Will Sigma MC-21 let me use Tamron EF lens with the Lumix S5?

Hi all,

Quick intro... had to create a new account because I took a break from photography since I was last active on DPreview (10-20 years ago) and couldn't remember my user/pw combo.

Anyway, I've been shooting studio/product photography the last few years, and I just upgraded from the GX85 to the S5, which will be my first step out of m43 and into full frame digital.

I've been using the Lumix 12-60 (24-120 equiv) m43 lens with the GX85.

Now with the S5 inbound, before I spend $700+ on the Lumix L 24-105 F/4 macro lens, I have an older Tamron 24-125 EF-mount lens (back from when I shot Canon film cameras) that I thought about trying.

Does anyone know if the Sigma MC-21 would let me use this lens on the S5? And side question, would the Tamron be in the same ballpark, quality wise, as the Lumix L?

Thanks,
Jim

24-135? Which version?

It will probably function, but autofocus is likely to be slow or non-existent. The IQ is also likely quite inferior.

The Lumix 24-105 is a fantastic lens. Do you already have the 20-60?

This might help you with the decision, EF lensen seem to work fine but he didn't try with the tamron:

My Irix lenses function perfectly with the MC21 - but they are of course manual focus.

Technically, the MC-21 is compatible with Sigma’s Global Vision lenses (i.e. ART, Sports, Contemporary), but most modern EF lenses reportedly work.

Tamron is more likely to be a problem than Canon or Sigma, though, and some people seem to prefer the Viltrox (?) for EF lenses. In fact, I think there were reports of AF with Sigma’s own lenses being better on the Viltrox.

The advent of phase-detect L-mount cameras, fp L, S5II, S5IIx apparently benefits the MC-21 performance substantially.

I believe it's the Tamron 24-135 f/2.8, probably ~15 years old at this point.

My only Lumix lenses are m43. I've decided to just get the Lumix 24-105 (the only one I'll need for my studio work).

It didn't work with my EF Tamron 28-75/2.8. It tried to focus, camera beeped an AF confirmation but it was clearly well out of focus. Same as my other EF lenses except for the Canon STM 50/1.8.

Check where you live but close to me there's a place that rents the MC-21 for €15 a day - definitely worth a try rather than buying one and losing money if you sell it on (though I bought used and then sold it so lost virtually nothing, but used ones are fairly rare).

I think that's a smart move. Native lenses will just work, and work very well. You also get Sync IS with the 24-105. I find mine to be really great - fantastic IQ and really nothing to complain about apart from its rather high price compared to other 24-105 f4 lenses on the market.

I had the 20-60 and swapped it out for the 24-105. Much better lens, but i do miss the wide 4mm...

I have a preorder for the S5iix, again with the kit lens.

So from end may i can use the 20-60 on the S5, especially for the wide end, and use the 24-105mm on the S5iix.
