Nikon Z 800mm/f6.3 PF Lens Serial Number Progression

Received 200154xx Jan 9th 2023. Got the notice early January that ONE copy is on it's way to Germany from Amsterdam, and I would be next on the order list (large Nikon-only dealer in Munich). Ordered Apr 2022.
Congratulations. Looks like there were a lot of 800 PF deliveries in January. I am puzzled by the 200154** serial number, though. Previously, the higher I have seen was 200057** in late January, early February. That appears to be a huge jump by 10K.
Oh, I'm sorry. Mistyper. It's 200054**.

Serial# 311*

Ordered 06/04/2022 from Nikon UK
Received 20/05/2022

Here are a few data points to help us get an idea how many 800 PF lenses Nikon is manufacturing:
  • 6 April 2022: Nikon officially announced the 800mm PF. As far as I know and according the Roland Vink, serial numbers begin with 20002001.
  • 5 May 2022: Chambeshi received his 800 PF in South Africa with serial number 2000214* https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66800418
  • Late June 2022: A Nikon rep for California told me that if one placed an order at that point, it would take 12 to 18 months to receive the 800 PF or 400/2.8 TC.
  • 14 July 2022: Nikon USA officially stop accepting any more new orders for the 800 PF and 400/2.8 TC.
  • 5 October 2022: My friend B received his 800 PF, an NPS order from B&H on April 7 (one day after the announcement). His serial number is 200043**.
  • 23 November 2022: I received my 800 PF, ordered from B&H on April 6 within the first minute after they opened ordering, but without NPS priority. Serial 200047**.
  • 5 December 2022: My friend R received his 800 PF, serial 200049**.
  • 24 January 2023: Roland Vink's web site is showing the latest serial number is 20005287. But Roland's web site is not necessarily very up to date.
For those who are fortunate enough to have the 800/6.3 PF, it would be interesting if you could supply your serial numbers without perhaps the last two digits and the date you received it. That may help us get a better idea how many lenses Nikon is shipping. My personal estimate is 300 units a month (maybe slightly more) based on the data points I posted above.

Thanks in advance.
200044**. Ordered early on April 7, received from B&H Oct 21 or 22. NPS order.

My NPS friend ordered his mid-to-late April. He received his lens late Nov or early Dec.
ordered 4/6 received 3/6/33 s/n 200054** non ops

An 11-year wait must be a record. 😅

We have had several threads on the shortage of the 800mm PF lens. From the beginning I thought Nikon priced it way too low, at US$6500, while the F-mount 800/5.6 FL is $16300. The Z lens is much lighter and a lot more compact, at merely 1/3 stop slower. Additionally, the production of PF element is a bottleneck.

I downloaded the attached image from Nikon on April 8, 2022. Interestingly, that lens is showing the serial number 20002001, which I believe is the very first number from production. There are earlier serial numbers from pre-production models Nikon had sent to various YouTube reviewers so that those video would be ready at the official announcement on April 6, 2022.

A simple graph from data supplied from previous posts, which agrees with the above estimate.

I assume you meant 5 February 2023, which was a Sunday, not receiving your lens in the future. :-)

Congratulations. Glad to see several people are getting 200057** lenses. There can only be 100 of those.

My apologies, you are correct, and as expected, FedEx was a day late, and the driver just left the package outside my gate without a signature :-x

Glad you got the lens, in good condition I assume.

I ordered my Z 800mm f/6.3 PF lens (serial #200032**) on launch day 4/6/22 here in the US and received it on 6/16/22.
I also ordered on launch day, serial number also 2000232**, and received it on 7/14/22.

So, trying to make sense of all of this. My order went in to B&H on April 12th. Any guesses as to when it might arrive? Got a Yellowstone trip in September. Hopefully by then.

I placed an order with B&H on 5 April 2022 @ 21:20 PST and one with Amazon at 21:23 PST. Non-NPS.

I got an email from Amazon just this afternoon that my order with them was canceled due to lack of product availability.

No info from B&H at all except for a monthly email offering to connect me with a personal shopper to find an alternative, and when I called two months ago and was told that, while they can’t tell me details, that they would “definitely recommend waiting based on where I was in line.”

I’ve been on a few trips over the past months (almost year) where I wish I had had it, with several more coming soon. I certainly have all of my fingers and toes crossed, but they’re cramping quite badly at this point!

I am on the West Coast as well and ordered at 21:01 PST (00:01 Eastern) from B&H, without NPS priority, and they shipped it on November 21. Someone else ordered about 5 minutes after me and received his from B&H last week, I think.

There could be another 15, 20 orders in the 15 minutes between that order and yours. The exact number is anybody's guess. If B&H manages to ship 2, 3 non-NPS orders a month, you are probably a few months away from getting yours. And if Nikon is able to increase production shortly after the announcement, we may be seeing an increase of delivery.

In your situation, I think the best advice is to sit tight and wait a few more months. Most likely, you should be fairly close to the front of the B&H waiting queue.

While the 800 PF is a great lens to have, prior to it, I had never owned anything longer than 600mm. There are some fairly close substitutes, such as the 500mm PF and the 400/4.5 + 1.4x TC. You may have some of those lenses already. Otherwise, I think it is a good idea to add a 400/4.5 anyway, as 800mm is sometimes too long.

A few days ago, Chambeshi informed me that a recent video from Grays of Westminster mentioned this very thread about the progression of 800mm PF serial numbers, @ 15:19 into the video.

Thanks to all for your contributions here. I won't clutter this thread with a lot of individual thank yous, but sometimes I PM those who provide their serial numbers.

Everyone replying to this, I'd appreciate it if you can also let us know (1) whether your order was NPS or non-NPS, and (2) where you ordered, or at least generally whether you ordered from B&H. Not everyone is doing this... It's ok, just a request. Thanks.

I'm going to pester B&H about my order. I can think of about 10 different questions to can ask, from general to more specific. I expect they will not tell me a thing, but I'm going to pester them anyway.

Dave
