GM-5 - Plan for 3 primes: 15 / 20 or 25 / 45

Thanks for the update! The 15 is terrific. Happy shooting!

Hello 👋

Update - 15mm f/1.7 on its way .. 25mm f/1.8 and 45mm f/1.8 found for cheap as new

Bought a 2nd GM5 too;) 😅

thank you all

Gaul
Congratulations!!! Nice all-black GM5. That will be a great 4 lens kit too.

Look out for the very small collapsible 35-100/4.0-5.6 too. If patient can be found as new without box for bargain price. Has excellent IQ and fits in any pocket, great companion to your lens kit.

Now give up the smoking :)

^^^ Agreed, - then you could probably afford a nice Panasonic 42.5/1.2 and/or Olympus 70/1.8 and your GM5 bodies will not only be small but will motor along the more supercharged fringes of its undoubted capability.

The Panasonic 35-100/2.8 might be larger but it is not a huge lens and gives an nth better performance which is much better that the average onlooker's perceptions. In other words it gives performance beyond its innocent looks and can go places where larger camera body kit might struggle to pass security or disapproving looks.

The 35-100mm f2.8 is a stellar lens. I picked one up a year or so ago and have grown to really like it.

I’ve been using it for travel in museums, cathedral and such. Using a long lens I found it great to dramatically reduce glare when taking shots of paintings!

Well done Jeff. I have also found the 35-100/2.8 a great lens on the GM5.

I went to a Devotchka concert last night at a venue that prohibits "professional cameras with removable lenses." I had a small Lowepro bag with the 42.5 f/1.7 on the bottom and the GM5 with 20 mounted at the top. Security asked to see what was in the bag, I opened it and said, "just a tiny camera," and she waved me through. It looks like a little toy! :-D

This is another concert in a huge auditorium where a little GM5 + 35-100/2.8 passed security. A production of the Wizard of Oz.

Some of these are new - others are new, but just to see what this combo can do:

This will give an indication of the sheer size of the auditorium the distance involved and the size of the cast

Yes the 15 is a must have.
I’m going to recommend the 14mm f/2.5 for anyone who owns a GM5. They can be purchased at a low price and the quality is high. But more importantly the size. It can hide the GM5 in the palm of your hand or slip in a pocket. Had great results on the street with that pair.

It also just happens to be a very similar specification to the Ricoh GR type (the darling of the street shooters) with collapsable fixed lens. Ricoh GRD/GR lenses have always been described as their FF sensor equivalent fov - which is 28mm (until recently the only equivalent fov offered since the original one so many years ago).

If there is a "must have" lens for GM cameras (besides the 12-32), it is the 14mm. The smallest and lightest AF lens in m43 ever made. And it has an absolutely incredibly good IQ for it's size, besides a fast and silent AF. It is what makes a GM camera truly pocketable in a small light summer shirt pocket. Can be found used at very reasonable price. Once you have that lens, you never will need a bodycap anymore.

It is not redundant if you already own the 15/1.7. The two complement each other. Obviously you never take both out the same day - they serve completely different purposes despite the near identical FL.

To give an idea, the 14/2.5 and the 20/1.7 together are only the size of the 15/1.7 with it's non-reversible lens shade attached, and only a measly 27g heavier. And the 15 is by no means a large lens.

Hello

For my newish 2nd hand GM-5, plan to get these 3 primes all 2nd hand:
  • Leica 15mm f/1.7 (for the aperture ring and apparently nice colours and contrast) .. (not the Olympus 17mm f/1.7 apparently not so sharp)
  • Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 or Olympus 25mm f/1.8 .. (not the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 too big)
  • Olympus 45mm f/1.8
Good choices?!?

Trying to find a balance IQ / Price while selecting only very smal lenses .. GM-5 obliges..

Thx

Gaul
GM-5 - Also have a 12-32 tiny zoom (all 2nd hand but like new)

Olympus 45mm advertised as « like new »

true that.. still with the blue plastic protection

One caveat: It's a lightweight lens with a relatively long body and frontward center of gravity, and it has no OIS, so it's incredibly difficult to use without support on an unstabilized body. You would be better served, IMO, by going with the Panasonic 30mm f2.8 macro, which does have OIS, and is a better size match for the GM5 in terms of holding stability.

(I did have the Oly 60mm macro, briefly, when it first came out, and I did not enjoy using it on the unstabilized (at the time) Panasonic bodies that I had. I currently have the Oly 30mm f 3.5 macro, which is also unstabilized, but which I do use frequently on the GM5, and is a better fit due to its compact size. I like it a lot, but I have to keep the shutter speed up due to the lack of OIS on it, ergo my recommendation for the Panasonic instead. )

The PL 45mm is a lovely macro. I've had a couple of copies of it over the years. Its flaws are that it's quite expensive vs the other options out there, and it has a bit of vignetting wide open. But its rendering is beautiful.

I use the 60mm a lot on my GM5. It handles perfectly on that body. A very light lens to carry with you. I found myself leaving the 45/1.8 at home in favor of the 60. It is IMO one of the best value lenses in the system (value = it's usefulness and IQ exceeds it's price by far).

The 45/1.8 has on the GM5 the advantage of having OIS. I am not sure though if / how much that would in practice help with macro. The 45 is a very old lens in the system, one of the first, released in 2009 (the very first m43 camera, the G1, was released just one year earlier). This means that you risk buying a 14 year old lens if you do not check the serial number for it's embedded manufacturing date. And used 45/1.8 are rare, hence quite expensive (IMO overpriced), you will find that a brand new 60/2.8 is cheaper when on sale than a potentially 14 year old used 45 on ebay. That said, if you can find one at a bargain price and you like the FL, why not (but you already have the 45/1.8....)

Not to add confusion, but 1 of the 2 lenses I kept is the Lumix 30mm f/2.8 macro. I found the stabilized 30mm to be extremely useful with consistent high quality images. It does not get much attention.
