Hi all,

Basically looking for a versatile zoom lens for my new S5, for portrait/fashion/editorial style. I am not a bokeh-chaser per se so the f/2.8 doesn't bother me so much - but I am curious to know if anyone uses this lens for portraits/fashion and if so, if they could please share some sample images?

I have the 50mm 1.8 Lumix which came with the camera, so in theory could buy the 35mm and 85mm for the 'holy trinity', but I quite like the option of a fast(ish) zoom for travel too.

Thanks!

I've recently purchased one and used it for theatre photography. Very happy - results are very good even wide open unless you are determined to pixel peep in the corners! It's a reasonable price and reasonable size, and handles well. For me, the considerable reduction in bulk compared to a 24-70 lens has been a compromise worth making, especially as my camera came with the kit 20-60.

Hi,

I was in a similar position as you. I rented the LUMIX 24-105 and was happy with the range and image quality it gaved me. But I found it uncomfortable to handhold it for longer than a few minutes.

My choice one week ago was the Sigma 16-28 + 28-70 and I have to say that I‘m very happy.

I tought I would miss the 24mm focal length but in reality it‘s not the case. There‘s also a firmware update with enables linear focussing. The image quality is very good. But I have to say that I don‘t am a pixel peeper.

From what I've read the optics are very good. If you don't need the better weather sealing or the 24mm at the wide end then it's a good choice, you could use another lens when you need to go wider.

I went with the Sigma 24-70mm instead as I want a fast one-lens all-rounder, the price difference is only around €200 and I don't mind the extra weight.

I've been using the 28-70 on my S5 for a year and the optics are spectacular. Next to the 18mm Fujifilm 1.4, it's the sharpest lens I have ever used.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is NOT weather-resistant like the Panasonic lenses and a few of the other Sigmas. The 28-70 has a gasket at the lens mount, that's it. It's comprehensive not like the others with o-rings at strategic spots, especially for a zoom. If that isn't an issue for you, it seems to fit what you are looking for :-)
