Crutchfield's Delivery Policy for Expensive Equipment

Have the majors like B&H …been requiring signatures for items like this? I haven't bought anything expensive in a while and never remember having to sign for anything.
B&H had been requiring signatures on my deliveries even down to about $100, although the FedEx drivers dropped that ball very often during Covid abundance if caution days.

I habitually have their deliveries redirected to the local FedEx office which does follow through on signatures.

The added benefit is that the deliveries arrive about 6 hours earlier; their company locations are serviced at a different priority on dedicated routes, an advantage on those “just before a trip” days.

If I'm getting delivery from United Parcel (UPS), expensive items such as a computer, need to be signed for. But if it's Amazon, they leave it at the door and take a picture, then send it you in an email telling you it's been delivered. Does Crutchfield confirm follow up and inform you delivery has been made?

Crutchfield has worked out for me whenever I used them. Nice, quick, and easy. To be honest I did not know they sold camera equipment, as I have only ever used them for audio equipment.

I am fortunate enough that I work a day job in a company that is okay with me shipping anything and everything here. FedEx in my area is horrid for anything residential, and UPS is better but can still have issues given that my home is not proximal to the nearest distribution site. Shipping to my employer has always been reliable for FedEx, UPS, and USPS. If you have that option I'd recommend it.

Odd that the signature wasn't required for something so expensive, but honestly the drivers in my area completely ignore the requirement anyway if I accidentally ship something to home rather than work. FedEx left a $400 computer monitor, in manufacturer advertising packaging in front of my doorstep without a signature. Didn't even knock. I have a doorbell camera, but I'm on a busier street. No clue how long it was out there for, because I only noticed it when I let my dog outside.

I guess Crutchfield may have shipped it as signature required, but the carrier ignored it?
If your item is shipped signature required, and the driver fails to do that, are they liable for porch theft at that point. What happens in the normal case of porch theft? Am I liable? The Sender? The shipper? This question for everybody.
This is where I think it gets sticky and is a gray area. On one hand, the seller only required a signature of some sort -- didn't necessarily specify signature of the buyer (although that's always assumed). On the other hand, the shipping company will probably list it as signature received and package delivered, although I'm going to think that the carrier may be most liable here because while there may be a signature, it's not the signature of the seller (which is almost always assumed).

Now if the driver DOESN'T get a signature, then it's quite clear that's on the carrier though. This is, again, why I personally have stopped doing home delivery on expensive goods and will either have them delivered to work (so I can sign for them myself) or do store pick up.
Yeah, I would definitely prefer signature required for $2500 items but I work from home now, so no more office shipments. I have had delivery guys just leave packages and not even ring the bell. It sits there for hours because I never heard them and I am amazed nothing has been stolen yet. I am on a reasonably busy neighborhood route and a white USPS box is like a red flag to drive-bys.
Luckily at work we have the same delivery person (as long as it's UPS or Fedex, which it usually is) so they know me and they come in and have me sign it personally when I have something delivered, but again, not very often.

Hello DP Reviewers,

I recently purchased a 70-200 Z lens from Crutchfield after reading a recommendation on Ken Rockwell's website. Although the shipping was prompt, I was taken aback by the fact that they did not require a signature upon delivery for an item worth $2,500. This has led me to question their professionalism and risk management skills.

Have any of you bought from Crutchfield before? If so, what was your experience with their delivery policies and overall service?

Looking forward to your insights.
Like SkyRunr I live in a safe (and rural) area. Many times I’ve ordered items that say they will require signature, but in most cases the driver either just leaves the package or simply hands it to me.

I guess what I’m saying is that while it’s strange that Crutchfield is not requiring a signature, my experience is that doing so is more an aspiration than a reality.
Have the majors like B&H, Adorama, Amazon etc been requiring signatures for items like this? I haven't bought anything expensive in a while and never remember having to sign for anything.
BH requires a signature for the expensive stuff. My Z9 was signature.

I got a box at a local UPS store, which eliminates most shipping problems.

But then you have to have your fed x or ups store approved as a Drop ship adress to the store. That can take some time. Some give a hard time if it's not the mailing address of the credit card. They think it's fraud.
I have run into this before. ESP when it's an expensive item

Some delivery companies stopped doing signatures at the beginning of COVID. Perhaps that turned into a permanent policy.

No, it's not that complicated. I do this with nearly every item that I order from B&H. The process is: Purchase your item from B&H with shipping to your home address. B&H always uses FedEx for shipments to my area. As soon I get the "shipment confirmation" email from B&H, I follow the "track package" link to the FedEx website, select the manage delivery options, and then redirect the delivery to a FedEx OnSite location of my choosing. I have mine sent to a Walgreens about 2 miles from my house.

I can do a similar thing with UPS, but I had to sign up to be a UPS My Choice member (~$20/year I think).

