards, A lot of reviewers have noted this and said DS cards are easily available anywhere. While compact flash died out and you will probably never get a CF express card in a supermarket or gas station, how easy is it to obtain a SD card anywhere but the internet or camera shop, Lately in several national supermarket brands I can only obtain Micro SD, I can't recall seeing cards available in gas stations. The easiest cards to obtain are micro SD from Phone shops. Is the inclusion of a Micro SD card a trend we will see from many manufacturers due to the impending disappearance of SD sized cards, I live in England so I would be interesting to find out the recent availability of cards around the world in retail outlets.
My wife and I bought new Laptops in the last couple of years and both have SD card slots.Laptops used to have SD lots as a standard feature, now they mostly don't.
Did you notice I supplied links to all 3 of those along with all the others?Wal Mart, Target, Best Buy, etc carry SD cards
I don't want my images sent straight to the cloud for anything. I'll make that choice myself if and when I want it to happen.Cameras should be able to send images straight to the cloud for online viewing or processing.
Start with the technical reason that phones use a SIM card and a data plan unless they're Wi-Fi connected. There is no technical reason why they can't.
Without a thought from the user is exactly what's wrong. There's too little thinking going on out there as it is.Phones manage to do this perfectly well without a thought from the user.
You are joking, are you? This might be true, where you live, here it isn't. But at least we can have one data plan for multiple devices without additional costs...Unlimited data plans are common place now.
Mass data upload is not an issue with decent 4g and especially 5g.
Its going to happen. Where and when depends on the infrastructure.
My thread is based on several reviewers saying that having say one cfexpress card and one SD card is preferable to having 2 cfexpress cards in the camera body because you can easily get a new SD card anywhere in a emergency by just going into a shop or gas station and buying one off the shelf, If this option disappears and you the have to buy on the net as in your list above, the better choice is two cf express or indeed two micro SD cards, of course you can still use a adaptor for micro sd.I never buy SD cards in a retail outlet but the thousands of them available suggests they are far from "dying out".Recently we have had the new Nikon ZF appear with a choice of SD or Micro SD cards, A lot of reviewers have noted this and said DS cards are easily available anywhere. I find it hard to imagine a reasonable case for such an emergency: no card in camera, lack of capacity are both examples of insufficient preparation. Sudden failure to record [most unlikely] requires trouble shooting as it might well be the camera. Unlimited is often if not always limited to reasonable use. I doubt it will survive 100 raw's a day from a 61MB camUnlimited data plans are common place now.

Did you know your Amazon search included at least one CompactFlash card? ($169 for 256 GB). Your search does not prove that SD cards are here to stay in any quantity that would keep prices for them reasonable. I would advise those who bought cameras with SD slots (I own two) and hold onto them until they literally fall apart (I rarely do this) buy a couple of extra SD cards in anticipation of SD's death (I have a few backups). I wouldn't rely on service stations or Walmarts for a source of cards.I never buy SD cards in a retail outlet but the thousands of them available suggests they are far from "dying out".Recently we have had the new Nikon ZF appear with a choice of SD or Micro SD cards, A lot of reviewers have noted this and said DS cards are easily available anywhere. That's fine as long as it can be turned off. I don't want my photos sent to the cloud and one of the biggest problems with both smartphones and the P&S cameras that came before them was they make all the decisions without user intervention. Being old fashioned I prefer control over the process.Cameras should be able to send images straight to the cloud for online viewing or processing. There is no technical reason why they can't. My search proves that at present SD cards are widely available and show that at present there is no indication that SD cards are "dying out". The OP's contention was based on speculation alone.Did you know your Amazon search included at least one CompactFlash card? ($169 for 256 GB). But that worry is not an indication that SD cards are actually dying out. I would say the obvious and better solution to your hypothetical dilemma is to carry SD cards with you eliminating the necessity of buying one on the road.My thread is based on several reviewers saying that having say one cfexpress card and one SD card is preferable to having 2 cfexpress cards in the camera body because you can easily get a new SD card anywhere in a emergency by just going into a shop or gas station and buying one off the shelf, If this option disappears and you the have to buy on the net as in your list above, the better choice is two cf express or indeed two micro SD cards, of course you can still use a adaptor for micro sd.
