Z180-600 Ship Date - B&H

For landscapes in particular, I want a Hasselblad x2d. All I need to do is keep my wife from finding out about it.

I've got a 100-400 and will have the 180-600 plus 2x for bird, and just lower my standards by 5%..

If only I could find a z-mount to Hasselblad X adapter, and some black gaffer tape to cover the table, and rob a couple of liquor stores.

Let's see: One has a huge range for a zoom, [3x+], starts out at f/5.6, and gets very respectable reviews for a long zoom, and costs $1700

The other costs $3200, a single range prime, f/4.5, and has fantastic reviews.

The fact that the latter is available in stores has nothing to do with the huge number of people who can easily afford the former, don't need to take tack sharp images of humming birds at 6 meters, and want a zoom that fills out the 4th spot on the holy trinity, means there are a whole boatload of people who will jump at it.

When I put my order in for the 180-600mm, I sold my 500PF. I doubt I will miss it, especially in return for the range.

The lens is now shipping.

my dealer got one and I will get my copy tomorrow with mail 🙂

A number of people on the Facebook group have indicated that they have just been charged for the lens and starting to get delivery dates (Thursday or Friday) for their lenses. Appears to be mostly in Europe.
Some stores reported that they have already received the 180-600, but Nikon do not allow them to distribute them to customers until August 31 (2023), i.e. Thursday.
Stores in Europe, or the US?
I also read that on Facebook, and I think they were talking about a store in Australia; can’t remember exactly. But apparently B&H is also getting their allotment on Thursday. I wouldn’t take what people post on Facebook as gospel, or for that matter whatever is posted here. However it looks like first delivery is imminent.
Yeah, I'm not going to trust anything until I see stores stock them (or at least, get them to sell them all immediately). My local store hasn't heard anything yet. Might tomorrow, apparently, but we'll see.
I once read a story that a young man waiting to receive his inheritance at his late father’s lawyer office. The assistant told him that there was some delay so that it would be another 15 minutes. The young man replied that he had already been waiting for the money for 10 years; another 15 minutes was nothing. 😀 So after waiting for 4 years ….

I know it is easy for me to say that, since I am not getting the 180-600 myself, at least not now.
My frustration is that it's a prosumer lens. This isn't a 10k prime. This was an easy home run for nikon. I know of 2 people that went to Sony (granted, they weren't heavy into nikon) for the 200-600 as part of the wildlife kit.

I was tempted to buy the lens (and adapt it), but held off and held off.
As I have posted a few times, it wasn't like Nikon was merely sitting on their hands during the (almost) four years since the 200-600 first appeared on the lens roadmap in October 2019. For one thing most of those four years were in the middle of a global pandemic so that there were all sorts of manufacturing challenges. Manwhile, Nikon also introduced four higher-end super teles in 2022 alone. People can check out Thom Hogan's timeline: https://www.zsystemuser.com/nikon-z-system-news-and/the-z-timeline.html

The Z9, Z8 and the 400mm TC, 600mm TC and 800mm PF @ $6500 are attracting a number of pros and high-end users into the Z system. It is very clear that Nikon is sacrificing the consumer end for the high-end, which is a strategy Nikon themselves openly pointed out. At least IMO, the lack of a Z6iii is a much bigger miss than the long delay for the 180-600, which I think has much narrower appeal. (I know a bunch of people disagree with me on that, and that is fine.)
Agree 100%.

By far Nikon's biggest mistake was putting this on the road map. A road map other manufacturers never publish. Judging the way people are reacting to this, Nikon would be well served to never publish a road map again.
Or...

Not put a Z lens on roadmap 3-years and 9-months prior to announcement of lens; and adding other Z lens in meantime and getting those added Z lens announced, released, shipped, and finally in customer hands.

Whether it is true or not, it very much appears Nikon put Z 200-600mm f/nothing lens on roadmap as "bait", knowing lens would not be announced, released, shipped, hands for Years. Perhaps explaining why lens became a Z 180-600mm.

Or...

Have put Z 200-600mm f/nothing lens in customers hands within one year of it appearing on Z lens roadmap.
Every silver lining has a cloud.

