Lumix S1 MKII?

I don't think it will happen. The S5II replaces the S5 and S1. The S5IIX replaces the S1H. They just need an S5R to replace the S1R.

I’m unsure if the third quarter refers to JUL-SEP or OCT-DEC for Japan (or something else).

It would be a shame to discontinue such a fantastic chassis as the S1-series possesses. I think it’s important to have big body options as FLAGSHIPS for when the compromises incurred by smaller, portable bodies are unnecessary.

Medium cameras like the S5, and smaller, more limited cameras (akin to a GX9 or… fp L), also have roles, but cannot realise the full potential.

I like the Fujifilm approach of form-factor variety, with very similar core capabilities, and more advanced features in larger, premium bodies like the X-Pro and X-H.

The GM5 was a hard sell because its miniaturisation itself was a premium feature based upon expensive engineering innovations, so that’s probably better left to the m4/3 range (then again, the Sigma fp & fp L are very powerful in certain areas, albeit without mech-shutters.)

Actually, I’d still like to see the S1 chassis used with microfourthirds — for the ultimate in thermal and stabilisation supremacy.

For now, the Sigma fp L has fallen lower on my wanted list in favour of:

⭐️ Lumix S5iiX

⭐️ 2025 Foveon Full-Frame (obviously) — P.S. and which I’d be happy to see in an S1-scale chassis or bigger version of the sd Quattro chassis.

So now we know within reason what to expect from the S5 MKII, what does this mean for the S1 upgrade do we reckon?

PDAF + DfD, 30+ MP sensor surely? and similar features with less focus on video?

And... I reckon even better IBIS?

I'd just like to see a big native telephoto for wildlife.

Something nearer 500mm I was thinking. May never happen.

I think Greg Ohio called it. The S5II and S5II X will probably replace the S1 and S1H. I think we will see new M43 cameras with PDAF in 2024. ( and probably a bunch of firmware tweaks for the S5II and S5II X later this year )

Since I mainly shoot video, I am curious to see if Panasonic adds a new Full Frame prosumer cine camera this year or next. ( in the mean time, I will definitely pick up a S5II X when it's in the stores next summer )

Now that Lumix AF is on par with Sony and that the IBIS is by far the best in the market, will Lumix launch a flagship camera to compete with the Sony A1 and the Nikon Z9?

I‘m sure we will see a S1II as a Lumix Flagship. Panasonic wants a foot in the 8k game.

The S1 body would be very well suited for more demanding video features. The bigger battery is a huge plus when power consumption goes up and the new cooling solution should be easier to install in the bigger body.

My guess is, we won‘t see any „r“ or „h“ model but a S1 with around 40mp which is suitable for 8k video and high res stills. And I hope we will see such a beautiful „x“ variant as well ;-)

This is what I would do if I were them. I don't think the S1 had enough to justify buying it over the lower-cost S5 for many people, and now with the improvements I think that's even more true. So a higher-MP, stacked sensor in a slightly bigger body would be a great flagship offering.

So would I add to or update my S1 when I would prefer an SX1 RF style body which technically would be more 'packable' than the S5 (type). Not going to rush - I can wait and be surprised by the RF style body. No point in dumping what is likely to be AUD$3,000 on one camera body only to find that the one you want arrives before the ink on the credit card has worn off.
I know you're not planning to buy, but for what it's worth Panasonic Australia has set the RRP for the S5M2 at AUD $3,199 and the RRP for the 14-28mm lens at AUD $1,499.

The USD/AUD exchange rate is not favourable at all right at the moment!

Lumix S1ii with 40MP, PDAF, 10FPS mechanical, 20FPS electronic with minimal rolling shutter, for £3,000

Then a Lumix S 200-600mm f5-6.3 with close focus capability, for £1,600

I guess is the S1II will be an high-end Modell with Stacked Sensor and 40-50 Mpix, like Z9 or A1. In 2024, may we will get a S5R, but we will not get an S1R.

I can't wait to see what they do for the new S1 MKII later on this year.

The reasons why I went with the S1 body in the first place were:

1) Superb handling and balance with full frame lenses with the larger body

2) Best in class IBIS

3) Stunning viewfinder

4) Fantastic High ISO performance and dynamic range.

The fact that they were able to improve two of these four on the S5 (IBIS and viewfinder) bodes well for the new S1 MKII release.

Would be great, but I think it would be upwards of £2400 for that lens from Panasonic leica

I think you're right, if they did it S Pro style it would be costly, although superior to most others. they could do it in regular S style, the build wouldn't be as good but it would probably be very light and still have good optical performance.

the sigma 150-600mm is very tempting. I'm just a little suspicious of the stabilisation performance with the sigmas. I've got the 100-400m, its excellent, but out at 400mm the stabiliser sometimes does odd things when recording video. I have to disable lens and use body only at 400mm video shooting. although they are regularly popping up used for around £900 so maybe I'll grab a used one.

Lumix S1ii with 40MP, with minimal rolling shutter
its impossible now

nowadays only small sensor (m4/3 panny, aps-c, komodo 6k, last arri alexa) can produce low rolling shutter (RS) or low mpix FF cameras (a7s3)

have a look, all FF 8k30 cameras (a1, r5, z9) includes extrem RS in full-width 8k FF modes. but they work pretty good in aps-c crop (in terms of RS)

its all about engine efficient to readout data, and power consumption

I'm very tempted to try one. Think I'll rent over to see how it compares to my old faithful fd canon 500mm

The S1 has already been rumored to come this summer by the same people that leaked the S5 Mk II. So, good chance an S1 is coming.
I hope so. I prefer the larger size of the S1 cameras.
I hope so too as I significantly prefer the mechanical shutter of the S1 over the S5. I've yet to hear from anyone whether the S5 II's shutter is any better dampened than the original.

This claim has been forum fodder for quite a while. Are you stating this with some actual knowledge of Panasonic's release intentions?

You are right. The smaller the sensor, the faster it gets. The GH6 has a very fast sensor. Scaled to full frame it would be a 96mp sensor. Croped to super 35 it would be 8k resolution and I would think still fast enough. That would be a nice solution for a S1HRX …

Probably no. The S1ii is already rumored for Q3, from the same source of the first S5ii rumors.

I think Panasonic will ditch the S1 line. It makes sense to streamline the body language and it saves costs for production, see Sony.
Looks like this new design with the clever fan can handle unlimited recordings without overheating and the new stabilization system matches or even beats the previously better S1's. So the two limitations of the smaller body of the S5 were eliminated.

They can make a high sensitivity / high res / fast version of this design. At the end of the day, most customers didn't react as expected for the large S1s (I know that many of you like it), and they need to focus on the big picture.
