Post anything either about Ricoh or other subject that you've always wanted to post but for some reason have not. Let's keep things civil and no religion or politics as The Man is still around...and watching.

Ok, I'll go first, please give me all of your email addresses so we can continue to discuss what we want or don't want on any upcoming GRIV.

Just kidding but since we're all going to scatter to other websites on April 11th I will miss the knowledge and expertise of those of you who have owned a GR since the beginning and have seen the progression of the model.

I will be curious to learn after yesterday's announcement, if Ricoh, and its GR Blog, will ramp things up and provide a forum for GR users. This would also allow Ricoh direct access to users' comments.

PS-I wonder what JPEG Recipe would best represent the demise of DPReview. I suppose it would be something dark.

I have had a wonderful relationship here with DP Review and the members. I have learned a lot. I have sold and bought here. Had problems solved and have solved problems for others. This is a one stop huge body of knowledge. I always tell me students to turn to DPR for questions about their cameras. I will miss you DPR and I really believe and hope there is something in the works to keep this going with AMAZON.

Well said Rick.

The only reason I bought my GRIII is because of this site. Quite frankly, when I signed up in 2006 I was mostly if not exclusively on and in the Nikon forums. I took a break somewhere along the way as I switched to other interests. I came back when I was looking for a smaller system and stumbled into the Ricoh forum.

I've really enjoyed your photos of the LA subway and your street photos. For some reason your "subjects" aren't as mad or upset as mine here in Philadelphia when photographed.

I'm sure this site will resurface at some point as it's spun off from Amazon.

Hopefully we all can still chat about photography over the next 2 1/2 weeks.

Cheers!

There's so much to tell.

I have a Ricoh thanks to this site. I have learned not to care about gear, ironically, also thanks to this site.

I find this place to be a great repository of knowledge. So many questions, hypothetical or practical, that i've had about my gear, postprocessing software, gear I considered buying, gear I never considered buying but analysed in depth because I'm an eejit academic at heart, are all in here. It's a huge loss. But there's silver linings in everything. The day all this is lost, we'll also lose countless of pointless conversations about how full frame is better - it isn't. How smaller sensors are worse - they aren't. How M4/3 is dead and one has to be daft to buy into that nowadays - it is not and they are not. How Sony is the end all - it is not. And then the other hyper-vocal fanbase from Fuji, saying it is not Sony but Fuji that is the end all, and that it sensor size does not matter, though they secretly keep hoping that Fuji would magically go full frame - it is not, it is not, and they most definitely are.

I will not miss conversations about ultimate sharpness and pixelpeeping, with armchair photographers who seek such thin depth of field that nothing is actually in focus but the macula inside the right eye of the subject, making the most boring portraits that will be forgotten by everyone after a few months.

I will not miss Ricoh conversations about the dust issue. I'm at my third GR III (Having gone III > IIIx > III) And given I just got that one, this latter one has no dust. The other two did. I never found that to be an issue. Having said that, I will miss my puzzlement whenever I see the picture of dust spots in some users' Ricohs: seemingly a sea of dust spots, more closely resembling grain than anything else given their high number and density: How did you manage to do that?!

I will not miss the repeated wishes for the GR to go bigger and include a mediocre EVF. Our beautiful GRs are perfect as they are. I say that, but I'll probably be first in line when the IV is released (I pray it will be in a long time given I just got the Diary Edition).

Most of all, I will miss forest dream.

It's been a blast, folks. It is a huge pity this is happening. I am moderately disillusioned about this but I'm sure I'll survive. I really liked the Ricoh community. I hope you all move to the GR forum. It is more or less a tabula rasa there now. We have the chance to make it what this forum has been. It's been so much nicer than the fuji one here: everyone (almost) is friendly. There's been a true sense of camaraderie.

it's not over in my opinion. Everyone's comments are spot on. There is no other site with as much valuable Photography info..Everything under one forum

Thank you for your excellent response Vittorio.

I'll try to keep my responses brief:

1) I saw FF as a grail camera. Maybe a Nikon or Leica. But after reviewing my needs and usage after all these years, the GRIII sensor is more than adequate, and to be honest, perhaps even overkill.

