SD9 firmware for the taking

Thats nuts. Looks like I will be upgrading to firewire. Have you shot any interesting manual lenses lately.
What does your system do??

I had a polling problem with my machine and the new FW would not
load until I unplugged my 825 printer. You might have another usb
device that is interfering like a card reader etc. Try unplugging
all you usb devices except for the camera.
so Sigma programmers still want us to use USB1
to read each of the 6MB raw files and do firmware update.
so what i finally did was to find an old notebook computer running
Win98
and start from there.
It is finally connected and
still
uploading...............uploading.............slowly..........................
Thanks Mr. M!

And a BIG thank you to Foveon and Sigma Corp!

Runs fine with MacOSX 10.3.1. Firmware sent via FireWire, took 10
seconds. 60 seconds later, the red light on the back of my SD9
turned off and PhotoPro started up again. Done! Camera reports.
Versions Digital: 2.04.1642 Release. Funny, my SN# is 1462. Time
permitting, I'll take some photos later today.

Laurence,

Thanks for the URL. The download from the site took longer than the installation into the camera. Firewire enabled me to avoid Barry Lyndon (again). Now I'm off to perform a few standard tests...

No more manual lens shots lately on SD9.
i check on the back of the PC and looks like there are four USB ports
but no firewire. I think USB2 is as fast as firewire. that's why PC user
seldom uses firewire.
question:
if you check you camera info
how are you sure you got the latest firmware?
i saw numbers like Digital 1.4.0.1302
camera 1.0.01.00D2
camfile v.0.49
is that the updated no?

Sounds like it did not complete.
1.4 is the earlier version.

that possible? I checked the FW, it is 1.4.0.1302 thats old version

Steve, sounds like you have the same trouble I did. Refreshing the

http://www.x3f.info/sd9/v2_0/english.html

page shows the new links to the Firmware. If you don't refresh, you end up at the Sigma software site and download the old (1302) software.

The new Firmware on the X3F site is a Zip file. Old one is an EXE.

No, Camera says

Digital 2.0.4.1642

I have been through it this time around! Last time it went well, this time.....Arrrrrgh....
But finally success!
My expericences.....
Try no. 1

The LED flashes and then says error. If continue and then Update again, reports as camera not connected. i.e. USB has dropped off.
Try no. 2

Turn camera off, wait, back on, try again, update appears to work but LED does not flash. Takes approx 10 mins. Reports update successful. No update.

Try no. 3. LED flashes but stops flashing half way through. Progress indicator speeds up at this point.

Next group of attempts fail at various stages with one of the three possible problems above.

It seems essential that the LED flashes during the process. This flashing can be absent for up to a minute but flashes of 1 second for up to 25 flashes indicate all is going well.

The process took 41 minutes (same time as last update). Anything less seems it has failed.

My trouble shooting involved progressinvely shutting down all other processes with MSCONFIG.EXE to remove all possible conflicts. The USB connection dropping appeared to be the main culprit. Holding the plus one way seemed to improve things. The plus seemed very floppy/loose so my last (and successfull) attempt was to use a thumbnail to tweak/crimp the plug slightly on the joined side. This tightened the plug's sloppy fit and presto, worked first time! (with tightened plug).

One other difference compared to last time is that the installer last time seemed to do a download phase and then an install phase. This time the downloader just seems to download and then report update complete.

The next step is to turn the camera off and when it is turned back on the LED stays on for some time (around 1 minute) and this seems to be the update process. I would suggest you don't unplug the powersupply before you do this (turn camera off then on) part. You probably need to unplug the USB first though.

Hope this helps someone.

..download the correct one. I am also experiancing problems with USB 2.0 connecting to the cam. Sometimes the installer says there is no camera connected. However, when it actually connects, it reports FW in my cam. is newer.

Time to get firewire? Forget about updating?

Help!

Thank you Laurence,

everything works fine. Installing over FW zakes some 40 seconds and than it works.

SD9 users can rejoice. This time it looks like it will stay.

Some tips:

Plug your camera into an outlet. Do not do an update with batteries.

Use firewire to do this update.

If you must use usb, make sure have something else to do. I should
work, but it could take up to two hours. Just plug the camera into
the wall and the computer, follow the instructions, and go watch a
long, uncut movie like Barry Lyndon.

Let us know if you notice anything better.

Steve and pollux,

It seems the problems you had are caused by some compatability issue between the computer/camera/CF card or whatever. I have firewire on a laptop and did the firmware upgrade very easily, but before that, just out of my curiocity, I tried the USB 1.1 on my desktop, and what happened was interesting: in Windows XP, SPP saw the camera but not the CF card! In Windows 98, SPP initially saw both, but after 10 sec or so, it said the camera is not connected (but the camera was indeed connected and powered by the AC adaptor!). I then tried the firmware upgrade in Windows 98 but never succeeded -- sometimes the upload started but immediately froze, sometimes it said the firmware was already up to date, otherwise it couldn't see the camera at all.

My CF card is old and slow, and I wonder if my desktop would see a different card via USB. In the past, I connected my SD9 via USB to a Windows 98 machine elsewhere, and that machine had no problem seeing the card and maintaining a stable connection. Therefore, I think you can try a different CF card and/or a different computer...

Maybe Foveon should consider doing the firmware upgrade completely in camera -- i.e., get the installer on the CF card! This would be a great relief to SD9/10 users who don't have firewire. But another upgrade via USB would be needed before this could be implemented in camera...

Or you could try Mac/USB, but since every Mac has firewire, why would anyone ever do that?

Even the PC/USB quadrant, where the problems are, is a multi-dimensional space. Last time around we heard a wide variety of stories from different Windows versions, different USB systems, etc.

I think that the camera's USB is just plain "flaky". It does seem strange, though, that a USB 2.0 system, which should be totally 1.1 compatible, would act any worse than any other.

But I don't recall anyone giving up totally on getting USB to work. Did anyone give up and go buy a firewire adapter for 1.1? or for this new one? If so, was it money well spent?

Updated the original firmware back in June and the current two days ago.
Worked first time, both times. Took less than 1 minute.

No equipment worth talking about....!!!

I just downloaded and installed the new firmware, (1642) onto my SD9, with no problems. The download on cable, to Australia, only took about 20 seconds, and the firmware installation via firewire, (Mac, OS X, 10.2.8) took about a minute, I would guess, before the red light went out, and I checked the camera menu to confirm the new version!
Now I can't wait to take some pictures.....
