Looking at both Steve Perry's and Thom Hogan's. Anyone have a recommendation on which is the better book?

I like that Steve's is more wildlife focus (that's what I photograph), but Thom's seems more in depth.

Anyone have both and can make a recommendation, or am I buying both lol

Thom Hogan's book is more like an extended guide on how to use this camera with explanations why and when. Steve Perry's book is about focusing. Both are very useful and do not substitute each other. Right now I am working on Thom's book. After I am done, I will buy Steve's.

I have both, and those are the only two Z9 book I have. Prior to the Z9, the last time I read Thom Hogan's books were back in 2008 or so in the D3 era. For DSLRs and Z6, I don't really need to read additional info.

Your description is accurate. Hogan is very thorough, probably too thorough. Perry is more wildlife focused.

Those e-books are not expensive compared to the Z9's price. Perhaps start with Perry's and if you need more in-depth information, also get Hogan's.

Perry's books are specific to particular uses (Z9 Wildlife) or functionality (e.g. Z Focusing System).

Thom's books are much more comprehensive and go through all of the cameras functions and interactions between settings. But he doesn't necessarily tell you how to configure things for specific subjects. He does provide everything you need to know to work things out and does provide some recommendations and tips. He covers every function in the camera.

I don't have a Z9 but I have Thom's Z5 and Z50 books and Steve Perry's Nikon MIrrorless Autofocus book.

Everything in Steve Perry's Autofocus book can be devined from Thom's book and his articles on Zsystemuser website but Steve provides more diagrams and examples, which some people might find useful.

I purchased Steve Perry's autofocus book after Thom Hogan's books and didn't find anything new in there, but I still find it useful for a refresher. I would be been more useful to me when I first got my Z5. I bought the book mostly to support Steve since he also does some great stuff accessible at no cost on his YouTube website.

I find the books from those two writers complimentary. If I had a Z9 I would purchase both. If I was only choosing one, it would by Thom's.

I would get Steve's guide to Z autofocus and Thom's full. manual. I have them both and they are great. Thom writes very detailed but long guides.

Steve does a great job giving advice on using the autofocus modes and such.

Both are great but if you want a no frills book by an experienced photographer see The Nikon Z9 guide for wildlife photographers by Warren Hatch Every thing distilled to what you need to know Read him then Steve then Thom

The consensus is you need both titles

They're many other books but the 2 titles above are most comprehensive and well written. Fyi the comments to this NR post, refer

Most expensive from Thom and Steve.
The website doesn’t write if the book is up to ver 3.01
Thom's book only for ver. 2.0.

I have Nikon D 850 and Z 9. Both are excellent cameras. I also bought Steve‘s five books including full frame and mirrorless in metering , focusing and settings. Great books. I plan to purchase Bogen Z9 book after he update Nikon firmware 4.0

The best books to start with are those free from Nikon from the down load centre — it surprises me that few bother to look at them.

And the various Digitutor information, and so on. Some of it is quite good.

But the Hogan (and maybe perry) books are better written and tend to explain "why" as well as "how".

Just noticed this older post. The current book version covers 3.01, and updates are free when I make them.
