Why can't I set exposure compensation to the Lens Fn ring?

Hi All,

Maybe some one can help me out. I've set the exposure compensation to the front function ring of my 24-70mm f/2.8S lens (left/right turning), but it will not change to that option although it's selected in the camera control (shooting) menu of the Z9 to that ring.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Michel

See if setting "control ring" solves it. That's what I was doing wrong. The custom control diagram is wonky.

Hi Tony,

Thanks. I know what you mean about wonkyness :-) but that ring is working well (set it to aperture and working as intended) The frontal Fn ring keeps it's function as a manual zoom ring, even if I change it to an other function in the control shooting menu.

You need to have auto ISO for it to work I believe.

If the ring zooms, it's not a fn ring. Zooming is done mechanically by gears and stuff inside the lens and works even with no camera attached.

I think you meant something else than zooming, didn't you?

Yes, it's a function ring, that's what the name is (can't help it not my choice...;-) ) The ring turns left or right and you can bind specific functions to it by the menu. It's the narrower ring in front of the zoom ring.

EDIT...see now my mistake, I should have written manual focus ring...not zoom (manually focusing is the function given to that ring by the menu and I can change the function in the menu but it keeps manual focusing)

It’s just ahead of the lens mount. The front ring is called the focus ring.

Source: Nikon’s manual.

The graphic in the camera menu looks somewhat like that lens, and they show a ring that is located more forward, so that can be confusing.

The rear ring does let you set it to control exposure compensation, that’s my preference. It’s a better position for that anyway because you don’t need to alter your support grip.

Hi Tony,

Thanks!

I have used the lens for quite some time now and never paid attention to the front ring as a ring to give it a specific function...as it's mentioned in the menu..at least I thought so due to that they show a general lens image in the menu with 2 rings and functions you can bind to it..But that is not to the manual focus ring on the 24-70mm...it's clear now :-)

However would love that it was possible.

The option: f11 Switch focus/control ring roles lets you do exposure comp at the front, and manual focus will then be at the rear. So far so good.

However! The only control ring function that I have succeeded in setting just now is exposure comp. Even when I set it to “Off”. This will need some more exploration…

[EDIT] I had to go further down in the menu: “Lens Control Ring”. I was mistakenly adjusting the setting for “Lens Fn Ring”… which changed nothing on this lens, because there isn’t one on this lens.

Um, thanks for the opportunity to refine my knowledge, LOL.

I have my exposure compensation set to my back thumb dial.

This way I can change the exposure compensation super fast and easy as I am shooting from shot to shot as needed as I move.

No button to push or lens dial to change.

I dont use any of the lens turn features I find them to slow me down. My thumb can stay on the back dual ready to change the exposure compensation.
My other hand is on the zoom and holding the camera up.

Ah! Will try that one! find it more pleasant to have a function on the front ring (not manual focus).

I really like EC on the rear ring, except it’s much too easy to inadvertently change. I’ve been saying for some time that they should have an optional button+ring feature for EC, in this case press or hold the EC button and turn the ring.

I wonder if there is a significant unit-to-unit variance in the resistance of that ring. Mine works perfectly for me and I greatly appreciate it. It’s a good example of how the handling of the camera can be more agile when more hands can be brought to bear. The right hand can otherwise be overbooked sometimes.

Of course there is a significant person-to-person variance in hand size and finger length so maybe some people’s fingertips accidentally touch the ring while for others it doesn’t happen.

I wonder why they not offer much more functionality to both rings. It's possible to do.
I like the aperture control on my lens and setting the speed on my camera (thumb wheel) and exposure compensation on the lens as well by just quick turning. Counts as well for the function button, would love to be able to set on/off auto-iso to the function button on the lens.

One more quirk I found assigning these setting on a Z8, you need to have a lens with the control rings attached, if not the option isn't displayed in the settings menu.
