iPhone 13 - recommendations as travel phone - trip to Macchu Picchu?

Great photos! I see you took the train instead of hiking; we made the same choice.

How did you and your wife like cuy? ;-)

That's an arm's length viewfinder. Not an eye level one, which (i) can be shielded from bright lights by the nearness of the head and also, perhaps, a hat brim; and (ii) allows the camera to be steadied by resting a hand holding it against the photographer's head.

Cyril,

While I did a couple of searches, I came up empty. I think I saw something like what you describe for stills. I really have no idea how it could work optics and all, but…

Mike, If phone camera designers can stack a lens and sensor within the less than 10mm width of a mobile phone, to capture acceptable images, I would consider it possible to stack a screen and lens to allow an EVF to fit in a similar space. Though perhaps only in the larger models.

Unfortunately, the screens of bigger phone cameras are too large for the ClearViewer accessories used on pocket sized cameras to focus without major image distortion.

iPhone and Sony RX 100 M6 are my travel go-tos. I do miss my Fuji X-T2 but I am happy about my weight loss

If it’s a trip of a lifetime, and if you might never go back, then I would carry the iPhone and a small p&s camera. Just in case iPhone is lost, stolen, or breaks.

FWIW, I am going to Spain this year. Might be my only time. It’s a vacation, not a trip for photography. So for me, iPhone and a small light camera. Just in case.

Enjoy your trip .

Some see retirement as a continuous vacation, but it still has the everyday routines and pressures that have to be dealt with.

I like to travel to see new places, so expect to take a lot of snaps to act as reminders when I'm back home. Those I took whilst travelling before the Covid lock-ins helped sustain me with the visual reminders of interesting trips.

If I manage to travel again (at my age the insurance is getting to cost more than the tickets!), I'll take a similar combination: a small camera under 250g, (with 1 /2.3", 16Mp sensor, F3.5-5.9, 25-450mm lens - and ability to merge rapid bursts to considerably extend effective zoom range) - rapidly accessible from a smallish over-shoulder bag carried at my left hip.

And, of course, the iPhone 13 Pro Max for wide angle and dim subjects, in my trouser pocket.

I have read there is an eye level electronic viewfinder attached with a small plastic clip to the phone. Power through Bluetooth. It was a Kickstarter project.

Thanks for the information. So far I have been unable to find anything except rather large attachments, or smaller ones which seem to have faded from availability, or are of very low resolution. But I'll keep hunting!

The pics turned out great OP! Just out of curiosity, did you shoot in HEIC or JPEG mode? I am heading to Spain soon and am just taking my iPhone 13 (non-Pro) with me too. Non photography trip, but glad to have a "decent" tool with my anyway.

Just a jpeg shooter. I want/need to keep my photo kit small and light. So just the Pen-F, 17mm 1.7 and one or maybe two more light lenses. Thinking one might be a F.E.

I plan to use the iPhone 14 Pro Max as a secondary camera for Pano, WA and short telephoto modes.

So far, I've only found that an Apple Watch can act as a viewfinder for an iPhone, but its resolution is not sufficient for judging the details of a shot. What I'm seeking is something in size and resolution similar to the Panasonic DMW-LVF2 viewfinder that I keep in the hot shoe of my Panasonic LX7. Although that has a direct connection to the camera through the hot shoe, it should be possible for a similar device to connect to a mobile phone wirelessly via Bluetooth, and simply clip onto the phone.

If you had plans to visit Machu Picchu in Peru any time soon, you may not get that opportunity in light of recent events.

Violent political clashes have endangered the safety of locals and tourists in Peru. As a result, officials have closed the site until further notice.

I have heard recent stories of crimes against tourists visiting Manchu Picchu and in the surrounding villages/towns. Mostly mugging and theft.
