Pardon my newbism, but the specs show the shutter speed max to be 30 seconds? Or is that 30 minutes? If it's 30 seconds then I don't understand how people are doing 5 minute night shots.
Please clarify.
Thanks.

This is a cool picture! I also want to do that when I get a chance, but need to purchase the remote control TC-80N3 first. Just curios, was this picture straight out of camera or have you done post process with it. Because I know 10D can do long exposure at virtually hot pix free, but 15 minutes... that's kinda long. Although, if that's the case (without any post process) then I think this camera is extrodianary with LOOOONG exposure.

Thanks!

Frank
The combination of BULB mode and a timer like the TC-80N3.

Here's one of mine... From Death Valley... about 15 minutes...

I'm sure I read somewhere on the dpreview review, that the 10D bulb setting could go up to 999 seconds. That's about 16 1/2 minutes.

Is that really the limit? Or just the limit with a preset timer, i.e. with an external shutter release, can one technically go as long as one likes (ignoring noise, battery etc)

Are there are good bulb shots that people could post here?

Or with the remote release just lock the button in place. You might be referring to some timer.

I've got the TC-80N3 and I love it. Some of the "long" exposures you see around are actually composites of many shorter 30-60 second exposures, with some dark-frame subtraction to eliminate any hot pixels that might show up.

Just to check my own 10D, I shot a few 30, 60, and 90 second exposures with the lens cap and viewfinder caps on, and was astounded at how insignificant the hot pixels really were. ALL cameras are gonna have some hot ones, but I expected them to be very noticible and offensive. Not so, they were barely noticible! Dark-frame substraction will remove ANY hot pixel artifacts, and leave you with "dark pixels" in your image in some cases, but nobody misses information that's not there. grin

You can get the same results with the less expensive RS80N3, remote switch that has a running shutter lock-down button, similiar to holding down the shutter button for the time desired.Of course you'd have to act as the "timer" with a stop watch or silent counting ,since it does'nt have a built in timer. But if you have to let the camera complete the photo then you need the self timer function.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they are not out to get you!

I think it might be 999 minutes, but anyhow, what I remember seeing on this forum is that the Blub mode is limited by the battery life. Someone here did a long exposure shot of 2 and half hour before the full battery died. I think that's long enough for any type of shot.
