M2 Pro benchmarks relevant to PL6?

It's not paid work for me. When I come back from an event or a trip, there are few hundreds photos to process. There may be another in two weeks, or nothing for two months. M2 Mini with 24GB should be sufficient is my feeling. That's the max memory available for M2. I believe the M2 Pro goes up to 64GB, though expensive.
The M1 and M2 start at 8 GB. The M1 goes up to 16 GB.; the M2, to 24 GB.

The M1 Pro and M2 Pro start at 16 GB and go up to 32 GB.

To get to 64 GB, you need a M1 Max, M2 Max, or M1 Ultra. The M1 and M2 Max both start at 32 GB, with the M1 Max going up to 64 GB and the M2 Max going up to 96 GB. Currently the M2 Max is only in 14"/16" MBPs and Studios are still getting the M1 Max.
M2 Mini with 24GB and 512GB SSD sounds like a good balance for 1K.

I am thinking about getting an M2 Mini 24gb/512gb to replace my M1 Mini 16gb/512gb. The price in the U.S. is $1199 though, not $1000.

My son's MBP has M1 Pro chip. You may be referring to the same thing but otherwise your configuration looks similar.

I wasn't looking for M2 Max but M2 Pro based Mac Mini. My primary use will be photo editing, secondary some video editing. Besides that, music programs are not GPU intensive (I think).

Now I am wondering if I should look for a Windows PC with a better GPU.

This guy has a new video. He is both a Mac and PC user (and builder). He has a $1299 M2 Pro Mac Mini 16gb/512gb on order that he says he expects to receive tomorrow. He has built a PC that cost him $1227 for the components that he will use to compare the 2 computers in a later video. Case, fan, power supply, motherboard, and these components:
  • i5-13400F
  • RTX 3060 Ti
  • 32gb RAM
  • 1tb SSD

In the video he runs a few benchmarks and compares the results to his existing M2, M1 Max, M1 Pro, and M1 computers.

Of course, the PC is bigger and uses more power than the M2 Pro Mac Mini. For a desktop computer that is important to some people and not important to others.

I am looking forward to his full comparison video using various programs.

Well, sort of. He picked a middling, 3rd tier CPU, and same on the GPU. If the apps I wanted ran on either, I'd take the M2 over this configuration too.

But for small $, can substantially increase the cpu core count. Apple gives a small option for 2 more cpu cores, 3 more gpu cores for $300.

With the embargo over tomorrow, we'll see how much benefit it fetches, and some non Apple marketing department comparisons. My suspicion is the $300 upgrade will be decent, if for the fact that you're in the ballpark of the base Studio model which will be the better, if less compact choice.

Maybe he's saying that if you are building a desktop tower PC where electrical power consumption and cooling aren't a big issue, you'd pick a faster/hotter Intel CPU to do the performance comparison. And that a different Intel desktop CPU would give you "substantially" more CPU cores (more than 2 extra) for "small $" (less than $300?).

why would I watch a video that purports to talk about comparisons with a machine he doesn't receive until tomorrow, and when I can already read I5 (versus I7 or I9) and 3060ti?

500W seems the bottom line for the PC build, versus maybe 40W for the M2 Mini. Apple has not yet updated their support page.

It appears that the M2 pro might be a 30W TDP, but they're never that explicit about this sort of information and TDP has become a rather grey figure anyway. The topic to confirm is whether or not the mini effectively cools it without throttling, or if it requires active fans to do so. The Studio's heat sink was so massively overengineered that it would be unusual for the fans to ever kick on.

On the PC side, if one wants to consider efficiency considerations, they would go for the AMD 7000s (or 5000s for price) over the Intel 12/13s. Intel is burning electrons to eek out a tiny perf lead.

The 512gb SSD in the M2 Pro MBPs is a lot faster than the one in the M2 Pro Mini. The M1 Mini 512gb SSD was probably about the same as this M2 Pro Mini, but I do not recall.

The 512gb SSD in the M2 Pro MBPs is a lot faster than the one in the M2 Pro Mini. The M1 Mini 512gb SSD was probably about the same as this M2 Pro Mini, but I do not recall.
With the 256 GB GB SSDs on the MacBook Airs, I believe the cause was that the M1 Airs had 2x128 GB flash chips (allowing parallel operations), while the M2 Airs used a single, higher-density 256 GB flash chip.

1457 MB/s (the write speed shown here for M2 Airs with 256 SSDs works out to 11.656 Gbps. Slow by PCIe SSD standards, but much higher than what a 2.5" SATA III SSD in a USB enclosure could deliver. (At most 5 Gbps or 6 Gbps – before overhead.)

3481 MB/s = 27.848 Gbps, and 6309 MB/s = 50.472 Gbps, or higher than you could get with an external M.2 NVMe SSD in a 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3/4 enclosure. Perhaps the MBPs got SSDs that support a newer (faster) version of PCIe, and the Minis didn't?!?

Pretty sure none of this will make any perceptible difference in stills work, except possibly for scratch disk performance. If you have enough RAM, that may not even be a factor.
