Following the thread on a possible successor to DPReview discussed in this thread:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4705507

Here is the news.

Three proposals have merged efforts.

The new site will be DPRevived.com, not as originally advertised PhotoForums.com.

There is an interim site https://cameradiscussion.createmybb4.com/index.php hosted by Alansh. This can be used for ongoing discussions. Registrations and posts will be migrated to the long-term site.

ComeHither has created a registration page for the new site. This will be available on DPRevived.com when the name servers sort themselves out. During that the email [email protected] won't be reachable, so pleas have patience.

I'll post again when it's back.

Also, we've been in toch with Soencer and Nasim at Photography Life. They are also proposing a solution, hopefully that will be included under a single banner.

This looks like it might work.
Trying to register, it keeps saying I'm giving a wrong answer to the security question. I tried "4" and "four", neither works.

What's the procedure, should i contact [email protected] directly?

Also, it's a great idea, thanks for doing that
No one else seems to have had the problem. But I've extended the answers so it will take all lower case, all upper case, Capital first letter or the number 4.

this is a favourite of mine

I use Dark Mode most of the time

I hate bright background pages, especially at night and in dim light.
I also hate reading forum threads in ‘flat’ view - already mentioned that one.

This is looking more and more interesting :-)

Bob

Many thanks.

Could you organise by mount rather than OEM? Maybe OEM was a conscious design choice?

Andrew

Hi all,

Some teething problems - the site DPRevived.com is running with the registration tool, and obviously some people can get to it but others can't. Please be patient.

Also, at present the DPRevived mailer can't send to gmail accounts - sorry to those of you waiting for replies.

Busy setting up DPReview forums on DPRevived development forum...

Keep up the good work. Teething problems are inevitable.

Waiting for DPRevived.com DNS to sort. The joy of internet infrastructure.

Great stuff.

I'm one of the ones who can't get to it :-) - server not found. DNS issue?
It can take at least 24 hours for a new/changed DNS entry to propogate round the Internet. DNS systems cache name translations, and refresh their caches sometimes only once or twice a day.

Thanks Simon. I did know that, but I was able to email Bob at his email address. So, it's more than just propogation, I think (but I could be wrong).

Bob,

if you could only open all equivalent forums like being listed on DPR, also similar design would being great.

best of luck !

Marc
That's the plan, but it will not be like that at the beginning. First thing is concentrating on how to let members migrate easily.
Exactly my idea. Other photography sites might not have all those different forums or be alive as those of dpr….but that that could change, once many members join. Maybe it’s possible to agree and decide on one or two websites.
Thnxs Bob; this looks like a very viable option!
This is a reply to everyone in the thread. I'm keenly aware of the unique features that makes these forums what they are - I want to replicate them. It will take some time - but the task now is to manage a transition before DPR closes - tuning the site itself takes longer. If I remain having anything to do with it, I'm determined that it will be a much more 'community' run site, where members have a direct say in how it runs, and there is no autocrat in charge - which is I think a problem with most of the alternatives - they depend on a single principal and those people inevitably shape what it looks like. One of the things I'm working on is a governance structure - which is probably more tricky than the technical stuff.
That indeed may well be the case. As much as I understand people want the continuity of finding their way around, we may have a smaller user base which would mean that some subforums would be mostly sleeping, making the whole forum look ... resting. So then it would have to be decided how to deal with that, or with legitimate questions for new subforums. For that you need procedures, I think that's what you mena by governance.

I'd love to have, *if* ever being possible - the same kind of DPR forum-esque colors, same browsing style, which does make a difference, to all other webforums, say PhpBB, or whatever board software is behind the website running...

DPR is just like a good, 'ol cafe, whereas one is meeting friends, having a tee or two, grab a piece of cake...to discuss about different topics, etc. :)

State of play this morning:

Seems like the registration page is working, so long as you answer the question!

I have a basic forum system up on my own machine, busy configuring it and will put it live in the next couple of days. I've tried to make it so it has the capacity for growth, which means it won't have to keep translating. It is based on the Django framework. Sites based on this include the White House, Instagram, Pinterest, National Geographic and many more - so I hope it will be robust and effective.

When the thing is up, what I'll ask supporters to do as quickly as possible is spread the word amongst DPR members as widely as we can, so that we can have an effective migration.
Thanks

I was able to register and create a thread: https://cameradiscussion.createmybb4.com/thread-37.html

I'm glad to see major efforts join forces. However, I hope this DPRevived forum can support posting full-size (original-size) photos just like DPReview Forums, which is a major feature people who discuss photography need to have (e.g. to evaluate IQ).

In the meanwhile, as some people mentioned, we may need something that replicates each of DPReview's forums to keep the community together. I have created a series of Facebook groups each corresponding to a DPReview forum, so that people can quickly associate themselves with one or more "DPReview forums" again, before a perfect DPRevived forum that can post full-size photos is born:

How do you guys think?

Some more news,

work on the new forum software has gone fast. should be available in a few days, duplicating the DPR forums - even the old ones that haven't been posted in for years. Still working on a way to help people migrate their content. The registration tool we were using was unfortunately slowing things down, so it's suspended - the same task will be done in the forum site proper.

If you want to migrate your content you should request a dump on the link that DPR provides: https://www.dpreview.com/data-download. At some time we will provide a tool to allow it to be loaded onto the new site. Possession of the DPR file will be evidence of ownership of the data. If you miss this, the Archive Team is archiving DPR, so there might be a chance of getting the data over at some time later, but the detail is unresolved - one issue is how you would be able to verify it's your data. I'll post a proposal when I've thought about it.

In the meantime, you can continue emailing [email protected] if you want to offer support/help or just express an interest.

If we registered on Cameradiscussion will we need to register on dprevived or will our account/peofile be ported over?
