***DPReview Shutdown Thread -Nikon Z -Pt 2**

There is only one answer, Do not buy there anymore. OK for me not really a problem, because I never did

Otherwise, what can you expect from Amazon?

Man, I'm still so bummed about this. Forums and sites that are built with an educational and community-based mindset and exist for decades amassing nearly endless information for global artistic and entrepreneurial communities should be somehow designated as digital "heritage" sites and preserved in a similar way as physical sites and cultural landmarks. They don't necessarily need to remain "active", but keeping them accessible for informational purposes and future reference would be a great benefit at least on the level of a historic mansion or childhood home of a cultural figure, etc., if not moreso.

What a shame if two and a half decades of important information, community, and history permanently goes dark at the click of a button by a global corporation whose market cap currently sits at over a trillion dollars.

If a website like this is not self-supporting and profitable, why would any company want to own and manage it? If it is profitable, someone else will want it and it will survive.

I remember chatting with Phil in the forums. Richard. So many names who are gone now. Ronnie Gault, Shay and lots more. Their memories are still here. That's the hard part. They are throwing away the history and memories. Of so many people. And so many years.

I am grateful that we had it and bitter that we can't keep it.

I think I have bought my last gear from Amazon. They will always be the company who buried DPR. At least to me.

And please Check-in ! ...There is a specific thread on each of them

We will count how many of us have landed and where.
That means it's easier to find back a member in the future

> The Check-In threads will keep the tally And also the Names

( remember to mention your DPR name while checking in!!)

There wasn't much "where do we go next" options in the previous thread.

Nikonians (pay) and Reddit (not great for photos) were mentioned, but I also suggested Flickr.

There are multiple Z groups, but i'll throw this one out as the current (seemingly) leader for Z discussion

https://www.flickr.com/groups/3156733@N20/
There are options out there, it will be interesting to see which one 'sticks.' I know FM is popular, though paid, as is Nikonians. nikoncommunity.com is one that is just getting started but may yet take hold, and is not paid.
FM is free to use and post, etc. But you do need membership for other options (like listing on buy/sell forum.)

I will surely also miss DPR. :-(

It has been my daily go-to photography site. It is here I have posted most of my lens tests etc.

One of the unique things which has been valuable to me (and surely many others) is the camera test studio scene, where we easily can compare resolution, high ISO noise etc. between several cameras. I haven't seen anything like that anywhere else. Just loosing that resource is truly a loss for the photography community.
Are you familiar with the 'Compare Images' feature on Imaging Resource?
It has been a great help to me over the years:

Now that I see the test scene, I do in fact remember seeing these before, but I obviously didn't see their side-by-side comparison page. They even offer RAW files for download (after clicking around a bit, I finally found them).

I will continue to rely on Nikonians for Nikon discussion and advice. Sad to see DPReview fold.

I'm pretty good with cameras and tech overall.

BUT....

There are times, and have been times and will be times when I run into a problem that I can't quite work out. It could a battery door that popped off or a focus mode that seems to have vanished.

And DPreview was always a helpful resource, even if things sometimes got contentious, the good outweighed the bad by a huge margin. And no other site covered the bases like this one.

On top of that I often saw amazing photos here and shooters willing to discuss how they were made. It was an amazing resource on that front as well.

It really is a small tragedy to let this site die away.

Yeah we do! I'll have to look in on your site and see what you're up to.

I've been here for about 18 years and a lot of the original posters and reviewers have passed on. I've learned so much about equipment and how to tease out the best from whichever camera you are using.

I don't think I'll even have a new Nikon Z before "our" forums get the axe. I'm just so bummed about this announcement. In the past, I've tried many other forums, but finding DPR was such a great help to me over the years. Experiencing the stages of grief now: denial-anger-bargaining-depression-acceptance. Just don't know if I'll ever make it to acceptance. But, like the rest of the great folks here, guess I'll try to figure a way to feed my appetite for knowledge about photography equipment and techniques. It just won't be the same. :-(

In order to prevent a dozen similar threads, this thread will act as the thread to discuss DPR closing its doors in the context of the Nikon Z system. Other threads will be locked. General thoughts also welcome, but hopefully community members can discuss other forum options moving forward.
Amazon...rather than shut it down, tell us how much per month to keep it up and see how many sign up before April 10th. Maybe this is a money maker for you, Just a thought:)

Recently the cost to run DPR was estimated at about $3 to $3.5M per year. So about $250-300K per month. At about 4M page views/year, that's 1 to 1.3 cents per view. Assume that 25% of visitors are regulars and would pay for access. For dedicated users, that's about 40-55 cents per day assuming 10 pages viewed per visit (the average is closer to 3). Double that to give AMZ a good profit margin.
Is DPR worth a $15-17/month subscription per year to you? Remember how outraged users were at Adobe's $10/month for a LR/PS subscription.

I'm off in my math - it's about 0.75-0.85 cents / view - still around $20/month. But number of members appears to be a proprietary amount.

Interesting...that's what I was looking for, a number. It does seem that a subscription, additional Amazon sales, a little advertising could save the site. Someone smarter than me would have to figure that out. Maybe they already did and that is why they are shutting it down:(
