Nikon Z 800mm/f6.3 PF Lens Serial Number Progression

I wonder when we will start seeing 800 PF lenses appear at retailers for immediate shipping.
cameraworld in the UK had one two days ago.
I do not need this lens. I do not need this lens. I do not need this lens. Uh-oh. I better start preparing myself for some disciplined self talk. Haha
It may be a little while before this lens becomes occasional in stock, i.e. another 6 months. There could be some one off situations, e.g. someone orders from multiple stores and declines to buy the other orders after picking up the first, such that an extra one may be available briefly.

with the quite reasonable price where this should have been a 10K USD Lens, it is pretty much affordable to any and everyone whom wants one... Nikon should have slapped a 10K USD cost on it quite honestly...

Yep, we shouldn't allow the "downtrodden masses" the luxury of this wonderful lens. (full sarcasm mode)

Nikon USA still doesn't have a "Buy" button on Z 800mm lens's webpage. Nikon USA does have a "Buy" on webpage showing four super telephoto lens. At least allowing to put lens in your cart. When you go to checkout, you are told Z 800mm lens is on back order.

Despite surge in people getting Z 800mm lens, it doesn't look like Nikon has enough on hand to sell directly or to big retailers.

Adorama shows lens on back order. B&H has it as temporarily out of stock.

It seems much, much too soon in the production cycle for this lens to be readily in stock - assuming it ever is at its price point.

It also seems reasonable to presume that NPS orders have generally been satisfied and some very early none NPS orders in the queue are getting delivery.

It may be several more months before all outstanding orders are satisfied and that the lens is relatively easy to find in stock.

NikonUSA is an interesting website - if you’re persistent enough - once in a while, when you press the add to cart button, the next page actually loads a price, and allows you to continue processing the order - even though the website warns you that the lens is “this item is on backorder”. I didn’t follow thru but sure am curious to see what really happens. 😁

p.s. I just tried it again, and it loaded the price prior to “checkout”.

Thanks for the updated graph:
  • Z lens production serial numbers start from 20002001 as I mentioned in the opening post. (If there is a special edition for a lens, that may start from 3000****.)
  • Nikon seemed to have over 1K 800mm PF on hand at launch. That appears to be a fairly large number but clearly could not at all meet the very high demand.
  • Nikon is suddenly delivering a lot of 800mm PF since mid February, 2023. Again, I think (1) production may have sped up since the end of China’s Covid lock down and (2) Nikon increased PF element production in response to the early high demand, and those extra PF elements are now available after 7, 8 months.

In about 6 to 8 weeks time the situation should be a little clearer.

Thought I would give this thread a bump. Interestingly, after a flurry of reports that people are receiving their new 800mm PF lenses, it seems kind of quiet in the last couple of weeks. Has anybody received a new 800 PF in the last week or so. (Today is 16 March, 2023.)

I'm still wondering the same thing. I ordered mine about 35 minutes after they started taking orders and I received the B&H out of stock message on March 12th.

It does seem like Nikon delivered a fairly large number of the 800 PF in late February, early March and then it is quiet again. B&H may have gone through their earliest orders from the first 10 to 20 minutes on April 6, 2022. If you are indeed 35 minutes out, it may take a few more months. :-|

Too bad DPReview won't be around for long enough for us to continue tracking these 800 PF shipments. :-(

Agreed.

The last recorded number on Roland Vink's site at 17th March is 4449.

I thought I remembered reading that Nikon ships them out in monthly batches.

My local shop in Cape Town has just received 6 lenses. These are long overdue to fill outstanding orders

The highest serial No is 2000782*

This suggests annual production is at least 7000 units / year

Previously, the higher serial number we had seen was 200062** from March 3, according to the post by KonradE: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66909646

That seems to be a huge jump from 62** to 782* (April 4) in about a month. Perhaps Nikon is having another large shipment. Please keep in mind that serial numbers for production units start from 20002001, not from 1.

Bought my lens april 3rd. In Sweden. Over the counter in a local shop which had lenses in stock. No preorder. Serial no 200068xx.

Congratulations. Looks like Nikon is shipping a lot of 800 PF again this month, and the wait situation has also improved.

The last serial number recorded at potosynthesis.co.nz about the 10th March was 6449.

With other reports a number over 7000 Nikon are obviously shipping more of this lens.

Whether PF element production has been increased is something Nikon has not reported - though they may have done this.
