M2 Pro benchmarks relevant to PL6?

I just saw a new video comparing the M2 Pro in various computers -- all have the 512gb SSD. The M2 MBA in the chart has the slow 256gb SSD. The 512gb SSD in the M2 Pro MBPs is a lot faster than the one in the M2 Pro Mini. The M1 Mini 512gb SSD was probably about the same as this M2 Pro Mini, but I do not recall.

Also, the M2 has a smaller heat sink than the M1.

Really? They now start the same BS with the pro line? I bought in December a MBP M1 with 1TB but 512 would also have been two NANDs right?
 
Well, sort of. He picked a middling, 3rd tier CPU, and same on the GPU. If the apps I wanted ran on either, I'd take the M2 over this configuration too.

But for small $, can substantially increase the cpu core count. Apple gives a small option for 2 more cpu cores, 3 more gpu cores for $300.
After watching the video and then reading your criticisms of the video it is difficult for me to make a lot of sense of what you wrote in that context. My failing, no doubt. Would you please post cued up links to the top 4 or 5 parts of the video that you most strongly disagree with? Thank you.

Oh, I see now. You are one of those people who take the time to post and criticize articles and videos you do not even bother to read/view so that you will at least know what you are criticizing. The result is often non-sensical criticism that has little or nothing to do with the article/video. One of the banes of the internet, IMO. :-)

Your own words - it was a video comparing to a machine that hadn't even arrived at his house yet. Anyone with a triple digit IQ knows that's not worth watching. Nothing before Tuesday, when the embargo ended, was worthwhile. It was all the vague praise of people provided equipment in advance....with a very clear expectation that only good news would be given. Now, as first adopters get the HW in hand, we get some honesty. And of course a lot more fanatics. But at least it will be evidence based now.

I'll happily read articles, if you actually post one. I can read them faster than the average youruber video takes to actually get to the subject (after mandatory ads and host blathering about subscribing).

It turns out that there are 2 NANDs in his Mini. See the comment under the video and his response. Turns out that the other NAND slot is on the opposite side.

Someone posted this M2 Mini 512gb SSD speed test. I think this is a bit faster than the M1 Mini 512gb SSD. I was a bit concerned that the M2 Mini 512gb might be slower than the M2 Pro Mini 512gb, but fortunately they seem to be the same.

The test method can make quite a big difference - the size of the block of data used is also very important - the best you can do is look at the relative differences between devices and between read and write with same program and same parameters.

I get broadly similar results to the bottom graphic using a Mac Mini M1 (although it has 512GB storage) but if I use the AJA Systems program I get very different results depending on the data size used in the test.

Thanks for posting that! I don't have time to watch all these videos, so I really appreciate your selecting a meaningful screenshot.

Presumably the M2 Air with 256GB vs 512GB storage have similar performance numbers.

Perhaps also M2 Pro with 512GB vs 1TB storage, but I haven't seen evidence.

Yes, base models are now consistently slower in SSD speed. There are plenty of videos out that uncovered this for the new M2 models.

It's still fast in relative terms but unnecessary slower than it should be. Most workflows won't notice but still a bummer.

The video below compares the 16" M1 Pro 16gb/512gb to the 16" M2 Pro 16gb/512gb. The M2 Pro 512gb SSD is half the speed of the M1 Pro SSD. This is the result when a browser with a few tabs was open and Lightroom Classic running (only those 2 programs open). This resulted in some swapping on both so the M1 Pro with an SSD that was much faster beat the M2 Pro.

The highest numbers will come from tests that copy a single giant object, like a DVD image. Those are the ones that are advertised, but it often doesn't apply much to the experience of the user. SATA based SSDs did 500MB/s. NVME does 3000, 5000, 7000, and now getting over 10000MB/s. But for most of the time, the user wouldn't know the difference. But on the Mx processors where paging is done to the SSD, esp on the 8gb models, it may be substantial impact when the system is over committed.

Random 4k access is the slowest common metric. It may be less than 100MB/s on the same drive that does 5000 for sequential reads. But compared to a hard drive that can't even do 1MB/sec, it's still the main benefit of the SSD.

The numbers in the graphic you found suggest a blended average of tests.

Yes, that is true. Actually, I dislike the ubiquitous BlackMagic drive speed program. I like the AmorphousDiskMark program (on Apple Store for free) which is the same as the CrystalDiskMark program for PCs. In today's video comparing the M1 Pro 16gb/512gb to M2 Pro 16gb/512gb in my link below it was used and in addition to big sequential 1gb reads/writes it also does random 4kb reads/writes. I dislike the ubiquitous BlackMagic drive speed program. I like the AmorphousDiskMark program (on Apple Store for free) which is the same as the CrystalDiskMark program for PCs. In the video above comparing the M1 Pro 16gb/512gb to M2 Pro 16gb/512gb it was used and in addition to big sequential 1gb reads/writes it also does random 4kb reads/writes. M1 Pro on left, M2 Pro on right.

This guy has a new video. He is both a Mac and PC user (and builder). He has a $1299 M2 Pro Mac Mini 16gb/512gb on order that he says he expects to receive tomorrow. He has built a PC that cost him $1227 for the components that he will use to compare the 2 computers in a later video. Case, fan, power supply, motherboard, and these components:

In the video he runs a few benchmarks and compares the results to his existing M2, M1 Max, M1 Pro, and M1 computers.

Of course, the PC is bigger and uses more power than the M2 Pro Mac Mini. For a desktop computer that is important to some people and not important to others.

I am looking forward to his full comparison video using various programs.
