I will be going on a kingfisher shoot soon and part of the setup is to mount the camera and operate with a cable release.

I want to use Procapture SH2 but my OI Share App doesn't seem to support pro capture modes remotely. Unless I just can't see it.

Is there really such a thing as a cable release for the OM1? Though Amazon will sell you one from JJC they don't actually show one connected to an OM1 and I can't see where it would be connected to the camera.

There are very expensive wireless ones but again I don't know if they will operate in pro capture modes.

Anyone got a cable release for the OM1 that works? Does it work for pro capture?

Thanks.

You can use the Olympus brand remotes. The remote shutter port on the OM-1 takes a 2.5mm plug just like the E-M1 ii, E-M1 iii, E-M1X.

The wired cable RM-CB2 ($40) or bluetooth wireless RM-WR1 ($100), which also works as a wired remote.

With third party remotes, there are wired and wireless options, both use the 2.5mm remote shutter port. Any remote that works with the later E-M1 models will work with the OM1. And the OM1 will work with motion control systems designed for Timelapse using their cables with 3-way 2.5mm plugs.

I have used a variety of these. I do prefer the convenience of the RM-WR1 because I don't have to fiddle with the plugs, especially in the dark.

Hello,

I have the OM-1 and I use the Olympus cable release with my camera for low light shooting of night time things.

The remote connects to the OM-1 on an odd side compared to the older Olympus OM-D models. It connects on the upper right side of the camera body. Which is better for me as I use the RRS L-Bracket which covers the left side of the body.

I've got a cheap as chips JJC and it works fine.

Have a JJC that works with it and the E-M1 series, too. It was cheap. The connector isn't proprietary, just a standard jack (2.5mm I think, but it's not handy for me to measure).

Sometimes a cable release is better than fiddling with wireless.

Cheers,

Rick

I use a 2.5mm one that I bought years ago to use on my Canon 350D.

Thank you all for such prompt and accurate replies. The remote port is almost invisible, where it is and I just missed it.

Will be able to get something sorted in time.

You cant use phone? it has that remote shutter mode. i use it with birds.

OIShare on the phone will work for normal shots, but there are things that aren't available using OIShare. I don't use any of the Pro Capture variants, but I believe Pro Capture 2 (that the OP uses) is not available with the phone app.

While I've used the RM-CB2 and clones with the OM-1, I really prefer to use the RM-WR1 bluetooth release, since there are no wires to connect.

However, there are some minor things to consider with the RM-WR1:
  • It uses batteries for the bluetooth part. If you connect it up as a wired shutter release, I don't think you need batteries. In the past, I've thrown various wireless shutter releases in a drawer, and I found when I went to get the release later, some other gear had been sitting on the button and it had drained the battery. The WR-RM1 does have an off switch, but you have to remember to use it.
  • Like other things (such as OIShare), OM/Olympus devices use what I call a 'highlander' mode (i.e. from the Highlander movie, where there eventually can only be one immortal left). In other words, if you have multiple cameras that support the RM-WR1, you have to re-pair the device when you switch cameras.
  • While the E-m5 mark III, E-m1 mark III, and E-m1x also support bluetooth for OIShare, OM never has released patches to enable the RM-WR1 to connect to those cameras via bluetooth. You can use it as a wired shutter release.
  • You have to set the RM-WR1 differently if you want to start/stop video compared to stills. I normally have my cameras set up so that the shutter button starts/stops video when I'm in video mode, and I don't use the record button. With other shutter releases, I could use the shutter release without change for both video and stills, by just changing the mode dial on the camera.
I am glad when I plunked down my $$$ for the OM-1, I included the $100 for RM-WR1.

I also have the JJC one and I would add that its easy to hold at half-press, some I have tried are too twitchy.

Yes, it is a standard 2.5mm audio jack with 3 bands. If you want cheap, just buy a 2.5mm audio cable and slice it open, separating the 3 wires. One wire is the ground, and the other 2 wires are focus (i.e. 1/2 press of the shutter) and shoot (full press of the shutter). When you connect the focus wire to ground, it does the 1/2 press shutter action.

In some cameras, you have to connect both focus and shoot to ground to get the photo taken, in others you only have to connect just the shoot wire to ground.

But generally, it is better just to buy a 3rd party shutter release with the proper button.

In the past, I have made Arduino triggers using a 2.5mm jack and 2 optocouplers to focus and shoot the camera.

Also, in the original announcement, they didn't mention that the OM-1 was compatible with the RM-CB2 (i.e. the wired shutter release port), and they only mentioned the RM-WR1. When the manual came out and the camera was delivered, it was apparent that there was a wired shutter release port.

I discovered today that I need a five metre extension cable also, so I took your advice and got a shutter release you advised and an extension cable together from Amazon.

Thanks,

Actually, you can use the OI.Share app with ProCapture. I've done it.

Because ProCapture needs a half-shutter press followed by a full shutter press, you should use OI.Share in Remote Shutter mode, and you have to activate the "Half Way Release" functionality in the app. You go into Options->Remote Control->Remote Shutter to find the option.

Then when you're using the remote shutter mode of the app, press the "Half Way" button. You'll see the camera start buffering. When you press and hold the shutter button in the app, the buffer will write and the camera will start writing the new frames while you hold the shutter button in the app, up to the frame count limiter you have set.

When you release the shutter button, the "Half Way" button will remain engaged, and the camera will return to buffering. You tap the Half Way button again to cancel it.

It's bluetooth so your mileage may vary when it comes to range, but you won't have to worry about your shutter release cable being pulled or tripped over and crashing your expensive camera to the ground.

Will thanks for your detailed explanation here. Though I have ordered a release and extension cable it will be good to know how to do it with the phone. Thanks for your explanation. I assume the camera is using the phones Wi-Fi for this no blue tooth?

Thanks Michael for your useful additional detail. I have bookmarked this thread for future reference. When I have forgotten all this 😀

Hey, thanks for this info about the RM-WR1. I have the older wired release but based on your post I just went to B&H and bought my own. Looking forward to wireless release. BTW... can you tell me how far away you can be from the camera to trigger the shutter? I us OIShare to take family portraits and be in the shot. But I've found that if I don't have FULL batteries in the camera / flash and phone it often looses connection after the 1st shot or two.

It will probably work. JJC makes good stuff.

If it doesn't work, just return it to Bezos.