A lot of people did essentially the opposite of what you did, including me. I first got the 200-500 in 2015, used it for a few years and got the 500 PF, which is more than twice as expensive but much lighter with better AF. Most of us realized that we used the 200-500 @ 500mm, some even at 95+% of the time. If we need 200mm, 300mm, there are much cheaper and lighter alternatives.

Both the 500 PF and Z 400/4.5 are $3000+ lenses. The 400/4.5 is a bit cheaper and in fact I bought mine just below $3000 when Nikon had a rebate. However, the more expensive 500 PF had serious shortage due to the supply bottleneck of the PF element. Neither the 400/4.5 nor the $1400 200-500 had any serious shortage because they have no components that would restrict Nikon from making a lot of them very quickly. Therefore I don’t expect any serious shortage for the 180-600 past the first couple of months.

Anybody got a shipping notice for their Z 180-600mm lens?

From shipping notice what is ETA to "In your hands"?

Odds are the new lens will be a lot more popular than the z8 was. The product works very well, and the price cannot be beat.
I doubt that is the case. There will be demand for the 180-600, but such long a lens is a niche product. And IMO the 180-600 will not be that useful without the AF from the Z9 or Z8 behind it. If more people own the 180-600 than the Z8, are they all Z9 owners?
I don't know if it will outsell the Z8 or not, though I wouldn't be surprised if it did. As the lighter, longer and better designed mirrorless replacement for the widely-owned 200-500, I expect it to be VERY popular. If post-release user and professional reviews confirm the pre-production reviews we've seen so far, this should be a great relatively low-cost, entry level lens for bird/wildlife and casual sports photographers that will compete with similar focal length zooms from Sony, Sigma and Tamron. I don't see any reason its use needs to be restricted to the Z8 and Z9. And it would pair exceedingly well with a mirrorless D500, if Nikon ever decides to release an action-oriented DX body. The 200-500 has sold about 240K copies, indicating that the focal range combined with low cost is very popular.

I own a Z9, 800 PF, 500 PF, 500 f/4E and 200-500, and I'm looking forward to getting a 180-600 to replace the 200-500. If IQ is sufficient, I anticipate using it at times on bird/nature walks in fields, gardens and woods, instead of a prime, due in part to it's significantly shorter MFD for shooting closeups and its zoom capability, in general. It won't be as good as a 100-400 for closeups, but the 600mm long end will be better for birds.

If the 180-600 is the Z replacement for the F 200-500, can the Z 500PF be far behind? Personally, I would love to have a Z 500f/5.6 PF S-series w/buiilt-in TC1.4x.

I preordered the 180-600 from B&H the day after release, and my order currently has a "begin shipping" date of September 30. I've seen some posts here and elsewhere mentioning Aug 17 but apparently B&H won't be shipping until the end of September.
Priority might be given to the highest level NPS members first (and/or Nikon ambassadors -- although my guess is any ambassador that wanted one, likely already has it).

I ordered mine on the first day and have had an email this evening from my (favourite) shop in the UK that they have mine in stock. Picking it up tomorrow morning.

Oh no - I've become one of those smug posters...:-)
Glad you "smug poster" are getting yours. :-P

No word from my Brick-n-Mortar store on status of Z 180-600mm. Then again, it is still 30th here.

Congrats. I'm hoping mine comes soon, but the odds aren't looking good here. Seems like some places got enough for a bunch of people, and some stores are getting 0 for a while.

I'm hoping B&H is able to send one out for me as they close tonight (if I'm getting one at all), so that the lens actually ships tomorrow -instead of having tomorrow as a wasted day at the warehouse. If it does ship out tomorrow late in the day, in all likelihood I wouldn't get it until September 5th because Labor Day. :-|

If the UK people are getting theirs shipped today, the 30th, I'm hoping we get the same treatment too.

Talked to my local camera shop, I'm number 12 on the list for the 5 stores in the Denver metro area, they are only getting 1 copy of the lens and that is designated to an NPS member. I might have a long wait.

First copies (several) delivered to my local UK retailer mid morning Wednesday 30th Aug :-)
