Any Sony A6400 owners upgrading to A6700?

The subject detection and AF for birds is on another level - the a6400 doesn't have that. Not sure if there would be any difference for macro but for wildlife it seems to be on par or better than the best I have used and that includes A1, A9, Z9, R5.
It doesn't seem to suffer from the hit and miss focus problems the R7 has.
However the EFV is a big laggy when shooting fast action which makes it hard to keep the subject in the frame.
Definitely a big upgrade from the a6400 I think. Front and rear dials, better menu system, EVF seems brighter and faster so very nice to use until the shutter is pressed and then it becomes somewhat jumpy and laggy.
Just curious, do you have your evf refresh rate set to high or normal? With the olders a6x's, you could set it to 120Hz but the manual said the image quality degraded - there isn't that caveat in the a6700 manual. And is the lagginess only when shooting burst or in general?

thx

I own a Sony A6400 and I'm going to upgrade to a 6700. The upgraded video specs, UI and stabilisation being my major factors. Anyone else?
The subject detection and autofocus is very good, super fast, makes my A1 seem a little pedestrian.
The EVF is super nice until you press the shutter button - then it suffers lag and it becomes hard to keep anything moving in the frame. e-shutter is especially bad for some reason. Mechanical is usable.
Thanks for sharing duncang your feedback with images.

So the EVF suffers a lag when tracking the birds.....how about the images? Are the bird wings distorted?

José

Is lag there also when 120fps EVF is set?

I'll wait until duncang responds. However in my case in shooting tennis and volleyball, I don't think this will be a big issue. Birds are tougher because they are relatively smaller in the frame and also unpredictable.

I have it set to high. Lagginess only when shooting, otherwise it is very nice.

A few more reasons - these are original size. Very nice colours, sharp as a tack and the autofocus really struggles to miss. I am still trying to find one image in a sequence which is not tack sharp. I assume this is the performance one gets with the A7rv. Shame the EVF is a little challenging during shooting.

My initial impression is this blows the R7 out of the water in terms of actual in focus images.

I use mechanical shutter. You will get distortion with e-shutter.

When viewing and not shooting the EVF is very good, but when shooting the lag is a problem.

I think for tennis/volleyball it will be fine. The birds I am shooting are moving very fast and quite erratic. Relatively speaking a tennis/valleyball player is moving very slowly.

I have both an A7RV and the A6400. I've had my A6400 for several years now, and really enjoy it when I need a smaller body. After getting the A7RV though, I really missed its advanced AF features in the A6400. I always thought the A6400 would be perfect if Sony ever added those AF algorithms to it. They did, plus the A6700 uses the same batteries as my A7RV. So, for me, the A6700 looks like it will be the perfect upgrade to my good old A6400. I ordered it the first day pre-ordering opened up, and expect to have one in the next week or so.

Of course, I'll be shooting in jpeg until RAW support catches up with the camera's release. Everyone finally now supports my A7RV 's RAW files … let's see how long it takes the A6700 to catch up.

Those are amazing! I shot tennis last year with the A6600 and the 135/1.8 GM. When the player is closer the box is on the player's eye but when she was farther it didn't register the eye albeit the tracking focus was still spot on. It seems that in the A6700 even if the subject is far it still detects the subject's eye. Moreover the A6700's buffer is much bigger with almost endless shots in jpegs.

Phil Thach has the R7 plus the 100 500mm and he also placed a Preorder for the a6700 and just purchased the Sony 200 600mm. He also has a couple of Nikons and he placed a Preorder for the Nikon 180 600mm.

So he will be my main source for comparison on cropped cameras between Nikon, Sony, and Canon. By the way, I wonder if that Swallow made it. Seems it was the TARGET. Plus all the shots aren't TACK sharp. But they are good shots regardless.

Tack Sharp is becoming the most overused word in Photography. Fact is, most times it is just a Illusion of sharpness. Rarely are things actually, Tack Sharp.

Thanks.....please keep the pictures coming!!! Images are indeed tack sharp!!!

I saw one today on one of the FB groups using the A6700 and Sony 90mm macro. Amazing bee shot.

Tack sharp is relative, or what is the measure of tack sharp? It's subjective on real life photos. When I opened these full size on the 15" laptop the sharpness is better than I expected. The smaller screen on the phone is not helping to see how sharp the subject in a picture is.

Needless to say I can’t wait for August 3rd to get mine.

Are you shooting at HI+? (11 fps). The manual says that the EVF isn't real-time at HI+. A bummer to be sure.

If you have a7R5, wouldn't just use APS-C lenses on your a7R5 makes more sense over buy an a6700?

No. There is a significant difference in size and weight. When I travel I prefer carrying the smaller camera.

Those swallow images are impressive! Those birds make a nice test of an AF system, given how they dart around unpredictably at high speeds. I have a RX10 IV, which has a generally solid AF system... but it struggles to consistently achieve focus on swallows during their wild flights over water. Thanks for sharing these images.. They provide good evidence of the A6700's AF prowess.
