March 2023 Part 1 — This Month Through Your Adapted Lens

Very nice extrem macro
This one jumps out at me. It has a sense of tranquility. It says to me, slow down, look around you, there’s beauty here if only you take a moment to look for it. Thanks.

Regards,

Alan
Thank you for your positive comment. I discovered the value of this picture not until i have seen at on the full computer screen. On the tiny on-camera screen, even with magnification, it looked 'so-so', but on a bigger screen it looked 'wow'. For me another example not to rate a picture before i have seen it in full size.

Fine crispy details when looking close. Nice shot!

Beautiful composition and tones.

Yesterday I went for a walk with just this 180mm lens with me. I made a variety of images, some animals, some artwork, and some city-details.

This is the series with the city-details. All shots at f/11.

Woe, this is really good. f11 more often

Some friends had a rough week, so we helped them recover with salt, limes, ice, and maybe a couple of other ingredients.

Regards,

Alan

On A7iii. I've read on the internet quite a number of times that people say this lens is hard to use and to get a good photo. I would say, it IS, to some extent, as the aperture ring is a little confusing and the focus ring is so thin to be mistakenly used as the aperture ring. But as a character lens, I like it quite a bit. Wide open, not so sharp and lack of contrast, but at certain situations, the photos taken from it are quite nice.

I really like the rendering of this lens, even when wide and with veiling, as well as the like in the last with very nice contrast. It's the kind of lens I like using most, not sure I'd say vintage...rather, pretty.

Thanks! These shots would not benefit from wider aperture anyway.

But to be honest, the main reason I shot mostly at f/11 is because I wasn't fully confident yet about my focusing, nor about the specific properties of the lens. This was my 1st outing with it. For now, my method is to focus wide open, stop down, shoot; I can check the stopping down with my left eye without taking the other eye from the viewfinder, and f/11 is the easiest to set like this (pre-WW2-lens so clickless aperture)

As I'm still getting used to the haptics and balance with the lens/camera-combo, I also need to learn to control motion blur. I rarely shoot over 50mm, and there's no image stabilization. So therefore I set the ss to 1/1000th. At slower speeds, I get less consistent results at 180mm, although improving.

On top of the wide open rendering, closing down to f5.6, the lens is a different one: sharp and contrasty.

Yeah, I got a hint of that in the last picture. Do you recall which aperture you used? I was that wide open?
