After reading Ken Rockwells piece about the D2h (latest update 2.11.03), I wondered if his concerns about the flash sync were justified?

Here's the article:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d2h.htm

He basically says the D2h is a step backwards regarding flash sync, since the D1xx range was able to have sync on all shutter speeds (not sure if this statement is false or not though, I expect not)..

Apart from the specifications, what about real life usage? Anyone tried this?

Well, I don't have a D2H (yet) but it was a concern for me when I first saw the spec. What if boils down to is if you're willing to buy another piece of hardware (SB800) then it'll be a major improvement, but if you're using older flashes then it'll be a hinderance. The D1/X/H can sync at just about any speed up to around 1/2000 without much light loss as long as you don't let the camera know that the flash is there. This means that you have to run off the PC connection or block off the TTL contacts on the hotshoe of your flash. While usefull in some cases, it's a less than ideal solution. The D2H combined with the SB800 should give me what I've wanted from Nikon for 3yrs now: true high speed TTL sync.

Peter, I'm not sure that you have to have the SB800 to get high speed sync with the flash. I own the SB-80DX, so I sent Nikon support an e-mail asking if it would high speed sync with the D2H. The e-mail response said that the information was only intended for the receiver (me) and could not be forwarded to anyone else. So, I'll just say that I liked the answer.

I'm sorry, but the D1x D1h D1, in ttl mode sync at 1/500 not more (also in Auto mode if it's attached to the hot sync), to sync at higher speed you have to conect with PC sync, in that case they sync at any speed even at 1/16.000 with obviously a great amount of power.

and by the way the article on
kenrockwell.com
contains several imprecise assertions

Hmm, an interesting development. It is a semi-moot point for me because I am still using "old" flashes (SB-28 and 28DX) so I would have to upgrade anyway, but others might be take advantage. We'll have to wait another few days until people start testing all of this out on their new D2s ;)

thanks jason!

the problem is : he has not used one.

I suspect he's just like other people here, curious about the real performance...
