Best DSLR made by Nikon

Of all the DSLR's made by Nikon, which camera would be ranked by you as the best and why?
Oh come on - that's easy! The D850, for all the usual reasons.

lol. Lets see who will differ with this answer. :-)
I will be happy to muddy the waters a little. First to say that I have a D850 and use it with the grip and also without. It is a gloriously brilliant camera and it will never be sold by me. It is my main sports shooting back up with a D500 sitting in 3rd for sport.

But when I am out shooting sport the Best DSLR made by Nikon is my D6. That's fairly simple and a no contest. Truly spectacular, stunning autofocus, fantastic files and amazing build etc. etc. For that use case it wins by a mile. Again it will never be sold and will certainly never be replaced by a Z9.

Well I think the D3 was seismic and probably even more significant for Nikon than the D850 - the latter being obviously the better camera technically as of today.

The Nikon Df. It didn't follow the rules and there was never one like it before or after. Made in Japan. Can accept non-AI lenses. Sensor from the much more expensive Nikon D4. Images look gorgeous. Camera body itself looks gorgeous. A real pleasure to use (except for the, ahem, front dial). I'd love to have another one some day but I am selling off most all of my F lenses so it wouldn't make any sense to buy one again.

I'll never sell my Df's or my F-mount lens collection. They're coming with me to the grave.

Be warned--if I am NOT buried with my Df's I WILL rise from my coffin to find them!!

My sentiments exactly. I am now having huge fun picking up old Nikon lenses to play with on the Df. I only pay stupidly cheap prices.

I tick them off in the Moose Peterson, Nikon Systems Handbook.

The D850. The pinnacle of DSLR technology. They'll have to pry mine from my cold dead hands.

D850 without a doubt. AF that is responsive enough to handle about anything, image quality that is state of the art, and great ergonomics. The best camera Nikon has made since I've started using them in 1977. Without question actually.

Indeed.

It's hard to say "best" without knowing the criteria. I think overall the D850 should be called "best" but some people would probably say D6.

I have a D810, I would like to buy a D850 if their prices drop to within my budget but I don't think that is going to happen very fast since there probably won't be a new model to replace it.

Speaking of spectacular files, D850 at lower ISO blows away the D6. Portraits, landscapes at ISO64 to 200 range. Way more resolution for cropping or large prints in sports shots if you don't have the longest lens. D6 should been called the D5S. Wasn't enough improvement, a shame. I would have considered one if they had bumped up the resolution and worked on the lower ISO image quality. Z9 is the real flagship now and less $$.

DF was awesome except the handicapped autofocus module they gave it. Same one from the entry level D600. Not good for fast action or sports. Great image quality, but D850 destroys it for sports autofocus.

The D850 wins but the D4, D700 and D500 were absolutely brilliant cameras and the D810 files were jaw dropping

The Df and the D850 are not competing products. They have different purposes. I didn’t buy a pair of Df’s at full price so I could shoot action and sports with them. I bought them to make use of my giant collection of manual focus and pre ai glass. It does an OUTSTANDING job with those old lenses while being very small and light.

I can’t even mount half my lenses on a D850! Plus, I prefer low-light performance over resolution.

I sometimes use autofocus lenses and they work great too. I wish people would stop comparing the Df to the main lineup of cameras. It was a special edition thing, and the people it was made for LOVE IT.

I agree, one of the best parts of being a photographer is finding YOUR Excalibur!

I think it’s important to find that special camera that you connect with—the one that makes you want to go out and shoot more photos!

So, really there’s no such thing as one camera that is the absolute best for every person in every situation! Maybe your personal “best camera” is a Nikon F4 or a Polaroid SLR670 or even a D100 with a 35mm f/1.8 mounted on it.

If THAT camera gets you the kind of images you dream of making—that’s the best one!