2) Another reason I bought the GR is because of its sharp lens. There seems to be two schools of thought with regard to photography: Those who dwell on composition/scene only, and those who require sharpness. I suppose I would like to have both but if a photo is not sharp when it should be sharp, I personally won't like it.

3) The dust issue was an problem for me and I had to send my camera to Precision to have it "undusted". I have not had the problem since to my knowledge but haven't tested it yet. I think the issue is brought up so frequently because you can't clean your own sensor and in this day and age Ricoh should have been able to do a better job sealing it somehow, especially for a $1,000 dollar camera.

4) I knew you would bring up the Forest Dreamer. Hope he chimes in at some point!

Anyway, take care and hope to see you in one of the other forums.

To be honest, I have enough monthly fees already, many of which are for services I seldom use like Zipcar. It may be worth it to many members but I'm out.

I've seen some sites where you can go from a Free to Premium member for XX$ a month and you get a couple extra perks over being a Free member, which some see as a benefit.

But yeah, I get it that Free is not a good business model.

Rick, it is my opinion that if Amazon thought this would work they would have posted something like, To continue using this website you will be required to pay a monthly fee of XX$, otherwise your current class of membership will expire.

That's a possibility. I see Amazon as a black and white company. They can only see the bottom line. I don't need another monthly fee either. But I would. What kept them afloat and pay some employees before Amazon?

I wonder how much camera business Amazon is actually doing here in the states these days. Real cameras tend to be popular in other places like Asia but it seems like everyone here is just using their cell phone. I'm also on the watch forums and the Smart Watches have really put a dent into quartz and mechanical watches. That said there are still a few relics around like me who like both cameras and so-called real watches.

Good posts. I totally agree with "Real cameras tend to be popular in other places like Asia...". I bought the new Nikon Z 26mm 2.8 pancake. On that forum someone posted a question along the lines of "if it is so good where are the reviews?". The answer is there are many printed reviews online and YouTube videos but most are in Japanese. I haven't been there in decades but one of my fondest memories is the Japanese love and respect of photography. It seems here in the U.S. there has been a big drop off. Cell phones are where most people are at. I suspect most won't back up their images so most photos will have a short shelf life. Lost phone..photos gone etc.

I too would subscribe to a reasonable pay plan.

Japan is definitely on my bucket list. Plus, I'm a big sashimi fan!

My GRIII would be a nearly perfect camera for the trip.

I went to Japan back in 2000 and just took my Ricoh GR film camera. Had a great trip with some super photos.

I figure to keep the forums so active, they need the news and reviews content. that's what attracts visitors and i suspect what makes the forums on this site successful.

I think the reviews in particular are labour-intensive.

in terms of staff they have 10 to cover editorial, news, reviews, management and technical. Let's just guess $30-40k per annum for each staff member - that's 300,000 to 400,000 per annum just to pay staff to run the site. plus other running costs. Ballpark $500,000 per annum. Maybe you could run it at half that by reducing the number and quality of news, articles and reviews. They need advertising, as I think a subscription would only cover the basics, like a forum-only site.

Only a tiny fraction of active users would pay even 1$ per month for this anyway. There's free reviews and resources online. The only thing we could hope for is for someone to buy the site and simply keep the resources running for posterity, without adding new content. I'd be content with that.

You can load the text of reviews through web archive. So it that respect the core existing content seems to be safe

I probably go thru about 10 news websites a day, all are free. I know ones that charge so I no longer click on them. With regard to photography, if I want to find out all the specs on a camera or any reviews, they are somewhere online for free. Would I pay just to be on the forums, probably not. And to be brutally honest, most people really don't care about the photos other people post. Some are better than others , but ultimately, once this site goes dark, can you name 5 photos you will miss seeing or have access to?

I won't miss the reviews. I'll miss the fora. I wouldn't pay for the fora to be alive. I'd really like all the posts that have been made so far to remain available so that when one googles an issue or question with a camera, they may be able to find the answer.

I will not miss seeing or have access to anything once DPR goes dark. I will miss the knowledge that if I have any question about any setting, i'd find the answer on DPR, or people willing to provide it to me quickly.
