Sony Cybershot DPR Shutdown Discussion Thread

A sad do for all of us!

Feel guilty for not visiting more

Lots of friends made here and a few enemies, but I will miss them both!.

I will really miss Bill Borne and his posts He has been a big credit to the community
Why THank you for that, Greg
He is absolutely right Bill! Whether you acknowledge it or not you were the Go to guy for so many of us. I always felt you were in charge even though you always denied it. You stayed the course like no other on here and it is greatly appreciated by me and others on the Sony Cyber Shot forum.

Sincerely,

Mina J
Heh, you are right about all the private messages I got but I was never in charge!

Which on occasion I got told that by people!!! I don't think I got nasty, but would just have the person hidden from me

Aloha is Hello and Goodbye.

I am going to miss watching your grandson grow up. He has an infectious smile.

I am going to miss seeing your photos in the Mini-Challenges.

Aloha,

Val

Thank you Kit. One more place I have to visit!

Aloha,

Val

I chose the "Both community interactions and photos"

But saw the sentence

"Note: It may take DPReview up to 45 days to provide the requested data to you for download."

If Amazon is shutting DPReview down by April 10th that is less than 45 days!?? And they say they will delete everything so how can I be sure I'll get my data? Confused.

I was confused about that as well!

My bet is that the site will stay up as read only for a while as they work through all the requests for downloads.

Maybe the downloads involve somebody needing to bundle stuff up and make into zip files ready for download. Not much staff left to do that maybe, so a big queue to get the outputs ready.

All I requested was my feeble set of gallery shots that mostly involve things to aid help posts I have provided at times. It would be nice to have it all in together as it was sourced from a number of past and present computers over the last 20 years.

My near 40,000 posts over the years, well, that's history and lost in the mists of time as far as I'm concerned.

As all of you I was shocked by the news to close DPReview. It is a shame if that really happens. The knowledge base is tremendous. The people and their expertise is unmatched.

As my account states I've been a member since "Jan 19, 2007". 15 years of reading, pixel-peeping, question-asking, and most importantly - photo-taking, photo-sharing and photo-discussing. The Sony forum by comparison was among the top in terms of friendliness and number of activity. I'll miss you folks! Really!!!

Just in case some of you want to keep in touch here is my email: [email protected]

As some of you might recall I've been shooting on Fuji lately, but was glued to our Sony Cybershot forum because of its qualities. About half a year ago I finally returned to Sony club. I purchased new Sony RX100 VII. I love it. But I had not much time to do photo sharing. Sorry for that! Besides I was always grateful for your CC.

Here’s my final photo share (but I hope it is NOT)!!! I like the simplicity and almost 3D-like effect.

Always yours

Nick

I don't suppose they'll start preparing the downloads till after the site goes read-only. Then, as you suggest, it'll probably stay up till they're done, though whether it remains publicly accessible for very long is a question. They could cut the running costs on AWS by talking it off-line.

I've been doing some preliminary exploring of possible alternative sites to DPR. Now, I acknowledge that I'm an old f**t and therefore resistant to change, but what I have seen so far doesn't excite me. Quite a lot of intrusive advertising - I've never found the advertising at DPR to be annoying - and layouts that don't seem to be as clear and easy as DPR.

I've registered at Fredmiranda and browsed the Sony forum. Barely anything relating to Cybershots and, on occasion, a rather 'prickly' attitude towards the perceived combative comments on forums at DPR, with people saying things like - "I hope they don't move over here". I'm sure this will change when they see what nice people we are :)

I'll be interested to hear comment from other people who have been looking at alternatives to DPR or, indeed, has been regular visitors to other sites for some time.

Hi Bill,

It's hard to put my feelings into words. DPReview and the Cybershot family are special. It's not only the news, reviews and photos that I will miss but the camaraderie and friendship/fellowship here. Day after day and for many of us, year after year....reading the posts, looking at the photos as forum members open part(s) of their lives does forge a bond. I feel as though a part of me is gone. It was my pleasure to get to know you, Bill, and I'm still hoping one day you make it to California so that we can finally meet.

Randy

Thank you, Howard, for your contributions to the forum.

All the best,

Randy

Wow. Still here. Just saying that someone in New Mexico remembers you. Excellent pic of "champe," aka, "Rose Hips," or, maybe just crabapple. In any event, wonderful to hear from you. We talked about a variable, neutral density filter. Never did finish experimenting with it.

Since you reference Russia, you are my contact with the wonderful people of your country.

Stay safe, myFriend

Hi David,

It has been quite an unique experience getting to know you. I've enjoyed reading your posts, viewing your photos and hearing about your experiences. My life has been enriched as a result of this.

I will try to drop by and visit you some day.

All the best,

Randy

. . . and her Great, Great, Grandmother's 1895 Marlin 38-55 in recognition of your fine work preserving our 2d Amendment and how you kept all your discussions on a positive note.

Please bring that behemoth of a green tractor in tow. I have six acres, under cover of Rose Hips, which, if the elk don't beat me to them, I could plow them under and plant some chilis. If I play my hand appropriately (meaning, if I dig the acequia as a dues paying member) I will have lots of water with which to irrigate.

Cheers, to you and Nancy.

David

PS. The tree behind Valentina is a peach tree that yields palm-sized fruit. We bought it as root stock, but, the root died, and it returned as a peach. Isabel causes a commotion at the Farmer's Market, when she shows up with two bushels of the fruit.
Thanks, David!! I'm still hoping to get out to the SW to see you and maybe meet YOURGranddaughter and the rest of the family. Nancy and I have 11 grandkids between us, of which 6 are granddaughters. Emma, the ex-Marine is the oldest.

Here she is practicing wing shooting on clays with the Old Man as a coach:

Here with her new Brttany birddog puppy, Belle:

Do you mean THIS tractor?

Sadly, that is my Tractor Envy Of The Year Pic for 2020. It doesn't belong to me. Wish it did. :-(

Mine is quite a bit smaller..... More useful in the woods actually.

Not a tractor, but I often get to run this one:

"She thinks my tractor's sexy..." She actually does - go figger.

Just came across this thread. Thank you Randy for starting it.

I'm quite new to this forum; less than a year I guess. It has been the most rewarding, friendly and helpful forum that I have been on or visited. Will miss it and all of you dearly.

I've learned a lot about photography in general and the RX10 specifically, but not nearly enough. Not sure how to fill the upcoming void.

As an update, my health has improved quite a bit. I thank you all for your support, care and understanding. My injections are working well and no need for the bi-weekly transfusions. Thank God that the $17k annual cost is fully covered by our provincial health care.

I will miss the camaraderie the most, as I've made many friends here. Take care all, stay safe, heathy and engaged.....Don

Hello Greg,

Thank you, it has been my pleasure to get to know you. Your photos are always enjoyable and the story behind them adds so much more. I appreciate all that you brought to the Cybershot community.

Randy

Hello Don,

I'm glad to hear the treatments are helping and improving your health. You have been and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for your contributions...photos and commentary here in the Cybershot forum.

Randy

Oh, Mina,

What a joy it was for Sandy and myself to have lunch at your home and meet you and Jerry. This forum is what made all that happen. I am indeed sad DPReview and this forum will be no more.

Sandy and I have been crazy busy with so much going on...but we shall get together again. That trip to Bolsa Chica is still in the works...I will let you know when so that the date will fit your plans.

I'll be in touch soon,

Randy
