Hi All,

I'm interested in the LC5.

Looking through the forum, It seems that people feel that this model is in need of firmware updates to make its images worthy of a 4 meg pix camera.

Does anyone know if this model has received any updates since those early reviews by Steve's Digicams et. al. (i.e. 18 months ago)?

I like the sound of the leica lens too. Are people generally happy with the images once they are printed?

In Sydney at the moment this camera sells for $699AUS or $799AUS with extra 64 Mb card. The Leica digilux 1 is twice this amount and they tell me it's roughly the same camera.

Thanks for any assistance/info with this old model

i found one lc5(black) new in the bos at brandsmart in the states. it wasnt on the floor, but buried in the warehouse....i was able to buy camera at $298.00 (their cost). even at that price, i decided to return it... the lens simply didn't work well with the electronics!!! and trust me, at that price, i really had to be bothered with the picture quality to bring it back!

...it depends totally on the light, focus, and a few other things how the photos will appear onscreen. At high magnifications, like full res onscreen where you cannot see the whole photo, you will see many imperfections, disturbing ones. However, this is deliberate, and when printed, they should look "better", or when whole image is viewed 1024 x 768 on screen it will usually look good. it was designed to imitate both the good and bad features of film. the bumpiness occurs when it would with film, in areas in shadow, or out of focus areas sometimes. it was made to imitate film and the prints supposed to have the emotional impact of film vs the clinical examination given by various critics who like sterile images. you decide what kind of effect you want. only fault i'd say is they should have made it turn off or on at will. no, the offered firmware fix is only for US cameras, and it will not correct that situation...at all. i have one, i had the fix, forget it for making the camera into a canon with the silky smooth images. it will, however, beat the look of most digitals in getting a film-like effect, moreso that photoshop will give you. IMHO.

The pro's: fast fast fast in use. lovely ergonomics, simply the best, I like it more than an SLR!. superb color. fast burst mode. huge viewing screen, good battery life, great hood to shade the screen in back, more... you will like the camera itself, but may have to decide on the images. There's a famous photographer, Bruce Dale who uses the LC5 and prints large images with it. Stick with prints, probably be a great deal. I paid 350 us for mine from outpost.com, I think, but they're gone at that price. The next one, the LC1 may be even more beautiful machine. LC5 also did good night shots.
