Mostly quiet on 2023 CP+ Nikon front

Is sigma still dragging their Quattro cameras to trade shows? Do they even still make them?
I think it's discontinued. But yes they brought it to the show...

When I look at Nikon's recent move (dropping SB-500 & halting SB-5000) or lack of movement (no progress Z 200-600mm) I get an impression of indifference by Nikon or a change in Nikon Corporate priorities.
I have two SB-500s, which are going to fund my retirement. Such a smartly designed flash! No menus to get into "slave" mode, just a simple dial.

Contrast that flash to the twenty-or-so-year-old SB-800, for which you need a graduate degree in Nikon flash-ology to master.

I started with a rechargeable flash, possibly a Blue-Light special. Later, moving to Vivitar 283 with Thyristor. From there it was Minolta 4000(?) AF flash. Which led me to making possibly fist separated underwater camera housing and underwater flash housing system coupled wirelessly through camera housing using IR LEDs and IR light detectors. No more underwater shorted-out wiring connectors. :-D

I currently have three SB-5000s and Nikon's keyfob RF transceiver.

with Z9 DNA be related to the RED lawsuit?

A jury trial is scheduled for January 2024, which leaves plenty of time for the case to be resolved by a variety of means. However, if Nikon's future Z-body plans are dependent on the compressed raw file formats released with the Z9, might Nikon be pausing development announcements of new products so the timing of introduction meshes with a date by which Nikon intends to have the suit resolved?

Nikon made a development announcement for the Z9 in May 2021 and introduced the camera in October 2021. So, if we assume a 5-6 month timetable from development announcement to introduction, and assume Nikon wants the RED lawsuit settled before it goes to trial, we might get a May or a June development announcement of one or more new Z bodies with introductions planned for late 2023 after the lawsuit has been settled.

I tried telling people the end of last summer that no chance Nikon will announce another body (Z30 isn't for stills shooters) till mid 2023 and more likely 4th quarter of 2023. Also same for 200-600.

No way Nikon is showing down the cash cow that the Z9 is. This is not a surprise
You are creating a connection between 2 events that doesn't need to exist.

Nikon could, and I believe will, announce a high end Z8 soon (announced before May) that is not targeting the same segment as the Z9, just like the D850 was not targeting the same segment as the D5/D6.

The Z8 is most probably not going to be a video centric camera so I don't think it will feature NRAW regardless of the Red lawsuit that Nikon is likely to win anyways.

The rumors point to an event in Japan in one month, that would not be the case if it were only a dev announcement.

So my guess is an April announcement with mass shipment before summer.

Move your heart and move beyond expectations.

I was there yesterday as well... :-)

I was a bit disappointed by the show as a whole I have to say. It is rare to have exciting stuff from the major brand and they confirmed low expectations, but there are usually more small vendors with interesting products. I couldn't find that many this time around although I looked pretty hard. A few printing services caught my attention, starting with metal-print.jp

Google translate link to metal-print.jp

Few years back, I had a pseudo selfie printed on aluminum via White House Custom Coloring. Results looked great on aluminum. But it was in part to pseudo selfie being taken of a multi-bar aluminum framed darkened window reflecting me. Picture was tweaked to get aluminum background to become frame aluminum bars.

Anyway, it would be interesting to see what advancement in printing on metal has been brought forth by metal-print.jp. What I could tell it was higher-resolution, than existing printing on metal?

I did that - I spent $5k on an R7 + 100-500mm last July because I figured Nikon may never bring out a high performance DX body. Time will tell if that was a good decision or not. But that's $5k that Nikon isn't getting from me. If there was a roadmap or even a credible rumor of a Z70 or Z90 coming in 2023, it would have stopped me from defecting. Then they could delay and delay like they have with the 200-600 and keep my money away from Canon for years!
Think you did the right thing. Nikon doesn't really seem interested in pro-DX and better to get what you can elsewhere. The 200-600 has almost gained mythical status now.

Modern Nikon really does not seem to let much get out rumour wise these days, either they run a tighter ship in terms of stopping leaks or I suspect they've moved away from deliberate leaks as a marketing tool.

