Sony RX100 VII Out-of-Stock?

I just looked at the grey importer from which I bought my M6. They have the M7 in stock, and available for £829, tax and delivery included. That's about $1060 USD. They delivered my M6 in a couple of days, so it was obviously already sitting in a local warehouse.

https://www.e-infin.com/uk/item/3991/cyber-shot_dsc-rx100_vii_digital_camera_mark_mk_7_rx100m7

It's £1049 ($1340USD) on Amazon UK, also in stock and including tax and next day delivery.
I looked at the Aussie e-infinity and it's AU$1579 about UK£812 tax paid and free delivery.

They always were Hong Kong based and in the past seemed to hold some of those Hong Kong sourced items in Australia. They offer 12 months warranty but it would be their own warranty business and not through Sony Australia. Currently they say delivery from Hong Kong.

"Australia - We expedite our orders from Hong Kong. The handling time for an order takes around 2-3 working days typically. You will receive your purchase usually on the 5th - 10th working day after your payment is credited to our account. Customers may be liable to import duties when the order arrives your country."

Over AU$1,000 import value normally alerts customs to extra charges but currently overseas online sellers into Australia have to collect the 10% tax and pay it to Australia, otherwise they simply can't do business here. E-infinity did drop out of Australia when that tax rule came in and resurfaced some time later.

Yes, they only offer their own, rather basic, warranty as a trade-off against their low price. Its only real purpose is to cover you against an obviously faulty item.

At the other extreme is Panamoz, which is renowned for its top quality service and superior three-year warranty (better than the manufacturer's). It is, of course, not as cheap, and doesn't currently have any RX100s in stock.

Currently they say delivery from Hong Kong.

Oh. I didn't understand that.

Dumb question - can you get someone here to buy one for you and just send it to you?

Greg
Not for me, I'm happy with RX100M6.

The initial cost would be higher than the Oz price plus loss of warranty causes concern for some.

BandH price US$1298 = about AU$1989 today. Plus any taxes to be paid. If importing goods more than AU$1000 then 10% GST plus other charges will be added when it gets here.

Here in Oz the Sony price is AU$1689 tax paid (=about US$1106 today) and as low as AU$1497.44 tax paid at https://www.ryda.com.au/sony-dsc-rx100-vii-cyber-shot-camera (=about US$981 today) priced at that for 22 more days it seems, but of course all Sydney shops are awaiting the next batch.

If buying within 60 days of an overseas trip then we can get the 10% tax refunded in full at the airport, so that brings the Sony price down to AU$1535.45 {about US$1007) and the Ryda price down to AU$1361.31 and that equals about US$892, so there's certainly no price incentive to buy from USA.
Thanks for the explanation, Guy! I've often wondered why people don't do that. Now, I understand.

Regards,

Greg

It's not 'even with high spec phones everywhere', it's 'because of high spec phones everywhere'. Most people who have high spec phones don't think they need a separate camera as well.

MY EMAIL TO SONY CUSTOMER SUPPORT THIS WEEK

I paid for my Sony RX100M7 in Australia on June 19; that is 51 days ago.

I am not looking to hold you to account with definite answers.

I do not want a refund. I have been longing for this fine camera.

When I have phoned, Sony consultants have bluntly reminded me that I cannot expect any information regarding a "Back Order" until the product is ready to ship to me from within Australia.

I have seen that the RX100M7 has been freely available for some time in Germany, Hong Kong and USA.

If I could obtain just a broad indication of when the next shipment will arrive in Australia, I would not feel an utter lack of respect from Sony. An indication of a period of approximately a month would give me a sense of relief.

I will be writing on review sites that paying money to Sony through "Back Order" is a complete gamble on time frame for receipt of product. All customer service rights may be unwittingly forfeited for months through Back Orders.

To me, Sony would be a reputable company if only customer service began to match the quality of its products.

Why is it that I've received email updates regarding the grip purchased with the camera, yet zero concerning the camera itself?

REPLY

Thank you for contacting Sony Customer Support. I was able to review the enquiry you have raised.

We sincerely apologize for the negative experience you have felt, when ordering this unit, however, please be advised that I have coordinated with our relevant teams namely our store and manufacturing teams and they are yet to provide a specified resupply date for the DSC-RX100M7.

Should you wish to receive product updates and availability, I would highly suggest that you may opt in and subscribe to our
newsletter from the Sony Store Website from the link provided below.

..........NOTE no mention of updates re grip ordered. Nothing but a rote reply.

......Re your post, Snapsh0t - I did mean because of high spec phones everywhere

In an idle moment I again checked my local shop, today saying 18th October they will be in. It just keeps slippin' away....

That's strange — I wonder why? I can understand a planned gap between production batches, but not constant slippages so near the scheduled date. I wonder if there's an unexpected delay in the availability of some key component?

I wonder if there's a shop just trying to keep its customers interested?

Maybe it's a case of the retailer has no idea and no word from Sony when the camera will arrive in stock, so they invent an ever changing forward date to make people think that they know something.

One day they may come and it will probably be earlier than whatever date they last indicated, so that may appease some. Pity those planning a trip and sweating on its arrival.

Yes, that sounds likely.

Indeed!

I wonder how long this thread is being continued!? 🙃

Well, it will probably continue until the RX100M7 finally appears in Sydney, or hits 150, whichever comes first.

I see Amazon UK has nine M7s and one M5A in stock. I think the M5A is from a Marketplace seller.

A few days ago LCE was the only main UK stockist that had any but there must have been a delivery as WEX and most others on Camerapricebuster now have stock.

Same here, both models are available and currently on sale in Germany!

So it seems that anybody in Australia who wants an M7 is simply out of luck. The stores here are all on backorder with one store giving that ever extending availability date.

The M5A is long gone and dead as far as Australia is concerned.

Apart from your quest about availability, may be there is simply not enough real demand in Down-Under fill up stock again?

It certainly looks like Sony ANZ didn't order enough. So Aussies might have to switch to grey imports.

I think the problem with the Australian market is isolation and a low population. The camera market must be small compared to most of the rest of the world.