I too have have a box at a local UPS store. Have for more than 20 years.

Aside from the fact that this avoids porch pirates, the store can help with some shipping problems. Over that period of time I have had a half dozen expensive packages go missing. Missing in the sense that that were indicated as delivered by the shipping service, but the UPS store had no indication that they were received. UPS store helped show that the packages were not delivered to the store (they may have been delivered somewhere else or stolen - I never knew) and the vendors shipped replacements.

For a couple of my credit cards I use the my UPS Store box as the mailing address, which avoids any issues with differences between billing and shipping addresses.

Specific to Crutchfield; I have purchased many home and auto audio components from Crutchfield since the early 1980's and never had an issue, regardless of where I lived.

Understood. That can cause issues too when you redirect. Sometimes they don't. . My point is BH won't do a drop ship delivery address that easy. Luckily your Walgreens is good. The one by my house loses or has issues from time to time with FedEx packages. I wouldn't be sending a $5k plus camera there.

sometimes there is dishonest employees that steal at those stores , I had it happen years ago. They told me they didn't get it. Tracking shows my store got it. Had to call the police, then suddenly when police showed up they found my package real quick. I avoid porch pirates by being home and waiting in person for expensive equipment deliveries

I'm going to chime in here and say that yes this can create issues. Sometimes they have to get authorization from the sender (in this case B&H) and then B&H has to call you to verify in some cases (or the sendor just has to contact you). I did this once from Unique Photo because I didn't want them to leave new rolls of film on my doorstep in 90 degree weather. But it became a hassle to a point where it got returned to them even though I went online and asked to have it redirected to my work address. Basically had to re-order again from them, so be careful. It may work for one person, but be a nightmare for someone else. It all depends on who you deal with and how quickly they respond.

I would say if at all possible, have it delivered to work, or to a neighbor if you cannot have it delivered to your house and it requires a signature. Place of work might be better so you can sign for it as some places need a signature from the person who ordered it, while others just need a signature.

I ordered a Sigma 150-600 from B&H last year. Realized the ship to address in my account defaulted to an office that we closed during Covid. I called Fed Ex to get it re-routed, No can do they say, call the shipper. So I called B&H. The guy was kinda gruff and very NY, but said he would try, no guarantees.

I called fed ex back and they said that we could re-route to a Walgreens now, but the only one they would recommend was one in the town where my old office was, even though the shipping center is three miles from my house. The call center was in India and I ended up hanging up in frustration. I just figured I wouldn't see the lens.

It was on my front step three hours later.

My 100-400 arrived today from Amazon. The driver required a signature. The lens was in an outer box. So I’m happy this time.

BUT the big question was did you have to sign for it? That's what I think the real issue was with the OP. Sure, delivery companies will leave packages, as i had mentioned, although if a signature is required, they're supposed to obtain one. So the fact you got it three hours later is great, but did they follow the requirements? What if your lens didn't show up?

I had a similar experience as yours with Verizon Wireless when I needed a replacement phone since I was leaving for vacation within 2 days at the time. Normally it would have been 2-3 days, but they expedited it and said up to 24 hours. Was delivered 4 hours after making the claim, and luckily was home, as they would not have left it if I had not been because it was through one of their carrier services (not your typical Fedex or UPS or whatever).

I posted my experience to illustrate the odyssey of redirecting Fed Ex packages. I would never employ a game plan where that was part of the equation.

I did not have to sign for it.

A couple of years ago, I ordered a pre-owned Omega Moon Watch, which isn't quite as expensive as a Z9, but not cheap. Being "smart," i had it FedEx'd to my house. So I live at 18 E 25th St. I waited all day for the truck, and at 7:45pm the tracking status changed from "Will be delivered by 8pm" to "Return to Depot." When I called Fedex, they said that the driver couldn't get past my locked gate. I have no locked gate. As near as I can figure, the guy went to WEST 25th Street, a block over from me. So I asked that it be delivered to the local Fedex Office nearby. Day 2, they tried to deliver it o my house again. Why? Because address changes apparently take 24 hours to "activate." The guy stopped by less than 5 minutes after I got back from lunch. On day 3, I got my watch at the Fedex Office.

And, the reason I didn't have it delivered to my PO box, was that my box at that time was 30 min away, and I was impatient. :)

UPS just left an expensive lens on my porch w/o my Signature :-|

Adorama said a Signature was Required; the UPS tracking page affirmed that the package Required a Signature.

The UPS driver left it on my porch w/o any Signature.

So much for policy; in the New World Order "everyone does whatever they want"

Well, as i had mentioned in another post, maybe the driver did put a "signature" but it wasn't yours (ie. it was a his or some scribbles). I'm surprised some places don't require a digital signature (like Amazon) where you have to sign off on your smart device some how (either log into your account and confirm you receive the order or something) instead of the pad the driver uses for the delivery company.