I suspect the issue is they think that rumours like this don't help their business, they keep people more interested its true but arguebly they also keep people holding off from actually buying the products they already have out.

Nikon still want to be selling the Z7 II for example but if were getting constant leaks around the Z8 then they think they'll sell fewer of them.
Great reply I just wish everyone else had the same common sense view!

People can say what they want about being patient. But the fact is Nikons competitors have all revamped their line up with better performing bodies and offering products that Nikon doesn’t produce. In the end this is a business that they continue to lose market share by not being able to provide products people want or need. The performance of their lower models perceived or not is below in features as well performance than the competition. It’s been over a year since they started selling the Z9, An upgraded Z6III Would sell in great numbers as well would producing the 200-600. It would go a long way in stemming the flow of people switching brands. And honestly one new model should not have taken this long to develop and produce once they had the Z9 technology. People who are upset are understandably so. I wanted a Z6III or a a Z7III but lost patience and bought the Z9. Not everyone has the funds to do so, I had great reservations about the size which have subsided, I have only used my Z6II once since the Z9 arrived. But the fact is, Nikon is hurting themselves being this slow to upgrade their line up.

I think "mythical status" should be Nikon's tagline!

Unless I missed a Big 'N'Announcement for CP+ today, still mostly quiet on Nikon front. :-|

The NikonRumors comment seems to be based on multiple sources with inside information. It makes sense that Nikon would not have a major release with all the related marketing costs during January-March. Marketing costs for a new camera launch are very high - enough to be disclosed in financial results. I'd expect to see a new camera in April or May, and the 200-600 concurrent with that announcement.

Nikon is very specific about staying with planned timing for gear announcements. They plan design and production a couple of years in advance for a new model. The Z9 is the flagship product and took a year to fill the backlog. There were certainly follow on products planned - something Nikon has repeatedly stated. The nice thing is those follow on products are in the sweet spot for enthusiast and professional photographers.

Are you as happy shooting with the Z9 in low light situations as you were with the D5?

Are you as happy shooting with the Z9 in low light situations as you were with the D5?
That's easy - have you seen the images Andy has been posting? He's getting great results and some images that would be extremely difficult with a DSLR - even a D5.

The Z7ii has been out for over two years. Whoever wants one most likely hasn't gotten one, and there are plenty of used ones around. Nikon cannot expect to sell a whole lot more new Z7ii at this point. The same is true for the D850, etc.
That's a good point, but there's another side to it. In the absence of any rumors some people will give up on Nikon and go buy an R5 or A7R5, figuring that Nikon is not going to deliver the camera they want in a reasonable time.

It is not realistic for Nikon to cover all product segments for everybody. I don't know whether Nikon will introduce a Z-equivalent of the D500 or not, and if so, when. Therefore, if you want an APS-C mirrorless body for wildlife, the R7 + 100-500 is a good choice. Likewise, I have a few friends with the Canon R 800mm/f11 for < $1000. I would rather not see Nikon covering that market segment either. The problem with going down the Canon route is that there will be no third-party AF lens support in the foreseeable future.

On the flip side, the Sony A1 had been out for 2 years and the Z9 1+ year, but there is still no sign of any Canon R1 with dual CFx card slots and 8K video capability. I know a number of pros have moved over to Nikon because of long teles with built-in 1.4x TC and the 800mm PF. Those are lenses nobody else makes. For those who can take advantage (and can afford) such lenses, Nikon is the obvious leader.

As I have mentioned a couple of times, the only new Nikon body from the entire 2022 was the Z30. The Canon R5 has been out for 2.5 years and there is still no Nikon equivalent. There are clearly some key areas that Nikon needs to catch up on. It doesn't make sense to keep on waiting for something that may or may not happen.

With only a few hours of CP+ left,

c47ddefd347b45f3864bc38d38251ddf.jpg

pretty safe to call it.

Next up - the March Marketing Meetings, something on 03/25, and work going on Nikon Plaza Tokyo showroom for 03/28.
