Like I said recently on the Sony Alpha Full Frame E-Mount Forum, I am thinking of buying an A7RV in the next couple of months and I am looking at lenses to get with it. Just wondering what 3rd party lenses people are using, mainly for photography (I don't do a lot of video)?

It is possible use almost any lens, except for example RF and Z-mount mount lenses.

Sony branded FE lenses do tend to focus better than third-party offerings. Some of the more recent features like Image Stabilization with Body–Lens Coordinated Control and Breathing Compensation are only available for Sony branded lenses.

I like my Sigma DN lenses, but they are missing some features like sealing, and their zooms rotate the opposite direction. Their 28-70mm is a nice kit zoom.

The native Tamrons lenses are cheaply made, but they have full sealing. Samyang has been improving with each new release. The native Yongnuo I have works much better than their EF primes.

I have a few of the Cosina manufactured manual electronic Voigtlander wide angle primes.

I like Sigma lenses the most, Tamron close second. Samyang have good reviews, just with little bit of quality variability based on user experience here on forum.

My kit is currently composed of way more 3rd party stuff than 1st party stuff and I'm pretty happy with all of it on my A7R IV. 1st party:

20/1.8 G, 24/2.8 G, 35/1.4 GM

3rd party:

Tamron 17-28 f2.8 & 50-400

Samyang 45/75/135 f1.8

Laowa 11/4.5 & 100/2.8 APO 2:1

TTArtisan 50/2

I like what Sigma does a ton, just haven't been sold on their options for E mount but still rather tempted by the 65/2 and/or 90/2.8 DN.

While a personal preference. I would say when you know what focal length you want, it can not hurt to visit a local camera store or buy from a store with a return policy.

I am suggesting to do your own test with a Sony branded and whatever 3rd party interests you.

My thought is you are buying a Sony R body and it would be worth it to see what you think.

Thanks everyone for your replies, suggestions & links. At the moment I'm probably looking at getting three zooms - a standard, a wide & a tele zoom. Primes will have to wait unfortunately, until I recover from the initial financial shock of this purchase!

I've pretty much decided on the Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM II for my standard zoom. For a wider zoom I'm thinking the Sigma 16-28 F2.8 is looking pretty good. I doubt I'll ever need anything wider than 16mm. As far as tele goes I've got no idea. I'd like to get out to 400mm at least but unsure whether it's better to go for a superzoom (for want of a better term) or a shorter zoom & tele converter. The shorter zoom & tele converter has the advantage of being a bit more compact too I guess.

Sigma Contemporary (20/24/35/90) and Voigtländer (21/35APO), Canon (135f2 and 200f2.8) and Tamron (28-200)

I use mostly genuine, native Sony lenses. I also have three Voigtlander lenses as well. I am a firm believer in buying a camera body and then putting native lenses on it, made by the original manufacturer. It doesn't make sense to me to buy an expensive camera body and then slap cheap third-party lenses on it.

I see that you have used Nikon as well. In terms of noise, dynanic range and sharpness how does the Nikon Z7II and the A7R compare?

I wouldn't call Sigma's or Tamron's lenses cheap. They are less expensive, which is good, but perform as good as Sony lenses.

Sigma, Voigtlander, Zeiss, Tamron

When I started with Sony, I kept two lenses from my previous Canon system: 85mm f/1.8 and 70-200 f/4 L. They perform very nicely.

I guess that OP meant e-mount lenses, not adapted

Not necessarily, 3rd parties can't sell rear mounted TCs on E mount so your only or most appealing option in that regard would be the 70-200 f2.8 GM II which is not much smaller or lighter than a xx-400 but certainly has some advantages, for a price. The Tamron 70-180 f2.8 is great too but no TCs. For xx-400 there's the cheaper Sigma DN which isn't as well sealed and has weaker AF but looks optically fine, the Tamron 50-400, and the 100-400 GM which does take TCs.

I'm pretty happy with the Tamron 17-28 f2.8 & 50-400 myself, the fact that they share filter sizes with my Sony primes is a nice bonus. If you want a significantly smaller tele you could look at the Tamron 70-300 or 28-200, both are pretty popular and like half the weight of anything longer.

It has been years now since I've used Nikon, and I've never used the Z7II so I really can't make any comparison, nor am I interested in Nikon's offerings any more to even bother. My Sony A1, A7R IV (now traded) and A7R V all have excellent ability to resolve the outstanding Sony and Voigtlander lenses I put on them, and dynamic range is very good. The A1 is better with noise than the a7R IV was or the A7R V, but it really is not a significant issue in any case.

Not sure how you define cheap (just based on price, materials/feel, etc), but besides Voigtlander, I think Sigma is right up there. The Sigma 14-24/2.8 DG DN Art for example pretty much has sidelines my primes in that range (and I generally prefer primes). It's fantastic optically.

A person's preference is a person's preference, just sharing my experience.

Favorite and most used 3rd party lenses used on my a7iii,a7iv, and a7c, in order of most used.

Zooms:

Tamron 28-200mm

Sigma 28-70/2.8

Tamron 70-300mm

Tamron 20-40/2.8

Sigma 16-28/2.8

Tamron 70-180/2.8

Primes:

Voigtlander APO 50/2

Voigtlander 35/2

Samyang 50/1.4 ii

Zeiss Batis 85/1.8

Samyang 35/1.8

Samyang 24/1.8

Voigtlander 20/1.8

Very happy with Tamron 20-40, 35-150, 150-500 on an A-1.

Samyang f/1.8 primes (24, 35 & 75), Tamron Zooms (70-180, 70-300 & 28-200) and a Sigma (100-400).

Also Voigtländer (12mm) and Zeiss Loxia (21, 25 & 85).

All those lenses are very satisfying in their different ways.
