Hello Sigma Shooters!

January 2023 is here! It is very cold and snowy weather is already here in Denver. Time for our weekly show and tell about images taken with a Sigma cameras and lenses. Remember the drill, you can enter up to 3 images and it would be helpful if you give you post a title so that comment will be directed properly.

Now go out and shoot some pix and have fun. Members in the northern hemisphere try to stay warm!

That's a fine house. I bet the maintenance costs are colossal.

Your views of local scenery are much appreciated.

Don
Thanks, Don. The house is privately owned and has been used in a number of films. I guess that brings in a few bob. The grounds are open to the public.

… Steve: My thought is that when Merrills look “crunchy”- especially long distance images- it is solely because it has been hand held, then post sharpened. Yet, Merrills have perfect, authentic, natural clarity when taken on a tripod. There is a clear difference.

... Of course, I am as reluctant as any to carry along a tripod. So, in a few days I have a tripod sling arriving, that will carry over the shoulder- like a quiver of arrows. Can even leave the DP2M attached in good weather. I am committed to getting the best out of this camera.

How about ...;

… Steve: Are you using a tripod and sharpening?
Hand held. Sharpening in SPP is -1.5 and I sharpen a bit in LightRoom
… I would offer to try a similar image the same way, and then one with a tripod without sharpening adjustments.
Ha! I can’t fit the tripod in my coat pocket. And I’ve gotta keep the dog in sight.
Is the image over-sharpened?
No:

My ‘sharpening’ is negative 1.50 in SPP to make the tiff file. In LightRoom I will do a little sharpening. My gauge is, if possible, to peek at the sky as I feel this gets obviously grittier compared with other parts of the photo like walls and trees.

What are your post processing sharpening or non sharpening steps?

The photo of the river was at 1/50th, so, there could well be some camera shake and a tripod would have been useful. Woodland, shade and a winter leaden English sky are not the best for Sigma cameras.

I will go back because I’d like to have another look at the many ruined water wheel granite structures. Impressive stuff. Maybe, I’ll take a tripod and order up some sunshine!

sd Quattro + Jupiter 11A 135mm @ around f6.3, developed in SPP -

135mm is tricky to manual focus handheld using the magnified view, as long FLs are really shaky (and the EVF is slow and wobbles) - but I did it. Otherwise the lens is sharp enough, though as with all my m42 lenses the sdQ produces a vertical band of green wash down one side (the right in this case). I've reduced this (fairly successfully) with a colour adjustment layer inc a gradient mask in PS, this correction layer I just copy over from shot to shot, takes no time.

Wow! Looks like an irresistible photographer's wonderland.

Great results with that camera/lens combo.

It's a bit rich, but what are ya going to do? The light was amazing.

You've given me a new appreciation of it!

It's a field out the back, which I take for granted as is usually fairly boring, flat and featureless. Weather changes everything - actually so do skies here.

Now I wished I'd explored further that day, closer into the frost, but was actually just testing that lens and was unsure if it would even be sharp enough.

I was also testing a Takumar 105mm at the same time. The Takumar's performance was soft even when stopped down a bit (and rendered a completely different colour), the Jupiter actually quite good, but both a challenge to manual focus (hand-held) with the magnified EVF view.

Now the frost has gone.

Lesson learned: when a camera is in hand, keep exploring for the next shot!
