Are there many or any still using their E-P5 regularly?

I was all set up to stage an E-P5 10th birthday party on the 10th May but Jeff has pulled the plug so this site will be gone before the party.

Anyway, I still use my E-P5 pair, but not much as no trips since 2019, need to get busy with some serious holiday planning so I can get them out and about and busy again.

My wife uses mine. Still an amazing camera!

Hi Guy

My everyday camera is the EPL7

But, sometimes I take my Silver EPL5 for a ride. Still have a mint black one too.

I guess they will last many years more.

Funny, people always comment..."what a nice camera.." (silver EP5)

raising my hand... LOL!
but not as much as when it was the primary...
still a great camera, simple, enough settings to make things nice, without getting things crossways... even better since I added a VF-4 ...
I think I'll be keeping and using it, long after I move my EM5-ii's on to newer pastures...
...where do you plan to hang your hat? now that DPR will be frozen in Carbonite ?
Thx

Agree.

I failed to put the link to my E-P5 menu pages that are sort of complete but do need more work and tidy-ups....

All my pages are works in progress and I eventually get around to fixing errors and adding stuff.

For suggestions or corrections or just to talk then email me at....

Nice really understates it....

The 1/2/3/4 are the four MySets on the dial.

I bought the VF-2 but I found that in situations when I could not see the screen I also could not see the EVF due to my glasses letting in too much light, so I use screen only now always.

Only once I did find the screen impossible in E-PL5 days and I did this for a perfect screen view....

I think I'll simply withdraw from the Internet and maybe get back to trying to set up a garden railway layout. Have lots of tracks and trains to go but backyard not yet in a state to accommodate it. Using G gauge track (43mm gauge) so the models are quite big.

Yep, but haven't taken it out of storage since my latest move.

Been using a Leica C type 112 1/1.7" sensor camera. Not noticing the difference in resolution but am noticing difference in lens quality, no meaningful DOF control, etc.

Still using my EP5 most of the time, love this camera. It’s built like a tank. Paired with a VF4 and a 14-150mm lens, satisfies all my photography needs.

Guy, it’s hard to believe this is all coming to an end. (I’ve been following DPreview for over 20 years.). And here you are continuing to provide support for this community even as that end approaches—just 19 days left. I’ve always found your posts “must click” material and have learned a lot from them. In particular you introduced me to the Merklinger technique for getting everything in the frame to be in focus, and this is something I’ve found very useful. As we all say good-bye to DPreview and each other, let me wish you all the best in the years ahead and joy in setting up the model railroads in your garden.

After reading about the upcoming demise of dpreview, I made an account just to extend my personal thanks for the many insights, experiences, and helpful camera settings you've shared over the years.

I picked up a refurbished E-P5 kit with the VF-4 in 2016 and it has served me well. Just about last month, the touchscreen started becoming unresponsive. The rest of the buttons and dials work (though that back dial sometimes needs an extra click or two to get going) so I'm hanging onto it for now and thinking of sharing it with my daughter as she gets older. I picked up a used EM-1 mark II with a 12-45mm lens this month so I don't have to run for cover at the first sight of rain.

Cheers and good luck,

Eric

I still use mine frequently, Guy. A wonderful camera...

the small Lumix 20mm lens is more or less semi-permanently attached to my E-P5 - a great combination

Hi Al,

Thanks for the comment, I'm glad to hear that I have helped a few people over the years.

I still will keep on shooting, but nobody to talk to now about it. I think I will simply withdraw from the 'net for a while as there's never been a forum set like DPR, the others I've looked at just don't get me terribly interested.

Best wishes.... Guy

Used my E-P5 for a few years before the Pen-F finally did a big drop in price for a short while in Australia, had a close look and totally disliked it after the "smoothness" of the E-P5, so I stayed.

My first big 6 week holiday to Ireland/UK with my then fresh E-P5 had the front and rear dials gradually go bad to totally unresponsive. Luckily earlier I had used an E-PL1 that had no dials so I was used to button pressing to get things done, I simply reverted to E-PL1 mode of operation of the E-P5 until it had its warranty fix.

Cheers.... Guy

That sure makes a neat package.

As I am a dedicated zoomy person the camera usually has the 12-40/2.8 or the 8-18/2.8-4 on it.

If I need a small and discreet camera then I grab my Sony RX100M6.

I always make a custom wrist strap that tends to hold the camera to the hand so my grip of the right side can then be relaxed and light.

Fitted straps made of 1/2 inch cotton tape.

Showing my initial dial tops, now are simpler.

Absolutely. The most beautiful Olympus camera of all time? And supremely capable.

I agree. E-P5 receives more positive comments than any other camera, PEN-F included.

It's Guy's fault that I own an E-p5. I was torn between the e-pl7 and the E-p5. My local dealer had the E-p5 on sale for the same price as the E-pl7. Based on Guy's effusive praise for the E-p5 I bought that. I had a VF-2 carried over from my E--pl1 so I needed the EVF port. I loved the E-pl1 except at ISO 1600, where i had to shoot monochrome. The 16mp sensor fixed that, but honestly the E-p5 was overly complex for me: two dials, a switch thingy, etc. I liked the pop up flash and used it in studio to control off camera flashes. But, I think I could have done the same with the E-pl7 and the add on flash. The E-pl7 was smaller, lighter and simpler to operate, but I hated the selfie screen of the E-pl7.

I probably should have gotten that. It had a newer JPEG engine too.

I must say, I am still impressed when I put the E-p5 in the studio comparison tool. It still holds up well to newer cameras and even FF at ISO 1600 and below.

I have no idea why anybody shoots above ISO 1600.

The E-p7 could have been a great camera if they had included the EVF port.

Yeah yeah, I get blamed all the time....

For me just about always A mode so rear dial aperture and front dial exp comp, the switch thingy I set to 1 = Red button is 2xDTC (quick focus checker) and no foot videos. 2= Red buttin is now the video start/stop when I need it for those rare video clips.

Four assigned MySets on the mode dial and I simply flip between them 99% of the time with occasional extra dial twiddles, occasional dive into SCP, very rare dive into the menus. It's all so easy, in fact I made it easier to use than any compact I've owned.

Yes, the pop-up for occasional remote control of slave flashes, for an on camera flash I use the little FL-300R as it avoids the lens shadows I get from the pop-up.
I probably should have gotten that. It had a newer JPEG engine too.

It's OK when I use raw files (always) and DxO Photolab. That probably jumps the ISO usefulness up by about two stops.

Yup, a pity they ditched that accessory port. I still maintain that the "E-P7" is really the intended E-PL11 and it surely does not have the polish and features of the E-P5 or what its true successor should have.

The "E-P6" project turned out to be the over the top but not so good Pen-F, probably a costly mistake but some do really like it.
