Canon R7 with Rokinon/Samyang EF lens w/AE chip not working

Has anyone used a Rokinon or Samyang EF lens with AE chip via a Canon EF to RF adapter?

I recently got my R7, and while I don't use my Rokinon 85mm f1.4 manual lens with built-in AE chip much, I thought I'd try it with my R7. It didn't work. The manual focus guide was great, and I can see the IBIS working very well, but when I pressed the shutter, the R7 froze, and I had to take the battery out to reset it. I turned it on, and it worked again, but I then noticed it didn't show my aperture (in Av mode). Switched to manual, and it only shows the ability to change the shutter speed.

Has anyone else tried a AE chip lens with a R camera?

A solution could be to put some tape on the AE chip contacts so that there is no more communication between the chip and the camera body.

Fred
Yes, that works (one of experiments tried in my post), but afraid the tape would drop into body as a solution if use it long term.

I've only been comfortable with tape on the lens side of a TC, where it can't fall anywhere but to the ground.

That's why I suggest something like the Haoge or Urth contact-less adapters for such things. If you put tape on the lens side of a normal adapter (one without a drop-in filter), then the tape can fall into the chamber.

John, Thank you for the suggestion

Hello there!

I have an EOS R10 and I just received the same lens today and had the same problem (i am using an adapter with a drop-in filter from meike). I also tried a small piece of washi tape over the contacts and that seemed to fix the problem. However, because I just ordered the lens and can still return it, I exchanged it for one without the AE chip. I reached out to rokinin support before finding this thread, i will update if they say anything useful

UPDATE:
I purchased and used the lens without the AE chip and it works perfectly. I am pretty pleased with the quality of the lens considering I got it for about $230

Just tried my Rokinon lenses on the R7 with RF/EF adapter, and not working with mechanical, first curtain or electronic shutters:
  • 14/2.8, AS IF - deploy shutter and the camera freezes, touch screen goes dark and the red light is on. Have to take out battery. All three shutter modes. P, AV, TV and M all attempted
  • 8/3.5 fisheye lens: shutter won't release.
Both lenses still work on 90D. I assume this is an RF thing. I'm considering an R6 II at some point. If they work on that mount, maybe I won't trade them in. I did try this a couple months ago, and the latest R7 firmware doesn't;t seem to have fixed this. Maybe just trade it all in for the R6 II and some other wide angle or fisheye lens. I don't use them that much that it is a deal breaker.

The 8mm lens doesn't have any contacts to tell the camera that there's a lens mounted. You need to go into the appropriate C.Fn menu (on the original EOS R it's C.Fn5:Others) to switch Release shutter w/o lens to ON. It's the same with every Canon mirrorless ILC body ever made, including the R6II.

Get a Sony, EF lenses work well with the EF-E adapter. (LOL)

These lenses should work on the original R6 (not the II). I stopped updating the firmware on my R6 (my Rokinon/Samyang lenses still work with it) because I think Canon is intentionally breaking the connection on the new models and so they probably will do it also in a next firmware release for the models that were compatible. I stopped at version 1.7.0.

I assume that you will have the same problem with a Canon EOS R6 II. I own that camera and the full manual Samyang XP14/2.4 - a well known astro photography lens - doesn't work on that camera neither (same problems as described above). Taking into account that the number of RF-lenses will stay small compared to the open Sony mount - and I need special lenses for astro photography - I'm considering changing the camera system. That's no easy decision (at least the old Canon EF lenses will work on a Sony camera), but if I cannot use my old & good lenses any more, Canon is forcing me to move.

BTW: There is rumor about a firmware update for the Canon EOS R6 II, so I will wait and check that first (but I have no big expectations).

Hi!

I don't understand how this 'taping the contacts' should work as the Samyang EF lenses have an electric aperture. How can I select the aperture if the electronic contacts are interrupted? Doesn't the lens will always use the maximum aperture if there is no electric contact?

Sorry, I just see that the Samyang MF lenses have an aperture ring. I have this problem with a Samyang XP lens which doesn't has an aperture ring. So 'taping the contacts' will not work ...

Got a K&F Concept M12194 Lens Adapter (no electrical contact) and now the lens works again. W/o electrical contact, the lens default to f2.8 and can not be stopped down. No problem for astrotography.

Thanks to those who have responded. I was able to get the 8/3.5 fisheye to work with permitting the camera to fire without a lens. The same setting did not work for the 14/2.8. I may try the contactless adapter, but it just seems like a bit much. Probably just sell the lens with all my EF stuff and get the R6 II. I have the RF 16/2.8, which should be close enough, I think, for my purposes.

Thanks, again.

The 14mm lens should work just fine on the contactless adapter now that you've switched Release shutter w/o lens on, and give you about 8° more field of view than your RF 16mm on your R7 while your APS-C sensor will crop out most of the nastiness of its moustache distortion. It's a better bet for starry landscapes, mainly because of the unmotorised manual focus. On the other hand, it's huge and heavy in comparison with a lens that's not much bigger than the mount adapter, it doesn't AF and will give the same EXIF data as the fisheye, i.e. no focal length or aperture information. In your position I'd sell it.
