Sony Cybershot DPR Shutdown Discussion Thread

Thanks Randy

I sure hope someone comes up with a replacement!!!!

I joined in 2002 and have posted over 50,000 posts

What ever happens I will miss the forum and everybody in it! :-(

This is the second bummer for me. 1st was when my wife died in 2007 from a brain tumor after 36 years of marriage! :-(
Bill, you're one of the good ones. Remember that when everything starts going belly up.

Last but not least,

Never give up! Never surrender.

Thank You very much for that, Edy

To repeat my post entitled Networking:

It might be useful for us to share our email addresses to facilitate staying in touch and hopefully announcing a new forum site.

Mine is [email protected].
This is a great idea, Randy. I’ve made some good friends here over the last six years that I’ve been a member.

I listed two threads where DPR Shutdown can be discussed.

However, I am opening this thread for the Cybershot Community to discuss the shutdown, talk about options and sadly...say some goodbyes. When this thread fills, I will open another one. However, any other thread opened about the shutdown I will lock or delete.

I am going to miss you all. I've said it before but I will say it again...this forum has some of the best photographers. I have been blessed to have seen your photos and shared in some of your life stories these past years.

Randy

It saddens me to see this site close. I’ve had fun here over the last six years, and I’ve met some awesome people. You guys have always been there during the happy times, and the bad times. I have your email, Bill. I hope to get email or Facebook for some others too.

Thank you, moderators and contributors, for helping me transition into my Sony experience in 2016, as Lightpath48. Ironically, I was just returning this week after purchasing another RX10, when the announcement hit. Good-bye to all, and thanks to our moderators, for your leadership and good will!

Howard

William Borne:

It is unfair that I address all my friends through you. Please forgive myTrespass.

You represent all that is good in DPR. Thank you for lending your ear to all of us. Thank for finding kind words for all of the pics that we posted. Thank you for your constructive criticism. Thank for your amazing polished rocks. Thank you for making the excuse that you were simply in vicinity and decided to drop in. Thank you for taking so kindly to my grandchildren who ABSOLUTELY love you. Thank you for breaking bread that myBabe placed before you.

Thank you for reignitng my faith in people who came across the big waters and settled where I could learn your language.

First, I want to thank Randy for volunteering so much of his time over the years to moderate the forum in such a gentle manner, while still maintaining the necessary decorum and focus.

Then, I want to thank the other members here – I won’t try to list them all – who have become friends and mentors to me here.

I am much saddened by this news. I’ve been a member for 19 years and have learned a lot and made quite a few acquittances here. I will miss regular contact with many of the people I’ve gotten to know here. I will miss the Mini-Challenges and the DPReview Challenges.

The problem with DPReview in general to my mind is that there is too much focus on the minutia of equipment, too much pixel peeping, too many fanboys and not enough focus on art, images and the people behind them. Through the weekly Show, Tell and Critique Thread, I’ve been able enjoy the art of photography and, most importantly, to get to know some of the folks here, which has added joy to my life. So, I want to thank Randy for allowing me to start and then continue the ST&C thread here.

One thing I’ve learned in my long life is that change is the only thing that is certain and nothing lasts forever. I certainly didn’t see this coming, but maybe in hindsight I should have. Amazon is a giant corporation that is, of course, driven strictly to produce profit for its shareholders. That’s the good and bad of capitalism. The world of photography has undergone many deep changes in recent years – the move of nearly everyone who isn’t really serious about photography toward cell phone cameras that allow even the most incompetent to produce technically decent images just by touching a button; the end of stay-at-home Covid; the terrible inflation resulting from dumping trillions of unfunded government dollars into the economy, negatively affecting the disposable income of the very people who are the potential buyers of sophisticated photographic equipment; the concomitant hammering of the stock market which exacerbates the negative financial effect; etc.

After 50 years as a Merger and Acquisitions lawyer, I’m willing to bet that Amazon did everything in its power to sell DPReview before making the decision to kill it. I’m guessing that, for the reasons cited above, it simply isn’t a marketable property, so I wouldn’t be looking for it to reappear somehow.

I’ll be looking for another good photography site, hopefully with more emphasis on art and the people behind the art. Any suggestions?

Maybe I’ll bump into some of you down the road. Until then: Sei gut! Sehn dich schpeeder! (PA Dutch for: Be good! See you later!).

'Ends' are most often transitions, change.
Sometimes not so good, sometimes an opportunity; but mostly always a bit of a challenge.
so what was here, can be somewhere else, but likely a bit different.
an opportunity to expand, not contract... to open new windows...
new trails to explore, new vistas to enjoy
I'm already heading down new paths. Hope to cross tracks with many of you, out there !

My Pal Jack and I wishing you all Happy Trails and hope to 'See' you all again!

EDIT: I'll prolly spend some time over in the SONY forum in Cameraderie.org until a Cybershot pub shows up... LOL!

Within hours of DPReview announcing its closure on Tuesday, another site dedicated to photography, PetaPixel, revealed it was offering a home to Jordan Drake and Chris Niccolls, whose YouTube channel, DPReview TV, shares camera and lens reviews, along with photography tips and other related content.

Thank you! You have all been so generous to share your tips and settings and photos and that has been a great help to me. I appreciate everyone here and hope a new location is found to continue sharing all this vast ocean of knowledge.
